Steam Ship at Sea
Переглядів 85 тис.10 років тому
Just another routine day at sea. On a 900 ft container ship. The ship is powered by a steam turbine and reduction gear setup rated at 32,000 HP.

Is this ship still in service ?
Much prefer steamships Atlantic conveyor was ESD 3
Video would be much more interesting without the garbage music!!!
Man, how old is that thing? The bridge equipment looks like it came out of a maritime museum, and as for those lifeboats…were they spares for the Titanic?
Is She oil fired or diesel fired. My grandad had a Sidewinder trawler that was Steam powered And She was coal fired
bunker c
It is ex. "SEALAND RELIANCE" !!!
Shit music
Omg this is a real steam ship. Its so affordable
I noticed one thing that was unusual for the burners on the boiler. The oil burners were mounted horizontally floor level. I worked for 34 years in Steam Power Plants, the boilers I saw had burners mounted on a vertical wall, not horizontally on a floor.
The Foster Wheeler ESDIII boiler has its three burners in the roof of the furnace thus creating a long passage for the flame. At the lower end of the cooled screen between furnace and superheaters a passage for the gases is provided which than go upwards through the two superheaters and the economizer. Highly efficiënt boilers. I do not recall when this type came on the market, but the vessel I sailed on was built in 71. So, the floor that you see is actually at the top of the boiler. In the background is the uptake and between uptake and burners the steamdrum is partly visible.
@@janvisser2223 I sailed on a 1968 built steamship with top fired boilers. This design feature could be mid 60's
@@timp.9582 Agree Tim, tried to find it in my books and on the web but no succes. The vessel I sailed on had two of them supplying steam at 67 barg at 510 degr. C (sorry guys for not converting the figures to psi and F😏) Automation was by Askania 👍, single electric driven FD fan. Injecting Polarchem in the furnace by air injector! Sometimes a leaking handhole cover in a header. The huge compensator bellow between boiler stack and the economizer section that gave problems due to cracks in the corners. Removing the asbestos insulation and try to close the cracks with plastic steel was if course only a short lasting succes. All memories!
Very nice. No complaints about the music. It is a damn sight better than horrible rap or heavy metal.
operations cost so high
How many boilers are equipped how much there capacity and pressure and temperature, what type of steam turbine using how much the rpm. How much inlet pressure from turbine and vacuum pressure..??
Twin boilers, 850psig, 900F superheat temp. maybe total 150-200k lbs/hr flow rate, vessel speed maybe 20kts, vacuum condenser at 28in. Geared Cross compound HP and LP turbines for main engine. In the video you can see the Rpm indicator shown on the console and Kyma panel for SHP
Crap music junked another video👎🏻💩
Hermoso el océano como lo estraño, Marina militar, por viejo fuera de servicio
"Shaft Alley". I'm going to open a gentleman's club with the same name :-)
Sounds like a "special" gentleman's club
You would think by now people would not add shitty music to videos
Interesting but dreadful music
Try to find even more annoying music with next video.
The problem with this class of ship is they are fuel guzzlers. It is due to the wide stern configuration from when they carried LASH barges. When they were converted to containers they should have spent the money to narrow the stern. doing that would have saved a whole lot of money in fuel.
Yes, the block transom arrangement killed the propeller efficiency. Uncertain if the transoms were ever streamlined for those in the class converted for container carriage
I sailed on her sister, the Spirit, as 3rd Engineer. A damn fine ship that is kept up well, just like this ship.
What year is this ship? Didnt know steam was still a thing
Every modern nuke sub and aircraft carrier is a "steam thing".
@@brustar5152 how many percent of all the ships on the high seas is that😎?
Slow RPM
With steam you get more shaft horsepower with fewer final drive output RPM's, You can therefore use steeper pitch that advances you further through the water for each rev. .
Nice video, thanks.
Thanks, beautiful video, but i prefer the original sound.. i want listen the sound of motor .. boat, sea, wind..
Brings back memories. I was going to say that I doubted this was a steamship. But you are right. It is!
LASH steam plants = best engine room layout/arrangement
Don't know much about the LASH engine rooms but some steam turbine ships should be kept as an operational museum. So if you say these are the best this ship deserves it. Especially considering the very good state of it.
Sailed a few LASH (converted to container) ships as engineer. Both APL and Matson. I agree they were the best designed engine rooms.
Sailed with a Stal Laval installation, fully automatic, and very reliable.
LASH, is that why she got this unusual stern?

@2.19 if that klaxon went off you would sure wake up in a hurry...
I worked on a few steam ships...lovely and quiet at sea...pain in the arse to manoeuvre due to the gutless astern power of the little astern turbine which is a hallmark of most steam ships. Then there's that astronomical fuel consumption to think about...
Steam???? Where are the boilers and the coal?
2:45 Assume its boilers fired automatically with oil, which produces steam that goes through the turbine at 2:30 I believe
Coal? ha ha that funny. The furnace fronts were shown in the video. Nuclear plants are also steam. Basically the reactors replace the boilers. Steam power will be around for a very long time, long after we are dead and buried.
I really just don't get it. In the past 2 years I have seen a lot of you out there on many of my great subjects who just don't get it. One you all do a superb job in filming the subject and in the editing for the final post of videos...But WTF this is where you lose it. I just can't get a grip on what the heck you are thinking of. Music freeken MUSIC to subjects that will stand up to letting the background ambience play out all by it self to make the video stand out great. Gosh darn you hair balls, PLEASE STOP WITH THE FREEKEN MUSIC. Other than that, keep up the good work. :P P.S. Music videos go on the left...Way cool subject videos go on the right. DJ's please stay to the LEFT LOL :D
Not a good choice of music for a video about the sea. This is more like lounge music for the street. Even a traditional sea shanty would have been more appropriate for this.
Very interesting, but needs narration , not inane music background ! The music must be muted to watch the video.
I would rather take steam over diesel anyday. What ship was this by the way?
I saw a sign at 0:26 that looks like it says HORIZON RELIANCE.
السفينة البخارية في البحر
how old is this ship?
built 1980.... 37years
groovy were the boilermakers, how many #s slow moving fired hot water tanks bigger than that whats up w gay music
What a well maintained and clean ship. The plant rooms in quite a few vessels look more like a junk yard.
wilsjane, that is an advantage of steam propulsion. Only under the condensor you may find some rust😏
