    Thank you for this great video. I'm an experienced spinner great at the long draw, and I had a lot of fun making beginner's yarn in my first attempts. My observation was that the flier wheels were not faster than the great wheel but easier to spin on especially for the novice spinner. I doubt experienced spinners switched wheels by choice. Part of why the great wheels continued to be made all the way into the early 1900s.

    I love it. I just hope I do half as well when I get mine set up to spin. I want to ask, is that a New Echota wheel? It definitely looks southern. On the MOA and wheel post, you could always wrap linen thread to help keep it from moving, but still allow you to adjust or remove it. Just a thought from listening to others more knowledgeable than myself. Thanks so much for sharing your lovely wheel and spinning.

      That sounds like a good idea. Do you use waxed thread for this or just adding the fiber does the trick? Is it tied on in some way?

  • @angryhistoryguy5657
    @angryhistoryguy5657 Рік тому

    Your spinning looks like mine did before I learned about pinching with one hand to keep the twist from travelling into the fibre while it's being drawn to the right thickness.

    Such a beautiful job on the restoration. The wood seems to glow. I'm curious what kind of oil and wax you used for the finish?

    • @itsamysticlife3500
      @itsamysticlife3500 Рік тому

      I use a we bit of Murphys Oil Soap to clean, and Howard's wax and feed on the wood.

      Please be careful, might be part of why the need for the pins. You do not want to wax and make slippery the places that require a friction fit to keep in place (age and use can pollish these spots too which may be why the pins were needed). The rest can be oild and waxed as much as you'd like.

    I suspect given the difference in workmanship (and the lack of a method to prevent rotation) that the baseboard is a replacement. I would use teflon washers (like a modern spinning wheel) rather than leather if preserving it is more important than originality.

    • @mari-at-wiredlikeme8728
      @mari-at-wiredlikeme8728 Рік тому

      The parts pinned here would have been friction fit, maybe tapped lightly with a leather mallet or the back it a hatchet with a pot holder in between if that's what was available. Sometimes these get polished with use, sometimes well meaning owners who don't use it, polish them up to preserve the wood. Many wheels are Frankensteined with parts from many wheels or parts replaced over the years too. In 1804 the accelerator was patented and this replaced the mother of all on many wheels, they could not be produced fast enough for the demand. A simple device that doubled the speed of the wheel.

    • @kentuckyundergroundmetalde4748
      @kentuckyundergroundmetalde4748 5 років тому

      @@ellenehill2196 the Ohio river is a great place to find Indian artifacts. Find a place alongside the river that is eroding the banks. Keep a sharp eye for anything that looks unnatural. If your really serious and don't mind getting down and dirty bring a spade and a sieve of some sort and wash through the sieve with river water. 3/4" hardware cloth would work well to make a sieve. Passing barges and large boats will uncover more items every day so keep checking once you find a good spot.

    • @kentuckyundergroundmetalde4748
      @kentuckyundergroundmetalde4748 6 років тому

      babyrazor probably good advise. I only just tasted it. Around here many people still use spring water as their only water source. Municipal water has only been available for 10 years or so. A pipe had been run from the cave to the house. About 1/4 mile. Some sections of the pipe are still there. Quite a few of the locals declined to use the city water. As far as I know no one is having side effects from it.

    • @babyrazor6887
      @babyrazor6887 6 років тому

      you just never know unless you have it tested, in the 50's we still got water from a natural spring. Then one day someone got the bright idea to get it tested...oops..they shut that down quicker than you could blink. The stalagmites & stalactites in caves are the result of that "mineral in solution"

    ever try a dowsing rod? I ask mine "wheres the silver" and it seems to work pretty good.My mothers house was built in the 50's on the site of the french ambassadors farm during the 1700's. "wheres the silver" worked for a childs silver spoon and 2 silver rings. he must have taken his money with him, there wasn't 1 old coin to be found.

      I think your onto a good spot there. I've been detecting since the early 70's and I wouldn't BS you about dowsing rods. Here's a true story: when I 1st got started the metal detecting store guy lent me a dowsing rod. I was going to new jersey to dowse around abandon towns. The rod he lent me looked like a car antenna on a handle. He also dowsed a map I showed him and pin pointed hot spots. well none of that worked and I was headed back to the car when I noticed that the little bead tip of the dowsing rod had fallen off..wow I was screwed..now I'd have to buy the damn thing. It could have fallen off anywhere in that beach sandy soil. So I asked the rod "wheres the tip" and son of a gun didn't I find that damn tip. The dealers map didn't produce any finds and I had the sneaking suspicion that the dealer had purposely loosened that tip to make a sale. Now years go by and first I print out a map and dowse it asking "where's the silver?" I get a general idea from that..then once there with my rod I ask again. It narrows my search area down and does produce results. now for how it works..I have no idea...it didn't work on the map for that store owner..but it has worked for me. To dowse a map I just use a needle and thread, place it at a map corner and ask..then move to another corner ask again and X marks the spot..I'm 70 now and don't have time for bull shit..I hope this works for you. oh and see if the local historical society or the county has any info on what used to be on you property...good luck.

      babyrazor we had a well put in 20 some years ago. We were the last well of the season. This company used a lady to "witch" their wells. We were the 100th well and she was 99 for 99. She couldn't make it that day and her substitute failed by 75 feet. We had to pay for that second drill. I don't know what her secret was.

    • @babyrazor6887
      @babyrazor6887 7 років тому

      I have come to think that it's just a matter of belief and faith in the process. If you don't really think that what your doing is legit it's not going to work. you know the feeling you get with a pet, like a dog "where's the ball. go get your ball. and the dog gets the ball and your all smiles and the dogs happy. thats the way I come at dowsing. I have faith that the rods going to get "the ball" Like the dealer I mentioned he just wanted to sell a dowsing rod and I don't think he really thought they worked. I was already to disbelieve in that rod too and think the whole thing was phony until I was sweating bullets because I lost the tip. Imagine trying to find something the size of a ladybug on a beach. but my disbelief made a 180 degree turn when that stupid wand found that tiny tip. So it's not so much that you have to believe it's going to work as just keeping an open mind and let the dog get its ball. tell the dog what your looking for and let the dog find it.
