Peel can be a bit full at times. Northerly, weekend not much wind, holiday stay away. Pulled in on Sunday, squeezed into a space close in, ignoring the "you're too close folks". What I thought was a tight space, fitted two more stink boats soon after. We decided to head off after eating and wouldn't you know it, the anchorage cleared out before we hauled the anchor. Sunday night exodus.

Thanks for another interesting episode. Sorry about the crab pot sabotage, and well done for kedging your way out of the anchoring predicament. I'm interested, though, how you got into that situation. Your anchor was clearly at a spot where, with 20m of rode, there was always a possibility you could swing around into the mud anyway. So why did you anchor there in the first place? Is there a lesson you could share with us about selecting a most appropriate place to drop the pick, having regard to the wind, tide hide, tidal range, and tidal flow?

The lesson is ... never stop learning! I've been a yacht owner for 36 years and had 5 different yachts and I still manage to f&$k up!!! 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️ I was totally at fault. I was too trusting of the forecast and although I had been there before, I had forgotten how hard the tide can run there. We anchored at high tide and using my sounder (fish finder) I motored slowly towards the bank (INTO the NW wind) and as soon as I saw that rise start I decided that was the spot to drop anchor, especially after noting the expected breeze for the next days (NW with never had any "easterly" component). That spot kept me out of the main channel (Garrys is quite narrow) but in deep enough water (we draw 2.1m). Remember too this was high tide and the bank wasn't visible. So then the forecast breeze never came (or rather it just died off) so we were left at the mercy of the current. There were a few other boats in there who were in the deeper areas already also limiting our options, but we found another option after reanchoring that evening. Lessons learnt : Don't be too trusting of the forecast. Take current into consideration (we have bugger all current back home) I should have investigated the depth past our anchor drop spot more before dropping anchor. Don't expect to easily dislodge a large, well-set anchor from your dinghy by hand!!! Anyway, hope that explains that predicament and thanks for watching Graham. These videos are really just my record of our trips so I can be an "armchair cruiser" in my later years. I have to include even my less admirable situations that could easily be edited out. I often find though that its those things that make that particular visit memorable... "Remember when we cocked up that ...." 😂
