John Gould Fletcher - Goblins And Pagodas: Scarlet Symphony
GOBLINS AND PAGODAS.....
The first part of this book, "Ghosts of an Old House," evoke, out of the furniture and surroundings of a certain old house, emotions and childish terror which the poet had concerning them. In the "Symphonies," which form the second part of this volume, the poet narrates certain important phases of the emotional and intellectual development-in short, the life-of an artist.
AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY.....
John Gould Fletcher (January 3, 1886 - May 10, 1950) was an Imagist poet (the first Southern poet to win the Pulitzer Prize), author and authority on modern painting. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas to a socially prominent family. After attending Phillips Academy, Andover Fletcher went on to Harvard University from 1903 to 1907, when he dropped out shortly after his father's death.
Fletcher lived in England for a large portion of his life. While in Europe he associated with Amy Lowell, Ezra Pound, and other Imagist poets; he was one of the six Imagists who adopted the name and stuck to it until their aims were achieved. Fletcher resumed a liaison with Florence Emily “Daisy” Arbuthnot (née Goold) at her house in Kent. She had been married to Malcolm Arbuthnot and Fletcher's adultery with her was the grounds for the divorce. The couple married on July 5, 1916. The marriage produced no children, but Arbuthnot’s son and daughter from her previous marriage lived with the couple, who later divorced.
On January 18, 1936, Fletcher married a noted author of children's books, Charlie May Simon. The two of them built "Johnswood", a residence on the bluffs of the Arkansas River outside Little Rock. They traveled frequently to New York for the intellectual stimulation, and to the American Southwest for the climate, after Fletcher developed chronic arthritis. Fletcher suffered from depression, and on May 20, 1950, committed suicide by drowning himself in a pond near his home in Little Rock, Arkansas. Fletcher is buried at historic Mount Holly Cemetery in Little Rock. A branch of the Central Arkansas Library System is named in his honor.
Fletcher's early works include Irradiations: Sand and Spray (1915), and Goblins and Pagodas (1916). Amy Lowell said of him, "No one is more absolute master of the rhythm of verse libre". Fletcher invented the term 'polyphonic prose' to describe some poetic experiments of Amy Lowell, a form he experimented with in Goblins & Pagodas. In later poetic works Fletcher returned to more traditional forms. These include The Black Rock (1928), Selected Poems (1938), for which he won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1939, "South Star" published by Macmillan (1941), and The Burning Mountain (1946). Fletcher later moved back to Arkansas to reconnect with his roots.
The subject of his works turned increasingly towards Southern issues and traditionalism. In the late 1920s and 1930s Fletcher was active with a group of Southern writers and poets known as the Southern Agrarians. This group published the classic Agrarian manifesto I'll Take My Stand, a collection of essays rejecting Modernity and Industrialism. In 1937 he wrote his autobiography, Life is My Song, and in 1947 he published Arkansas, a history of his home state.

U histeria patient,?
Wesley was midway between Calvin and Arminius believing as he did in Prevenient Grace as necessary to salvation ... he would have had no truc with the Altar call of modern evangelicalism.
What Wesley is saying is true, but he is just repeating the same thing truth over and over in a different way. This is prosperity Gospel. " I will prosper physically because of what God did for ME through Jesus". The message is the salvation of man but more importantly coronation of the King of Glory, the King of the Universe and creation.
bla bla bla
Everyone should such an adventure !
Why do I like this?
Bad. Reading.
Hehe.. The whole world turned upside down ... We having it now! And is not a good one!
" the hotel room is a bit grand - it has a bathroom !" How our requirements have changed since 1938 !
Why did Simon hit Charlie and end their friendship??
Excellent! It would take a very special man to live with Getrude😏
I thought Charles Dickens was the greatest . Of course, 1:46 S. M is great❤
Terrible background buzzing and whirring. So disappointing.
Not great audio - but I’m glad I persevered!
One of his best in terms of culture clashings, and the understanding of different lives., the 'haves' and 'have nots' ! So much difference in the sensibilities even within western nations. Absolutely brilliant, enjoyed it very much!
This instantly made me think of The Talented Mr Ripley
P.G brilliance, I ❤ Blandings!
😅
Very salutary tale for our days even though written so long ago
Good play but the woman's voice was to much
he kind of sounds like an older Timothee Chalamet.
Blandings Castle

Wow, what a fascinating video on Voltairine de Cleyre's philosophy of selfishness and metaphysical ethics! As someone who is familiar with her works, I must say this is a fantastic introduction to her ideas. I appreciate how the video captures her important contributions as an anarchist writer and feminist. It's great to see her being recognized for her prolific and insightful thoughts. Keep up the great work!
Did they find the north pole ? Many say there is a mountain there.
Thank you so much for sharing ❤
Bill ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Just from the title, I hate it. I am so tired of humans destroying nature.
What a wonderful production! it's come to life!
What verbose drivel.
So wonderful to hear a Coward play starring Michael Kitchen my favourite. Thank you so much!!
Thank you ❤
What a great play. I loved Lydia's philosophy of life and how it effected Charlie's life and it's contrast with Simon's philosophy.
They have a get your own oh yeah take a copy of mine
People who listen and read Wodehouse are generally 30 IQ points higher than the average blister
Maugham at his best. His understanding of the “lower” classes and the emotions that flow through them, as opposed to the taughtness of the English upper class is always poignant. The way Charles learns about real life grows slowly, but deeply, yet he is every bit a somewhat naive young English gentleman. The actress who played Lydia is totally brilliant - her normal emotions, her morality, her philosophy come through beautifully. And her voice and accent are marvelous. Thank you so much for posting this play. 🎭🌹 For anyone who found this story boring, you either in a bad mood or have no understanding of the feeling and milieu of the time, which is very evident and problematically ugly. The reasoning of his friend, Simon, is not only scary, but very evident in our time, also. And, it’s not a bit funny!!!! 😐😦
I was born in November of 1940.🎉
My Mum was born in January 1940. We just celebrated her 84th birthday on the 18th! 🎂
This is good! Great portrait of a time & place from the history of my culture I'll never see. Lydia in particular is very well acted. I had no idea Maugham would indicate sexual activity so well and discreetly!
This is one of the scariest ghost stories I've ever read, and it's almost unknown. I think this is the only recording of it on UA-cam. The awful fate of the protagonists has lingered in my mind for years. If there was ever a story that could convince you to get your life straightened out while there's still time, it's this one.
Thank you. Your channel looks most interesting.
Great voice actor
I'll post the rest of the chapters tomorrow
I appreciate that you choose to narrate this excellent, yet forgotten story 🤩💕
I kept waiting to feel something for these characters, but they all seemed like silly people posing. Not sure what I was supposed to come away with. The writing isn’t clever just contrived. Either Maugham hasn’t worn well or perhaps this isn’t a great example of his work. Or maybe as one commenter suggested the acting is not up to par. In any case the overall effect is dreary.
Perhaps you would enjoy one of his many other short stories or novels. He's a writer than gains a place with each generation so I would say he's stood the test of time for many. My favourite novel of his is 'Mrs Craddock' as it describes an independent thinking woman's choices in life and the impact they have as if he's entered the head of the character. Other favourite novels of mine are 'Of Human Bondage', 'The Painted Veil' and also 'The Razors Edge' all of which have been filmed a number of times in different decades. His short stories were made into a series of compilation films one of which is "Quartet". You may enjoy one of these and understand why he is rated as a writer by many.
Absolutely wasted by loud ads 😢
What do you mean "loud ads"
❤ WSM, ♥ Mary Wimbush, but….idk if it’s the writing or the acting but this one is not up to par, imo. Ty for the chance to hear this adaptation.
Where is Maugham's first-person narrator? Was this a play or short story?
Liked, subscribed, notifications on. Keep this Sci Fi stuff up. I listen to this stuff for hours, especially because I have insomnia and a lot of time. Lol Seriously, I am a huge vintage Sci Fi fan. Great job.
