Palmer also can’t play across the 5 lanes like a Saka. He’s limited to RM (not RW) and CAM. Palmer also is a significantly worse dribbler as he can’t even hit byline, he constantly needs to move inside and more centrally to impact games. Palmers got better ballstriking and finishing but Saka’s not far behind. Also Saka’s passing bag is close to Palmer’s too with the switches, through balls and crossing. People mock Saka’s set pieces for his assists but the truth is he has the most open play assists (despite taking 7 more corners than Palmer). Palmer’s assists are stat-padded - hattrick of assist against wolves was all Noni as was the equaliser against Bournemouth. Palmer also stunk it out for England - Trent outmatched him with more half-space impact (3 key passes)

What were the priority areas in your opinion then? Arsenal have signed Calafiori and Merino thus far but you could build an argument that neither were priority. Timber was already at the club plus Thomas Partey & Jorginho seem to be staying. With Eddie Nketiah, ESR & Vieira out the door in this window, Arsenal are lighter in attacking options

@@podcastpundits the priority areas were the upgrades to the starting 11. LB (Calafiori), midfield (Merino) and then we needed a difference maker forward, not specifically a striker. My opinion was a LW due to the emergence of Havertz at striker. Sterling is a Btec signing compared to what I wanted, but it may yet be enough to push us over the line due to what he offers. I’m sick of people saying get me a striker. What are you on about? Get you a striker to what? Sit on the bench or bench our highest paid player who’s actually turning up basically every game. No striker was available who is significantly better than what Havertz is doing for us.

Alvarez came the same season as Haaland so it was less of a big deal. Knowing Arsenal already have 2 strikers that the fan base are not ALL aligned to, adding a third unknown striker some of the fan base may feel underwhelmed. Not to say that wouldn’t be the right thing to do from the club. Whether it’s £10m or a £100m, the most important thing is to bring the right profile of a striker that suits and meets the clubs needs.

For clarity my point was about academy promotion prospects rather than younger players playing time. Can they see a path to the first team and are there other players at the club that are a testament to this?

@@JAtuona1for top 4 or 6 clubs, only 1 or 2 academy players tend to break into the squad once in a blue moon and they have to be exceptional talent to establish themselves. As in the case of Foden for City, Trent for Liverpool, Saka for Arsenal now more recently Mainoo for United and before that Ganacho (albeit he joined the United you team late). Nwaneri looks to be the next up for Arsenal which is why unfortunately ESR is being moved on for example. That allows a Nwaneri to hopefully start getting more trust minutes in the 1st team. ESR is better than just getting trust minutes so he needs to move on to get the game time he deserves. In an already young team, it’s no slight on the manager that he finds it difficult to find the opportunity to blood more academy players and show them a route to the 1st team.

@@SD-ee1qp Arteta didn't meet an already young team he made it young. So if being already young makes it harder for academy graduates then it is an even stronger suggestion for them that Arteta isn't thinking about them. Also, being one of the top teams in the league gives you more room to blood youngsters as you can afford to start one here or there or bring one on at 75 mins in many of your big wins. Arteta is just not interested.

@@les_crow Arteta made it young by trusting and using the young players that were promoted from the academy. We let go of Özil, Auba, Lacazette etc and relied on the youth throughout Arteta’s tenure so this narrative that Arteta isn’t interested in young talent is ridiculous. He’s been in the job for 5 years and look at the ages of some of our players whom have been playing since he took charge. This suggests the likes of Saka, ESR, Nelson, Nketiah etc were being played as young as 19/20 years old Not to mention Arteta has given Nwaneri & Sagoe Jr 1st team opportunities in recent seasons and there’s a pathway emerging for Lewis-Skelly & Hein also.
