Hello fellow New Yorker. Well, I am a transplant from Cali learning how to garden in upstate NY. I have noticed that Prince Tut and Queen Tut grow smaller and compact in the ground and way too big in pots. I fertilize everywhere, so I wonder why their sizes vary. Nice Garden. I have close to an acre. I can't wait for my garden to look as nice as your MIL's. I've only gardened for four seasons. Edit: those hydrangeas that didn't bloom could have also had a cold snap, which killed the flowering buds. I have the PW wee-bit series ones. Last year, they didn't bloom because the cold snap we had killed them blooms. this year they had maybe very few buds.

Hello there fellow New Yorker! Wow, I can imagine it was quite an adjustment with gardening moving from California. It’s great you have such a nice sized property. Lots of room to learn and grow! That’s interesting about the tuts in the ground vs. pots. My baby tut got huge and it is really too big for the pot I have it in. Will readjust next year. Great point about late frost too with the lack of hydrangea blooms. Definitely a possibility I wasn’t thinking about! I appreciate your comment. 😊

By September the zinnias I sowed in May are looking sad and tired while the seeds I sowed in June are looking much better - so I guess it was a good thing that you waited to sow the seeds.. Hi Hannah, I appreciate your comment and suggestions! Yes I realized oh man this is going to be a challenge and you just can’t pick your favorite plants. That’s hopeful to hear that your Incrediball hydrangeas do well! And I love Brunnera. Just got a couple plants last year (Jack Frost Heartleaf) and they are beautiful. I agree, the different colors and textures can be beautiful and I know my mom will appreciate low maintenance! 😊

Jen! What a fantastic video. Love seeing Grandma Patsy and her beautiful home. I can't wait for Part 2 because I know of spots in our yard that needs a boost of color but doesn't get much sun.

Hi Jen, I just had another thought! Does your Mom like Japanese Maples? You could find a dwarf size. I had one with too much sun so it didn’t make it. They like filtered sun & shade. Also dappled willow shrubs & trees have similar needs and are so beautiful with soft pink feathery leaves in the spring & variegated green/white leaves in the summer. I just planted a dappled willow in my semi shade bed. Can’t wait till the spring. I had two of them in my Canadian garden, I got a lot of compliments on them. 😊

@@MartinHouseFlowers you read my mind! I was wondering about the Japanese Maple this morning. But not sure because the shade is kind of deep and is not forgiving because of the position of the house. But possibly if I position further up?? Great suggestions. I also love your Willow that you planted. I love the movement and it’s just beautiful. I also thought about a fountain for her too as something to give height and interest if we are limited in plant choice. I feel like I’m driving myself a little bananas already. 😂 …. AND we both sometimes have a hard time making decisions.

@@PrettyLittleGarden2930 Japanese Maples are an investment for sure, agreed you want to make sure you get the right one & position it correctly. The Dappled willows come in shrubs too btw. I do like the idea of a fountain/bird bath if she’s willing to fill daily. I’m debating on filling ours with succulents if I can get drain holes drilled. It’s okay take your time selecting the plants, see what’s available for fall planting - prices are usually better! Otherwise you can always wait for spring. For me if I find the right plant at the right price, it’s worth trying!

Hi Jen, I love that you're doing this for your Mom! In addition to the shade plants you mentioned, maybe take a look at astilbe, azaleas, viburnum, euonymus (you have those!). I also have a variegated gold/green compact hosta, unfortunately I don't remember the variety but I'm sure there are a few compact varieties. As you mentioned there are lots of nice heuchera/coral bells as well that could work. I do like the idea of boxwoods! With hydrangeas, most need some sun to bloom. I have Bloomstruck in my north facing back yard and they do well, but I think they would have to be closer to the front so they get some of that afternoon sun in order to bloom. I know there are some oakleaf hydrangeas that also do well in shade. Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Anne, thank you!! Great suggestions. Very helpful. I think this is going to be a bit challenging with the hydrangeas. Have to think about it more because you are right they may need to move forward a bit to catch some type of sun. She did have that hydrangea that did well before she pruned it so that’s hopeful. Thank you!!! 😊
