With fabric woven uppers they will leak and are disgusting for £59 when they are made in China for £6 my grandson paid £59 for a pair of Nike trainers with fabric uppers and they leaked and fell apart....Nike is just a fashion name and you can pay £100+ for Better Nike's and they still don't last.

I've seen this in York before. I searched "orange orb ufo" and was frankly a bit shocked that York came up. I saw 3 of these between Bishopthorpe and Copmanthorpe on 26th December 2023. There were 3 in a row. I was out for a walk across the village green (escaping for an hour on Boxing Day...). I saw three orange lights over or beyond the village to the West. At first I thought nothing of it - street lights. But it then clicked that all our streetlights were changed to those (awful) white LEDs a few years back. Then I noticed they were moving. Rising up and down, from a straight line to a triangle with the middle being highest, then back to a line. The ones on the outsides then started moving inward towards the middle and outward again. So I think drones. Christmas presents. But they weren't doing anything really. Just moving around. With drones, you wanna take photos or zoom them about, not move them up and down aimlessly. Then the one on my left (furthest South) started moving very strangely. It would move away from the other two, flash brightly, and then move back towards the others, then flash again. It reminded me of a torch or headlight, where it will flash when pointed at you. It flashed as it turned. So I think aeroplanes? They have headlights and there's a few airfields in York. But it was silent that night, apart from the A64, and even that's relatively quiet on boxing day. I can normally hear low-flying planes, every summer when the rich folk come out to play. It was silent. Two of them are stationary, which would mean helicopters, and those are LOUD. And then I realised... this "plane" that's flashing would have to be facing me when the headlights catch my eye. But it doesn't seem to be coming towards me, and there's no turning time. A plane takes a while to turn around. This was move, flash, move, flash, move. And when it moves the other direction, there's no green light on the other side. So after trying (and failing) to take a video, I decided to run towards them. I know Bishopthorpe like the back of my hand. I ran as fast as I could taking shortcuts where possible. I made my way to the Western edge of the village out by the fields that meet the A64. And when I got there - nothing. They were gone. This is where it gets weird. At the edge of the village is a road (more of a track) between some trees - Copmanthorpe Lane. It has a field to the right (which is where the orbs would have been). I started to move along the track looking up at the sky, and I started to feel incredibly scared. I mean petrified. I felt like I was being watched. Like something knew I was there. As if they were still there but hiding. Obviously by now I'm thinking scary thoughts. I wanted to push through it, but I started to hear things around me - rustling and stuff. Those noises I put down to paranoia. Probably a badger or something. But the feeling I can't explain. So I turned and left. I just thought it's not worth it. I can't quite impress onto you how scared I was - I'm tearing up writing this. And yes I'm a fully grown adult. As I left, I saw two young lads in hoodies walking from the village and along the track under the trees. I wanted to ask if they'd seen them too, but I didn't. I've wondered ever since if they saw what I saw. I'd like to find them if they did.

A good pair of leather boots does the job. For years if properly dubbed and left to dry naturally. The fabric/Gore Tex/similar linings will let you down, sometimes sooner than later.

I've used Cheaper leather Berghaus Hillwalkers (£100) quite a few times and found them good on immediate comfort but all after a year of daily use have ended up cracked through the top where the foot bends and with a fair bit of walking on tarmac or gravel the sole is worn down in the centre. Treating with dubbin doesn't seem to stop the cracking. I would guess that loss of durability is the price of day 1 comfort.

Never heard of Leadel/Leedle but i spray waterproofing on my waterproof canvas boots every other week and rub minx oil/dubin into my smooth leather boots to keep my feet dry. Guarantee the LIDL boots let water in once the waterproofing has worn off, it's the same with any jacket, boots & trousers you buy that state waterproof unless they're welly boots or clothes are rubber plastic lined.

If your going to buy serious walking boots don't buy crap. Don't like Nothface gear, it more for the street neds Berghaus is the same, they'll all let you down very quickly, you pay cheap you get crap. Don't waste your money on goretex, it's only waterproof for so long. I bought a pair of Altberg tethras 8 years ago used them up the west coast of Scotland in July and September this year again and they still haven't let me down.

My £50 military surplus full leather, German para boots shit all over any of my synthetic £100+ 'waterproof' hiking boots. Anything with Event waterproofing are garbage, my feet were wet just from walking through wet grass. My German leather boots have been completely submerged in moorland hikes and my feet remained 100% dry. Main drawback is that they weigh 2x heavier.

A bargain at less than £20. You'll probably find that they will start to fall apart in less than 12 months. My partner made that mistake when she purchased a pair. My Brasher boots are now 15 years old and still dry due to regular waterproof spraying. OK they were £100 but fit like gloves and will probably last another 5 years.

If you are looking for a boot that is waterproof as opposed to water resistant then go for an army surplus boot which can also offer incredible value Ex British Army boots which as listed as Combat High Liability such as Altberg " Defender " of Haix are waterproof , also boots by Iturri ( Spanish Company ) being supplied to the British Army are also very good. Again picking up a boot that has been supplied to European forces can also be a bargain. The Swiss KS 90 boots are very waterproof OK some of these might be on the heavy side but a leather boot that you can proof with wax or dubbin is the way to go. Tends to spoil a walk if you go out and come back with wet feet ! Take care out there
