I’ve been documenting trains since I was a kid growing up in northeast Ohio in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It was a time when railroads were consolidating, creating the large homogenous freight companies you might be familiar with today, namely CSX, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, and BNSF.
The VHS footage mostly includes Conrail at the height of their glory, the rainbow years of CSX, a little bit of early Norfolk Southern, and Burlington Northern from a trip I took to Montana. My contemporary footage is mostly of the Union Pacific along the Gila and Lordsburg subdivisions of the Sunset Route that run between Yuma and Tucson, AZ, and Tucson to El Paso, TX. But I also get out to Ohio every year to visit family, and watch trains, and travel to different parts of the U.S. to shoot trains.

Early in the era of computerized locomotives, CSX GE C40-8s start taking the railroad by storm displacing older power in this video of Willard yard on August 29, 1991. The EMD SD35s are now gone from the hump, replaced by EMD GP39-2s with slugs.

This was a real noteworthy time to visit CSX'S territory. Not only was the railroad's FUTURE 1990 scheme was being introduced but visitors in the form of 15 lease Morrison Knudsen rebuilt SD40-2'S & SD45'S lettered MPI & 56 lease Santa Fe C30-7'S from G.E. would be scene at various points due to a power shortage thus making CSX'S territory more colorful than before.
