So poignant rendition ❤️❤️

Since a Domingo fan has felt the need to mention preferring Domingo in this , I must say I saw PD sing it in Chicago with Sop. Ruth Welting and also saw Neil sing it, and for me Neil was far better in the role, in the acting and the vocal, not to "dis" the great tenor Domingo who I've seen often in the house since 1972 as Don Jose, if he preferred PD let him rave on the Domingo post about it, he is in the minority here and Shicoff was the greatest Hoffmann IMO , both in voice, emotion and acting ability, in his time according to many paid critics, no matter what is said by anyone on you tube, and most of them never saw him (or maybe anyone) sing it anyhow. Of course anyone can say anything on you tube, just In their opinion and I stand by mine, first hearing Neil in 1979 in Chicago and last in 2006, also in Chicago, and in many other cities and states including the Met. Bravo!
Love his voice! One more example of why he’s an Opera GOD to me.
Perfection!
I too have listened to every recorded version of this aria I’ve been able to & find this one by Lynne Dawson the most satisfying, Her light lyrical soprano grew w time, as is perfectly normal, but she never pushes or makes it deliberately hefty. Her interpretation is as emotionally weighty as one might wish, on the other hand. Her clarity, diction, simplicity, if I may use the term, & beauty of tone all go to serve Mozart’s marvellous music. How blessed are we to hear your blessed soprano, dear Miss Dawson informed by an enviable musicality. Brava!!
Maestro, your wonderful performance of this aria tore my heart out. I felt your utter disappointment and resignation of the world. Bravo is a frivolous word to use for your interpretation. My heart breaks.
His voice is so convincing, brings out so much emotions, master of master class!
Shining bell, shining heavy silky voice! How gorgeous! This is really a shining example of his handsome package, so so unfair, under broadcasted, Bravo!
Fantastic voice....thrilling!!
YES! I love this song. Does anyone have the lyrics? I've searched the interwebz in vain.
I love the tenor and the bass, the soprano, not so much.
I preferí the version with Domingo , Serra, Cotrubas ....
Echt eine Entdeckung
Definitive!
Beautiful singing by Shicoff. He was an exceptional tenor
Sublime !
Save for the accent, as good as Lemeshev. These two were able to voice the tragedy of a romantic dying uselessly for a woman who doesn't care about his poetry or true love. Many other great singers just cannot express this cry for a soul mate that he knows doesn't exist.
Agree.. he is the best, in everything he sings.. and Lensky's pride lead to his death and changed Onegin forever. Lensky and Tatiana were much better match...
Actually better than Lemeshev for there is no strain whatsoever in the voice which Lemeshev had at certain (high) notes.
Grand ténor grande voix beaucoup d'émotion Il est vrai que l'on ne peut plus rien écouter après cette prestation exceptionnelle.
I've listened to 15 versions of this aria today and clearly this is the best and I'm in agreement with comment below that speaks of this version in the same phrase with reference to Lucia Popp. Tessitura seems to be exactly suited to Dawson and Popp. Other soprani including some of the world noteworthy voices have a stretch to the top or seemingly need to give top notes more weight than I believe one might expect of a "lullaby"....though clearly more a staging fault of Mozart unless the voice for whom he wrote this was just as fortunate with her fach as are Dawson and Popp...
Zurab Sotkylava is as good as one can be!
we had an LP of Jill Gomez singing various french opera songs amongst other things...would anyone know the title of the album? cant find much on youtube of her....
Dear Paola, 1 year later but maybe no too late, here is some information: LP 1 A recital of French Songs / Jill Gomez with John Constable, piano. Sons by Bizet, Berlioz, Debussy. Published 1974. Saga Records 5388 (maybe other companies before or after) It has the beautiful sleevephoto that you see on this UA-cam-contribution. Regards, Koos the Neterlands. More info to follow.
There is LP 2 Mozart, sacred music Jill Gomez with Sinfonia of St Bartholomew and . Choir and Choral Society Published by Abbey Records LPB 773. year 1976.
LP 3 is the maybe most well known and superb Sons of the Auvergne (Canteloube) Jill Gomez and Royal Liverpool Phil. Orch. by Vernon Handley. Published Emi , EMX 41 2075 year: 1985.
LP 4 Britten & Simon Rattle with (among others) Four French Songs by Jill Gomez with City of Birmingham Orch. EMI Records ASD 4177 publ. 1982
LP 5 William Alwyn Song Cycles Jill Gomez and John Constable, piano, and others , Jill singing Invocations for soprano and piano. Chandos Records ABRD 1983-1984. and several more, but to start with these 5. Thanks. Koos.
Lynne's lovely version and Lucia Popp singing this lovely aria, Heaven.
Teddyb1939 Sandrine Piau does an exquisite interpretation too, tho’ Lynne’s is my favourite & I adore sorely missed Lucia Popp. 😢
Simply gorgeous. Jill Gomez the best. Who has more of her recordings to post?
Other suggestions made elsewhere above your reaction, regards from Holland.
This is my favourite interpretation of this exquisite piece. Lynne Dawson has a powerful lower range often missing in current sopranos
Una de mis arias handelianas favoritas.
Sang in right Russian it's important
Como siempre Shicoff MAGNÍFICO.
It's a beauty. Yess!
Vastly superior to Lesley Garrett. I saw Jill Gomez at the RFH in Mass Of Christ The King, (Malcom Williamson) Frank Shipway conductor, brilliant.
Good day,. the two singers (both of course excellent in their own field, I have records of both) are not to compared though. One is searching the limelight with much more show ,glitter and glamour , dresses and smiles, while the other one (Jill Gomez) is part of the music, using her voice like an instrument and dedicating all her qualities and musical intelligence to composer and the Art of Music. Nothing wrong with popularising music for a bigger audience maybe, but simply the two cannot be compared. Jill is a class of her own. Regards from the Netherlands and excuse my not perfect english.
Jill Gomez very nice voice, my favourite
Fantasticooo SHICOFF!!!!
CUANDO ESCUCHE POR PRIMERA VEZ ESTA ARIA ME EMOCIONE BASTANTE, PERO ESTA SOPRANO HACE QUE TODAS NUESTRAS VIRTUDES FLUYAN POR TODO NUESTRO CUERPO, HE ESCUCHADO OTRAS ARIAS DE UA-cam PERO ESTA ES LA MEJOR.
Ich hab eines der Konzerte damals in Frankreich gehört.... Lynne einfach fabelhaft....
@choirfreak26 I agree. To me, she is Britain's best soprano. I cannot think of anyone else of her standard in the UK ever. I think Lynne is way superior to the more, shall we say, marketed sopranos today. I cannot understand why she is not a big world sensation. She is up there with the best -Leontyne and Kiri. These ladies are of a previous generation though.
One of the best worldwide. Perhaps she didn't hanker after such acclaim? She's Head of the Opera & Vocal Depts at the RNCM, which keeps her busy. And she had two children to watch grow up. I wish her manifold blessings.
This is surely one of the loveliest arias ever written and Dawson, as expected, sings it exquisitely. What a delight. Thank you. I have the Academy of Ancient Music cd of the opera and I recommend it.
glänzende einspielung
I think he sings it best. Will definitely gonna see him in March at the Deutsche Oper!
Will second that. The recording of her singing Handel's Ode for Saint Cecilia's Day is heaven sent. It is amazing that such a jewel, such an immense musician should be so overlooked. Would definitely be a great joy to hear more of her.
What a lovely voice.A perfect Jill Gomez here still in her golden years She deserves more attention.Very little of her on youtube,so thank you very much.I saw her on stage in the Netherlands a few times(many years back)and she was not only a brilliant singer, but a nice person too.Managed a few photos and autographs! I remember she worked one evening with mezzo Carolyn Watkinson. The albums of Jill Gomez(French and Spanish recitals)are of high quality, like her brilliant Songs of the Auvergne
Beautiful voice!
He always puts his soul into the singing, thanks for putting this up, one of the best renditions I've heard.
