For those of you who may have wondered why Amtrak trains running along the Empire Corridor are so consistently late, a huge part of the reason is because there's only one regular track between Albany and Buffalo (in the golden age of the New York Central, there were four tracks between New York City and Chicago). This track is owned by CSX, which is the region's freight carrier. CSX, and all freight carriers will shunt Amtrak trains to sidings and have them wait there, sometimes for over an hour, while the freights take priority. The ONLY way Amtrak is ever going to beat its logistics problems is if all its routes get dedicated track. But, well, we have Republicans to prevent that.

I was eating breakfast in the dining car of that same train a few years ago going about that fast trying to make up time. Couldn't keep the coffee in the cup. Even the wait staff was talking about it.
