Best Anime Piano Music, Ep. 1: Cinnabar, Houseki no Kuni OST

Here's a piano cover of Cinnabar's Theme, one of my favorite tracks from Land of the Lustrous (aka Houseki No Kuni, aka 宝石の国). Recording this one was trickier than I thought it would be because there aren't many notes, and anything that's slightly off sounds very wrong. There's also the craft of getting the voices to "sing" just right, particularly with the erhu melody in the middle: the piece ...

I love how these pieces have enchanting melodies and are super colorful without being crazy difficult to learn. I can hear hints of Debussy, Prokofiev, and maybe even Carl Vine and Lowell Liebermann…really, though, Karen Tanaka has her own style. Scriabin's left hand writing is so lovely, I think in part because he suffered various injuries that prevented him from using his right hand when he was young. I’m thinking about playing this with Chopin’s B-minor prelude, which this prelude seems to be paying homage to. How much more difficult do you think this one is (vs. Chopin’s)?

    • @MarcPlaysPiano
      @MarcPlaysPiano 4 дні тому

      Hmm...that could be a fun pair of pieces! For me right now, I'd say the Chopin might be a 3.5 out of 10 difficulty, and the Scriabin would be a 5. More advanced pianists might rate them closer, and less advanced pianists might rate them farther apart. Two main challenges with the Scriabin are (1) managing the momentum and the different voices at the climax, and (2) the right hand rising arpeggio flourishes at the end, which are a bit awkward but need to sound natural and silky smooth. Try learning those parts first--if you think you can handle those, the rest of the piece should not present too much trouble. Good luck! If you have questions as you learn the Scriabin, you are welcome to follow-up in these comments! :)

    Horowitz gets the vibratto effect the best. I dont think Liszt was referring to a violin-like vibrato which is technically impossible to do on a piano, but to a sound-like writing of the accompaniment as a bass-waves of sound (those repeated chords)

    NO WAY!! I was so excited and surprised to see this in my sub box today - I rarely see anything from Land of the Lustrous. Cinnabar's Theme is so lovely, and you captured it so beautifully here. I watched this show a few years back, and listening to you play this theme is making all of those nostalgic memories flow back to me. This theme in particular always really stood out to me. I really want a 2nd season, too 😭. Bravo, Marc! Fantastic rendition. I'll have to check out Caliko's medley!

      @MarcPlaysPiano Місяць тому

      Thanks Caliko! :D It was fun trying to get that erhu melody to feel right, particularly when it slides...I went with the variable-length-appogiatura approach. And, of course, thank you for making the medley. I hope to record more of it when I get the chance! I've been tinkering with mic stuff (time sink lol)...I got omni capsules for my rode NT5s, which made them sound much more natural than with the cardioid. They're placed near the bend of the fully open lid peeking in at the soundboard. No EQ, and full pan L/R like before. I'm liking it like this...it's far away enough that I don't feel like I need reverb, and it's close enough that things sound clear enough.

    Hello! Well played. I love this prelude very much, too. Heinrich Neuhaus did a fantastic Job with it (Uploaded here from Heinrich Neuhaus - Thema); If you compare His Interpretation with Gawrilows, you'll notice, how much Neuhaus understood in this music. (Sorry for talking about different interpretations than yours.) Your son did a decent Job, too! Best regards from Germany.

    • @MarcPlaysPiano
      @MarcPlaysPiano Місяць тому

      Thank you, I'll check out those recordings! I especially love Neuhaus, so I'm excited to hear he recorded this one. Will also be interesting to see what Gavrilov does with it (knowing him, I wonder if it will be very fast...he sometimes tends to be a speed demon, if I remember correctly). After making this recording with my son, I decided it would sound more maestoso if I slowed it down, aiming for procession speed rather than walk-in-park andante. I did some more study, changed mic positioning, and re-recorded it here: ua-cam.com/video/AiGM9dtnHrM/v-deo.htmlsi=AjBdfFr7RSeaRJSa If you have time, I'd love to hear your thoughts! So, I confess, 1st place wasn't op. 11 no. 11. It's really beautiful, but at Allegro Assai, I thought it might be a bit too hard to be included among his "easier" preludes. Of course, it could be argued that some of the other pieces on my list are harder in some ways...but I readily admit that a lot of the ranking and "easy" talk is highly subjective, and I don't want to overthink it, haha. In any case, I'm thinking about learning it and releasing it as an honorable mention, or as part of a different series. Edit: And, #1 ended up being Op. 11 No. 5 in D major: ua-cam.com/video/QUBr4ZKR7Bo/v-deo.html

    Excellent! Several months ago, I came across the Dover edition of Scriabin's Complete Preludes and Etudes in a local used bookstore. It was being offered for $3. I decided not to buy it because I didn't really know Scriabin's music and didn't want to buy such a large collection of music that I might not end up using very much. I went home and decided to listen to some Scriabin before deciding to buy it. I fortuitously came across your channel and your first recording of this very prelude which was all that I needed to hear! Whatever else might have been in that volume, I thought this prelude was worth the whole book. So I went back and was so glad that it was still there! Since that day several months ago, I've grown to love quite a few more of his preludes. So I thank you for introducing me to Scriabin and Scriabin for introducing me to you!

I think op 16 no 1 is definitely my favorite of his preludes. the melodies between the left and right hand are so satisfying and the little hints of what would become his fantasie in b minor, and dont even get me started on that resolution at the end. out of this world!
