Awesome video!! If you are looking for ideas, I'd love to see a useful video on pore size. I's hard to find good, useful information with pictures. We all know the basic woods that are good for food prep but I'd love to be able to identify others that would work. There is also complete disagreement online about other woods that are acceptable. I'm wondering if some of the older ring porous woods would be acceptable as it seems there are larger "gaps" between the larger pores as the tree ages ( I could be very wrong here but it is what I've gathered from my research lol) I've seen some of these woods in person that appear to be "tight" but have been listed as not good for food prep. Anyway, thank you for all the information!! It is appreciated!!

We are constantly looking for ideas for videos. It’s tough when there are “some” interest in certain topics, but not enough to make a video about. At least not as much as you say with “the disagreement about acceptable woods…”. Id like to learn more about that. Is this discussion on reddit or FB? What’s the big hubbub about? Lol thanks for the comment as well.

@@kandjlumber I've seen people talk about Ash for instance, some say it's good, others say it's too porous, same with white oak. Sometimes pieces are clearly too porous but others look like they would be useful within those (and other) species. Not sure if there is enough interest but I find that there really isn't enough good information out there about when a species can be used and when it shouldn't be use for food prep for species that might be "on the fence" lol I find that many UA-camrs are just regurgitating what they have learned from the internet and not necessarily what is actually the truth. I'd love to hear the "opinions" of those that actually mill the raw wood and work with it daily! Thank you for your interest!

I ran a gang rip saw to re-saw cedar beams. I regularly hit bullets and nails and occasionally a piece of barb wire. One time I hit a horseshoe which stalled the three phase motor! It also wrecked three of the 5 blades...oops😅 11:33

My Dad and I built an all white oak fence at their home in Iowa back in 1984. My parents moved several years ago, but I drove past our old house last year in 2024 and the White Oak Fence is still standing as strong, straight, and solidly as it did in 1985! THAT'S 40 YEARS OF DURABILITY! The posts were reclaimed 6"x6" white oak from a 150 yr old barn in NE Iowa, which my Dad had torn down for the owner in 1974. He stored all the lumber for 10 years in an extra single car garage on our property. The fence boards were reclaimed from the same barn and had been used as the exterior barn siding. They were originally at least 16" wide, so my Dad planed the surfaces and ripped each of them down to 5" wide fence boards that were 1.5" thick. As you can imagine, these white oak boards were as hard as concrete, so a nail gun would not work on them. We had to pre-drill micro holes for every nail location in the boards, before we could hand drive in every single stainless steel 3.5" nail. It was a LOT of physical work, but well worth it, considering the fence is still going strong 40 years later!

Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt memory! It’s inspiring to know how your dad’s hard work created something that has lasted all these years. That’s what quality craftsmanship is all about!
