This was the last moments of WCAE transmitting normal programming. WCAE still transmitted some college credit courses for another 6 weeks, until early-mid May. The Licence for WCAE, however, remained active. Said licence was given to a new group consisting of former WCAE board members, Northwestern Indiana Public Broadcasting. While the new group was searching for a new tower site, the people at WPWR channel 60 got hands on the CP for channel 56 for a new commercial station. Only One problem, Channel 56 couldn’t be transmitted from Chicago Proper. This was due to short spacing to channels in Milwaukee. Channel 50, however, could be transmitted from Chicago. When all was said and done, Channel 56, after FCC approval and some deal making (including the people at WPWR giving $684,000 to NIPB) would be re-allocated as a non commercial channel for Gary Indiana, while channel 50 became a commercial allocation for Chicago. The NIPB group, still with the Active WCAE License, would return to the air on channel 56 as WYIN (Your Indiana Neighbor) on November 15th 1987, with Gary being listed as the city of license.

I never thought I'd see a signoff where the staff announcer recites the Pledge of Allegiance instead of the playing of either "The Star Spangled Banner" or "America the Beautiful".

There was once a normal sign off of WCAE TV from 1982 that had a different sunset graphic with the same sign off announcement and anthem.

As a former resident of Dowagiac, Michigan, 40 years ago, I remember the white statue of Mary as part of WNDU channel 16's sign off. It was both serene.....and a bit scary...actually, not as scary as the sign offs from WXON ( now WMYD ) channel 20 when when they played the MOOG version of SSB and the logo in a ....atom-like set up, just as the flag zoomed in towards the end. However, WKBD Channel 50's sign offs were very much tamer with both the SSB and the Canadian National Anthem. Thankfully, WNDU is still an NBC affiliate, WMYD is an extension of WXYZ ABC-7....I think, and WKBD has returned as a CW affiliate after 18 months juggling between 20 and 38 ( 38 was a terrible choice to be a CW affiliate )....but when you're 15, everybody REALLY does wants to rule the world ( ring a bell? Tears for Fears Songs From the Big Chair turns 40 this year....and I had that album! )! Thanks for posting this! PS... In 1967, there was another Channel 24 in Baltimore. It was the old WMET-TV, which was owned by the long gone United Broadcasting Company, which owned the old WOOK/WFAN-TV 14 in Washington,DC. Channel 24 in Baltimore ran programming from the ABC network, when WJZ was airing other programming. It also picked up shows from Washington's Channel 14, such as "Teenarama". Both 24 and 14 went off the air in 1972.

At 1:34:58 in the sign-off for ABC San Antonio affiliate KSAT-TV, the song "America Is" sung by B.J. Thomas is not heard due to a copyright claim by Sony Music Entertainment.

We know the NBC Yakima, Washington affiliate KNDO sign-off at 1:17:12 - has a song partially heard and muted due to a copyright claim by Universal Music Group, which is "Do It to Me" by Lionel Richie from his Motown Records Release "Back to Front" originally released in 1992. And at 1:18:24 right after KNDO's sign-off announcement and their studio transmitter links and Ellensburg Translator are shown, a brief snippet of a person unplugging the carrier is shown at the end.

There were technical difficulties during Mountain Lake 57's "Saturday Night Movie" airing of "High Plains Drifter" starring Clint Eastwood. Mountain Lake 57, WCFE Plattsburgh-Burlington-Montreal-North Pole-West Lebanon is now known as Mountain Lake PBS to this day. And the sign-off immediately follows "Jack Horkheimer: Star Hustler" (now "Star Gazers")

December 1990 I was w/my Army National Guard unit training @ Ft. Rucker, AL for deployment to Saudi Arabia for Desert Shield/Desert Storm. The unit was activated the day after Thanksgiving, & arrived in Saudi Arabia on Christmas Eve. We returned to the United States in mid July 1991 w/out any casualties.
