Steelhead Country: preview
The Wild Steelhead Coalition, Patagonia, and award-winning filmmaker Shane Anderson have teamed up to produce a new film series called Steelhead Country. The six-episode series explores the rise and fall of angling for wild steelhead in Washington State - from the heydey of steelheading on the Puyallup River to the litany of legendary rivers that are now closed throughout Puget Sound, including the mighty Skagit. Follow along as Steelhead Country explores the past, present, and hopeful future for this iconic species.
Washington is Steelhead Country, the epicenter of the wild steelhead world. For generations, Washingtonians have been raised with a fishing rod in their hands and a love of steelhead in the hearts. This passion has proven infectious and inspired anglers from all corners of the globe to make the pilgrimage to the state’s famed waters in search of wild grey ghosts, some reaching sizes found in few other places on earth. But while the allure of Washington’s majestic wild steelhead continues to grow, regrettably the state’s steelhead stocks have suffered the opposite fate, as their numbers have plummeted to a fraction of their once great abundance.
Steelhead Country dives deep into how Washington’s mismanagement of its iconic State Fish has caused the precipitous decline of its wild steelhead populations. Moreover, Steelhead Country encourages the state to move toward a more sustainable, conservation-oriented management model for wild steelhead - a model that preserves angling opportunity while also helping restore and sustain wild runs for future generations. It’s not too late to bring them back.
Stay tuned for the full series coming in September.

Restoration of the Skagit River's Barnaby Slough
Переглядів 9 тис.8 років тому
In 2011, the Wild Steelhead Coalition teamed up with the Skagit River System Cooperative and Orvis to use drone technology to map out and survey a critical habitat restoration project on the Skagit River, which is home to Puget Sound’s largest winter steelhead run. The project is an ambitious undertaking that will transform Barnaby Slough back into a natural fish factory. Historically, this dyn...

Steelhead Summit Introduction: Rich Simms
Переглядів 3439 років тому
WSC Founder and Past President Rich Simms gives an overview of the Skagit River and its wild steelhead.
"Hatchery produced salmon and steelhead successfully established to provide harvest fisheries often have had negative impacts on wild conspecifics because management decisions and hatchery operations were unrelated to the biological needs of either the introduced or the recipient populations. Reforms, therefore, are necessary in the man- agement of fisheries that will address the biological needs of anadromous salmonid populations, and reforms are necessary in hatchery programs that will assure hatchery fish are compatible genetically and behaviorally with the recipient population. Artificially propagated salmon and steelhead populations repre- sent the evolutionary legacy and genetic constitution of the native fish from which they originated. Hatchery fish, therefore, can main- tain population sizes sufficiently large to avoid inbreeding and genetic drift, maintain and increase genetic diversity, and provide security against risk of extinction by supplementing, enhancing, and otherwise sustaining the parent population. Excess hatchery fish from the local population should not be prevented from spawning in the wild and contributing to the wild segment of the population" salmonchronicles.files.wordpress.com/2019/01/brannon-afs-hatchery-study.pdf
A big decline in chambers creek steelhead is the fact that city of Tacoma controlled algae blooms in Steilacoom lake with copper. If you don’t know copper is extremely poisonous to anadramous fish and they contribute this to a big part of the original stock decline in the 90’s.
great presentation, no need for hatcheries
best restoratio, would be to remove the dams, whose hydropower can be replaced w/ new SMR technology, about to be commercialy available
bet the salmon recovery would do much better by addressing the dam's mortality, new energy technology is on the horizon and need to be conxicdfdc as a replacement to the Skagit river project hydropower, terra power in Wyoming starts p their demonstration reactor 2028
it's exciting to watch the Skagit recover
can city light improve restoration by removing the gorge dam and producing hydropower from the other dams
Every sq mile counts. 2 miles above a culvert or small dam. X 100. Fish.
Fabulous
Long live the Steel. 🐟🖤
Correlate not necessarily causation. So many factors to consider other than riparian habitat quality. What's happening out in our oceans? International waters?

Where is part 2? I'd like to see what happened after the restoration?
Looks like a fantastic project, huge potential. I hope you will strive to give the floodplain areas permanent protection if they are not already to prevent future development.
Knowledge!
Thank you for honesty of this video.. Life can return and probably will. It takes a lot of people and commitment for this to happen . There are many things that are legal but not right , you just have to make your own decision..
Watched this video many times over the last year. Has the 6 episode series been released somewhere else? Think I'll go fish the McMillin drift this evening for coho.
Creating a larger flood plain and potentially pushing home owners out is not gonna fix the steelhead populations. Diverting the 3rd largest river in the state and expecting it to go where you want it to? If you wanna save what's left of a nearly demolished fishery, close the river to not only sport fishing, but tribal as well. Open your eyes and see the real problems
I am very excited to see this series. I like that you're featuring a contrite Bill Herzog. He's a sportfisherman, recognizing sportfishing's role in the decline of wild steelhead. So, starting with a good, balanced view (not zealotry). I'll be interested to see if any other players will recognize their role in the decline. Like management, tribal fishers, heavy industry. But whatever the case, your series is going to generate alot of conversation! And that's good.
hat's off to you guys that do the important work for all us sportsmen.& the next generations who fish steelhead
this guy sounds high as a kite
It's ok to call this thing an oxbow lake. You will want to make sure ground water is entering the river directly without warming as it passes through the oxbow. Take a closer look at the composition of the substrates between the oxbow and the river to predict critical ground water transmission rates.
If you're going to post online you've got to have better sound.
neffa3 Thanks for checking this out, neffa3. We used one remote mic attached to the podium (so as not to delay speakers with changing mics) and while all speakers stayed at the podium, Dave Pflug, seen here, was the only one to walk around, thus the inconsistency in the sound. Sorry about any inconvenience.
Wild Steelhead Coalition wireless clip-on mic... Besides the sound on this one the series was awesome I totally geeked out on it all day at work (actually took a couple of days).
neffa3 Glad to hear you enjoyed it. It was a day packed full of solid info and we're definitely glad to give it some life beyond the actual event. Thanks, Neffa3.
