I also tried for two darned days to replace my stop lamp bulb but couldn't screw that darned socket out. I couldn't get my hands through the opening. I finally had to take all the plastics covers off to reach the socket to replace the darned bulb...I can see why the Volvo dealers become wealthy, they empty our pockets in their shops. My knuckles are all bruised and skinned, and one finger is cut.

To save my life I can’t get this thing to go back in. I sold HID kits and thought I’d replaced every type of bulb there was. I’m an hour into trying to get this thing to fit back in the hole and my fingers are worn down to the nub.

No need to disconnect the speaker, let it dangle, won't hurt and you won't lose the wireing

Yeah, but did it actually go into the assembly and work? I'm ready to go to war with Sweden just to bomb the Volvo factory.

Why did you use a sepia filter? This just makes it more difficult to tell what's going on in your video.

I must have small hands - no problem at all, once I identified the propoer bulbholder. The samller bulb below it is a real bugger to twist back into place, but the larger STOP lamp was much easier. Being left-handed probably also helps if you are replacing the driver's side bulb :-)

Thanks very much! There were a lot of videos that showed you how to remove the entire light panel and I was afraid I'd have to do that. Thankfully you demonstrated that the two bulbs I needed to replace were behind the speaker. Pain in the neck to screw those bulb cassettes into the slots, and cut myself doing it, but it's done!!

Everything in the video is in the owners manual, but here are some tips. After removing the speaker, use a pair of pliers to gently remove the bulb holder if needed. Note how the bulb is placed in the holder before removing it. Make sure the bulb is actually bunt-out or you may have another problem. Use bulb grease on the bulb, and also put a little on the plastic bulb holder thread for easier re-insertion. line up the tabs on the holder with the slots in the hole. The bulb holder doesn't automatically "nest" back into place very easily. Note how he uses his right hand to replace the bulb from the top of the access hole. That helps unless you're an elf with tiny hands. I did this for the first time in 8 degree F weather and nothing broke, thank god! After 3 1/2 years with no problems the passenger-side brake lamp my 2002 v70 XC all of a sudden keeps blowing out. I replace it, it works for a few days, then goes out again. I searched this to find answers. He puts a dual filament 21/5W instead of the single 21w brake lamp. Has anyone tried this or otherwise found the root cause of bulbs blowing out?

Yes! I had this issue on an old 740 sedan that I bought from a non-Volvo used car dealer. I kept replacing bulbs myself, then kept going back to the place I bought it, then eventually took it to a Volvo used car specialist. What did he do? He drilled a little hole in the bottom of the plastic casing that shelters the bulb from the elements. The seal was gone and water was seeping in and causing shorts. Easy! Not sure this solution applies in your case.

Perfect! Thanks for doing this, I figured out how to replace the bulb on my '96 850 long bf UA-cam but the speaker assembly threw me on my '98 V70. Even showing the bulb was helpful as the Walmart weirdo machine gave a bulb # (that was $5) but a different bulb name listed with the # on the machine. That bulb was $20. The $5 bulb is the correct one. All in all, saves me a bunch of change. Thanks and keep up the good work.

After nearly two f $&#_n' hours without being able to insert the bulb assembly, I watched this video despite my already knowing how to remove the speaker screen, speaker, and the burnt out bulb. I can only conclude that the dude in the video must have the smallest $/+#&@ hands. Yet, after my bride came outside and asked if I did everything like shown in the video, I tried the video's right backhand get it the hole technique and wa f&#_(+ n' la. I was able to get the bulb assembly in the hole......maybe it was being motivated by my bride asking by if I could get it in the hole.....

How the hell did you screw the bulb holder back into the socket. Are you a person with tiny hands? I tried for 15 minutes with no luck for something that if my darn hands would just fit, would have taken 2 seconds. I'm pissed they make it so hard.

  • @JonWaite

For the brake light ...on my 2001 V70 that light doesn't come-out or go-in that way. It goes-in straight through the hole towards the bottom. The hole is needed to accomodate the handle/fin. But, pulling the speaker does allow a better view there for putting it back-in.

Thank you - a useful video. The bulb should be a single filament 21w and not a duel 21/5w; at least it is on my 2002 V70. Also, I found the insertion to be considerably more difficult than it appears in the video.

Many thanks for posting this simple, "no narration necessary" tutorial. Wisely, I searched out this video BEFORE I even started trying to replace the burned out brake light bulb. As with most things Volvo, it is simple and well thought out, but not necessarily readily intuitive...
