Grab a little Inspiration in these videos you can follow the journey in building a wide bean boat. Watch the progress step-by-step through the whole fit out of a 65' x 12.5' wide beam canalboat some consider them to be in a barge. The intention is to fit out this boat to a high standard whilst making it totally off grid and cost-effective.
We do this fit out whilst we live on board And so far it's been fantastic. Waking up in a different location every couple of weeks being totally off grid thinking how we want our boat to look and our dreams to progress.
So far we have managed to live in an incredibly eco-and offgrade boat whilst continuously cruising the British countryside.
Most the time but not always this has been idyllic.

Expensive battery replacement
In this video, we replace the batteries as I believed the batteries were sitting too low voltage wise and causing to have less power than I should have. Once I had replaced the batteries and had them tested I was told that actually 98% which basically meant they're almost brand-new still. So we really didn't need to replace the batteries after all just needed a good charge.
We have now got eight batteries on board with the eight other batteries ready to go in at some point, hopefully towards the beginning of the winter. We have fitted six more solar panels on the roof. so when we have connected the batteries and the new solar to the existing set up, we will have an immense amount of power on our boat.
Two items that we can definitely recommend for anybody that is looking to either maintain their batteries or replace.
One the battery store in Market this is a nationwide company so I'm sure they'll be one in your area or close by here's a link.
batterystore.co.uk/
And if you need a great battery tester to see the health of your batteries, this is one that I did a bit of research on and found to be fantastic. And very easy to use.

canal boat kitchen fit out

All the way through whilst we have been fit out this widebeam canal boat we have attempted to save money as much as possible but at the same time make it look amazing. In this video we show what we did to make the stairs look great and finish off the kitchen. We used Lino flooring which is not what would be recommended, but I think you'll agree. It turns out very well. We also replace the backs...

I'm find all your videos about boating very helpful. Did you find Collingwood to be a good company to buy from?
@@river4495first of all, thank you very much. Really appreciate the support. I think I got a really great boat at the end of it but dealing with Collingwood was very stressful. They tried to put the price up after drawing up the contract a few times And they also kept giving me false completion dates which went on for months and months. I was also told I was going to have a handover and trials day when the boat was handed over but this didn't happen. They delivered the boat in the winter around half 7:30 at night with no lockable doors and no manuals. Nothing just the delivery driver. It was put in the water and I was left to it. I did contact Collingwood on a couple of occasions to ask for one the manual and also had some issues with the alternator but they told me it was nothing to do with them deal with the engine suppliers direct. But that all being said, I do believe I've got a great product at the end of it even with all of the stress that it came with
Hi Ya, love your channel. I’ve got a question about a wide beam, is there anyway we could speak?
@@firststep2880 yes of course. I believe my Instagram is connected. If you message me privately on there, I'd be quite happy to give you a call
Park closer or longer hose 😂
Poor fella , having to walk 50 ft with a jerrycan . What a fairy😂
@@jimmyfaulkner5746 it's a thousand l. I had to move the last time I did it. Luckily this time it was only 200 l but still 200 l
@Inspiration2022 you had to carry a jerry can back and forth 10 times your not a hero
@jimmyfaulkner5746 thanks for the watch.
@@Inspiration2022 God bless mate
🥴 couldn't you park a bit closer
He's got a gut and man boob's , the 50ft walk will do him good
What's the price difference. Also what do you do with the barrel when empty?
@@MrLaughinggrass I buy a thousand l at a time. You can find these suppliers dotted all over the UK supplying kerosene, red diesel and ordinary diesel depending what your purpose is. For your heating, if you're rigged up in the way I am, you can actually buy red, diesel or kerosene. And it's about half the price of the diesel you will buy from any marina or even at the pump. I use the barrel to transport the diesel to and from where I store it. My boat takes about a thousand l at a time so the savings are quite dramatic. Hope this helps
@@Inspiration2022 Thanks that's very interesting, I sold my live aboard canal boat to my mate when I got married (he was getting divorced, circle of life!). I always wondered if this might be one way of doing it although I think our tank was 500 or so litres and we didn't have anywhere to store it. We only filled up about once a year. Another idea I had was to buy a tonne of smokeless fuel and have it delivered to the canal side. I would need to find at least another boat to share the tonne with me though as I wouldn't want 40 bags of coal all over my boat. 20 we could cope with.
Hose and 12v pump 🎉
That's what I thought 👍✌️
As a non boater, why get it yourself? Is it red diesel or just cheaper than at the marinas?
@@charlesbennet9233 it's a lot cheaper if you just get it yourself rather than at the marinas and if you buy it in bulk directly from a diesel supplier, you get it even cheaper than at the garages.
It obvious they are first timers.
Youre living my dream mate got to take the good with the bad😂💯

Check the wiring & the Inverter/MPPT settings. 95%+ of all battery issues is down to 3 things. 1, Wrong Capacity settings in the inverter/chargers. 2, Excessive DoD - more than 50% is not advisable. 160Ah Battery - 80Ah usable capacity. 3. Wiring Wiring Wiring, obviously you are 12v bank so all parallel but ensure all batteries have EXACTLY the same length of cable to each terminal. 12v is so low voltage that current is high, small differences in cabling = massive differences in current. Especially at peak usage. Gg
Wow!
Get some grease in that tiller man 😅
@@Dev0ps572 I know it's so annoying
@Inspiration2022 mine does the same, it's a collingwood thing 😅
@@Dev0ps572 I've been googling today to see how I can stop it. I think I have a solution by taking the top gland off and greasing it up but I've never done it before so hopefully this will work but it drives me insane
@Inspiration2022 silicone spray all around the top where the tiller meets the hub and keep working it in, solved it for me within a couple days
Surely, surely, we can’t have everyone’s wee going into the canal?? I don’t think I’m seeing this as a solution… would be great if CRT allowed us to empty into the canal but there’s a reason they don’t and it is stated clearly that urine must never be emptied in the canal or near the towpath 🤷♀️
@@helenogrady4932 that's a very interesting view. Could you possibly point me in the direction of where you get your information from? Maybe a link or something?. It's just I understand the situation to be completely the opposite as there is so many properties have tanks and the urine is actually separated then goes directly into streams and canals and rivers. I'm not suggesting for one second that sewage is pumped into the canals or rivers, even though I believe that you're actually allowed to pump out sewage in any flowing waters. And I have actually seen this from other boats on the rivers often.
the battery bank, shows the viewers the deck 😆😆
Yes I know. Unfortunately I was pointing the camera in the wrong direction. Didn't realise until after
Amazing boat, keep up the good work and I can't wait to see the finished article.
@@Mark-bp5zo Thank you very much
Time to move on. Lithium
@@Bilskirnir030 I think we're so close to better technology though I waste the money now.
Very good
It's the engine compartment insulated? Cold kills batteries as I'm sure you're aware. Maybe kingspan or Rockwool in jackets would help keep the engine and the battery bank warm. This would give you more power and protect the batteries. My Peugeot boxer battery hated the winter because the battery box effectively hung below the cabin floor. My newer transit has the battery In the cab under the drivers seat. Much happier. Just a thought Dan. Keep up the great work. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
@@barriebriggs1802 thanks mate. Yes I do have some insulation and they're separated from the outer walls of the boat with ply but it wouldn't hurt. Put in more insulation around this winter I think.
Ouch, that's doing it tough. I know this is way too late to be useful to you but maybe somebody else will be doing a similar task. A length of wood, a bolt through each end, a length of Nichrome wire stretched tight between the bolts. Hook a battery up to the bolts, the current passes through the nichrome wire. The wire heats up and you hold the stick parallel to the wall and slide it down. The hot wire quickly melts through the foam. Leaving you with a flat foam surface that is level with the surface of the timber frame. For a battery, I would say just about any type would do. Just be careful not to completely discharge a lithium-ion. Or you could use a power block instead of the battery and so the current would be limited by the power blocks maximum current capacity. For a one off job like this, nothing fancy is needed, a stick, two bolts some Nichrome wire and a power source. To get the wire you can either buy a length off of Amazon or you can salvage the wire from an old electric heater or hair dryer. Just test it on a scrap piece of foam first so you can get a suitable temperature. But it isn't critical, if it is a bit hot then just move it quicker, if it is a bit cooler then it will just cut slower. You can also control the temperature by having the Nichrome wire being longer than needed and using an alligator clip to attach the battery to it. This would allow some temperature control, the longer the length of Nichrome wire the current has to go through the lower the wire temperature. Oh, remember to have good ventilation or a suitable respirator mask. There can be some smoke/gas given off by the foam as it is cut.
Nice one mate 😂😂😂😂😂😂❤
Get Lizzo on board, will go under no problem then👍
Just let the tyres down, it will fit through then😂
It looked like (maybe not) one of your hose clamps was rubbing on a corrugated pipe when your gulper pump was running. Careful it doesn't rub a hole in the pipe. Perhaps a rubber pad between the two would help.

People don't like wide beam cos they are jealous, like you owning a normal house and the grassy land next to you gets sold and someone built a 6 bed House on it with 4 bathroom.. and 3 door garage and looks stunning... Most people will hate.... Just like most people hate luxury cars and ding and scrape them.. because how dear they have something nicer then you... Im sorry i shouldn't say most people but quit a few people sadly
@@Chappers.Gaming I love wide beams. Especially on the Broads. I take issue with WBs taking up space that makes it dangerous and/or impossible for narrows to navigate around them, especially if they moor up on a bend or a narrow canal. I have travelled in both, and prefer a wide beam, but there are issues with navigation in some places. We all just need to be mindful of each other.
@@LexKaiNix I completely understand, however it's not the wide beam boats fault that would be due to the inconsiderate person who is operating it, chances are if the same person had a narrow boat they would still park like a complete C***.... But yeah people just assume that all canals are for narrow boats when in fact wide canals was made for the wide beam like the GU for example, yet some narrow boat operators will disagree and be like it's all for them and they should be only on Rivers...
You dont need to keep seishing the ti.ler too and Fro!
@@ladygardener100do you have any experience with a wide beam?
Best thing is to push the boat from the towpath, often one end will be floating and you can swivel it.
@@ladygardener100 I wonder? Do you have any experience with big crafts? This is quite a large vessel and when operating single-handedly it would be quite irresponsible to be off the vessel pushing the boat out when you can control it completely from the stern.
What I don't understand is why canal boat engines are so expensive yet extremely antiquated?
Lovely video, beautifully produced, 40 years ago my Dad hired a longboat for 5 of us out of Leighton Buzzard and we spent two glorious summer weeks on the canals. Loved the experience, even if on the last day I jumped up to grab the rail on a lock with the lock key in my hand but instead of grabbing the rail I punched it and broke two fingers, a common mistake I imagine. I only wish they had canals in central Italy where I've lived for the last 30 years, I just can't bear British winters, being cold and having to deal with ice as a part of everyday life. One day I'll make a return trip, and in the meantime I'll watch and relax with your videos.
@@richardspencer7122 What's a lovely message Thank you very much. I have spent a lot of time in Italy myself when I was younger and absolutely adore the place. Italy is definitely somewhere I could live
Is the oil light actually the oil pressure rather than level Dan? At low revs it may be that it's lost viscosity when it's up to temperature but not pumping the oil fast enough to hold the required pressure for the engine or at least the low pressure limit warning switch. Maybe check the oil is the correct product for this time of year, filters clean and may bI suggest fitting an oil pressure gauge so you get to read the pressure rather than just a warning switch. How this helps fella. Jmo. 🤜🏼🤛🏼

@@ianearl3407 lots of people will tell you lots of different things, but from my understanding just say you're not occupying the same mooring spots. However. When people are checking from the canal and River trust. It needs to be quite obvious you're not in the same spot. I would suggest going half a mile or so and bear in mind you need to travel at least 24 mi in a year in one direction. Going backwards and forwards will not be good enough. Hope this helps
Hello, what canal’s do you prefer to travel on your wide beam? Do you have a winter mooring or marina?
@@lynneandmalcolmwiddison9553 hi, as I I work local to Leicester I have to stay within the area otherwise it can be quite a Trek to and from work. I mainly stay on the grand Union canal Leicester line. I continuously cruise so cruise from the Trent and mersey all the way to foxton locks. And no I don't have any winter mooring or permanent mooring. I continuously cruise all year round. With this being such a big boat we have plenty of room for solar panels and this gives us enough power almost all of the year. That was just with six panels on last year and since we have fitted another six not powered up yet but planning to power them up towards the winter this year so I'm hoping we will have more than enough power. What is your situation?
We live in San Diego at the moment ( both originally from UK). Owned and operated a 25m Dutch barge in France as a bed and breakfast back in 2010. Love the canal life and countryside. So just looking at wide beams as a possible partial live aboard if we return to UK. Will be in London October for a few days staying near the Kennett and Avon. Hope to see a few there. 👍
Great video. Quick question, what kWh are you solar panels. Cheers.
@@STOBO-ON I have 4 KW in total on the roof but at the moment through the summer I'm only running 2 as I don't need all of that power yet but I will do free the winter.
@@Inspiration2022 cheers.
Hello, interesting, thanks. My wife and I are 'serious' touring caravanners (i.e. we have a bricks and mortar home) and our caravan is used for holidays and touring. Earlier this year we towed it from the Scottish Highlands down to Morocco and back (5,700 miles). So, £47,000 plus what else you have spent on your boat may sound a lot, but a hefty 4x4 to tow our caravan (£40.000 +) plus a twin axle caravan (£35.000 +) at a total of £75.000 and your costs look quite reasonable!
@@caravantravelsthat sounds amazing! I have done quite a lot of touring in caravans in the past and living on a boat feels very similar. And I agree, I think I have a complete an auto bargain. Also an incredibly cheap way of living. I also live in Bulgaria and hoping to do quite a bit of touring around the surrounding countries more than likely in a camper van.
I think you get disrespected because they are jealous of your boat. Or they're just some people that think they have more rights than you. I say the heck with them. I am glad the narrow boat that passes by you got the Karma he deserves.
