Project Ranger: Episode Three
We're back! It's been a little while, but with everything that has been going on with other cars, family members being very ill and in and out of hospital etc, we just haven't found the time for the car. Here's a video I filmed a little while ago, but didn't get around to editing. In real life right now, we still haven't really managed to get any more done, but I'll be making more of an effort for the rest of the year, I promise.

Engine Rebuild Pt.1: "Ah Sh*t, Here We Go Again"
Переглядів 1729 місяців тому
Wouldn't be a new year without the car breaking again would it? Join me this time to tear down my freshly recommissioned engine after the headgasket replacement late last year! We had some problems, mistakes were made, but we've got to put it right. In this episode, I get down to the nitty gritty and strip the top end off the engine again to assess the damage caused by my timing belt jumping a ...

Ahhhh that distinct polo starter noise
@@RusttoRichs 😂😂😂
The smell of the exhaust is in my nose 45 years later. It was hill ‘climb’ then
I've not seen Gurston Down before, so thanks for the upload. Hang on... A hillclimb... Shouldn't it be Gurston Up? Just kidding. I bet it's a handful in the rain.😲
@EleanorPeterson I would highly recommend visiting next year if you get the opportunity! It was apparently very wet on the Saturday and was a right handful!
I think gurston was one of my favourite hillclimbs
@@andybtec was my first time there, was great fun to watch!
Great video mate, I’m in the middle of part sourcing to do this conversion myself so this was massive help in explaining everything at a nice steady pace, I was planning to go down the mk2 dizzy ignition route so again loads of help . Looking nice and tidy too 😊
@Razcal_Worx thanks man, just glad I can put info out there to help people really, I know I struggled when doing mine so figured I'd just put it out there! Good luck with the conversion dude! Any questions give me a shout!
@@The_PoloChannel thanks mate
Feels like you didn't use your own money for this, I purchased mine and didn't get a banner or mug :P. Thank you very mug R-Tech :P
@@Chris-boots I can show you my receipt! Definitely paid for it out of my own money! Was probably because I'd reached out to chat to them about it!
Can the mk1 polo be a daily driver? What conversions from standard would it need to be a daily driver? How much should it cost to do a mk1 polo bike carb conversion? Leicestershire.. Thanks for the video
@Troy-eo4ic I wouldn't entirely be able to comment for the MK1 as a daily. I've used my standard 1.3 MK2F daily and it was always pretty mint. I've early the earlier mech heads can be a bit sluggish compared to modern traffic. Again, not sure on bike carb conversion for a MK1 but presumably very very similar if not exactly the same as mine!
I want to do this to my AEE polo , also what valve cover is that .. there isn't a lot of tuning here in the US for these
Yeah man, for sure!! This is a one year only valve cover, believe it one was 1986 Polo's and was a special model I think. They're kind of few and far between over in the UK though so I imagine very hard for you to get out there unless you have it shipped from the UK or EU. No, tbh, tuning is again hard to come by over here for these too, but an AFR gauge is massively helpful
I hava a polo coupe style mk2 from 1993 . What benefits dus this conversion have ?
@dylangeweetwel3373 hello! Power. At the end of the day it's a big trade off. More power, but a loss of some driveability, fuel economy, and can even reduce reliability. With the carbs, a high lift camshaft and an exhaust, I made 96bhp over the standard 55bhp
@@The_PoloChannel thanks for the info
What is the benefit of converting to carbs ? I have a polo coupe mk2 style 1993 model year
So for me, I fitted quite a big camshaft, at which point decided I needed more fuel, hence I chose the bike carbs. Throttle response is improved, they look incredible, and the sound is unbelievable 🤌🏻
My favourite bit is when I'm sat in the car waiting for your help wirh the steering wheel😂
Hahaha 😂😂 did make me chuckle 😂
Great video 👍🏼 enjoy watching these, great insight into the world of polos. Definitely helps with researching and working out things for my 2f coupe. As an mot tester myself, Reverse lamps aren't a testable item until September 2009 so if you wanted to keep the euro spec rear lamps you actually can 👍🏼
Hey man, thanks for the feedback dude! Glad it's useful for someone at least! Oh sweet, I didn't even think to check the manual for that, so thankyou, though I think Patrice would prefer white so people can see she's trying to reverse lol 😂
@@The_PoloChannel no worries, and yeah to be fair I understand that I still wired my reverse light switch back in after I fitted a new gearbox. Mine came with a reverse light and lens so it might aswell work 😅. Yeah the videos are helpful and also just really relatable. Ive found a few owners/mechanics gatekeep certain methods and items. I think we should all be sharing experiences with these little motors. Best vehicle I've ever purchased and as with any car they can be a pain but it's very much worth it to see these going around and still being enjoyed. Keep up the great work man 👍🏼✌🏼
@TheMiniEggMuncher haha yeah if it's there, may as well use it. Yeah, I've also found that over the years, I'd rather any information I know is out there for other people to know, than people in the same situation that ive been I'm fighting to figure stuff out! Again, thankyou for your kind words and support! 🤝🏻
when i changed from a corkseal to a rubber seal on my 1.8 8v i had to change the studs as well, could it be that your screws are bottening before you could tighten the valve cover correctly ?
It's a good shout, but on these they're a specially collared bolt specifically so that doesn't happen. The issue is when the rubber is transported it's usually all twisted up, and you can never get them to relax before fitting them
A realy nice Car, nice Work well done. Thank 's for this Video and have fun 😊. Cheers
Thankyou for the support! Make sure you're subscribed to see the new content coming very soon!
I cant w8 for the day i sit in my car and it starts up hahah
It'll come dude!
@The_PoloChannel need a manifold and then the loom plugging in and fingers crossed
@jameshalford4699 get it done dude!!
@@The_PoloChannel going to try and get abit more done sunday of weathers decent hahah
Yeah man! We were there!
nice man, think i saw your mk2 at players
Top work mate. Ive got a mk2f breadvan i bought from Salisbury just before NYE. ABD converted, tatty as hell but enjoying myself playing with the motor. Currently 77bhp and 137nm on SPI. Hopefully going for itbs with my cam soon.
Very nice man!! Sounds like fun! Stay tuned for more videos man, got some lined up now!
Hi guys nice work on the mk2 breadvan I had the GL 1.3 breadvan once upon a time and regrettably sold it
Thanks! Ah man, they're a very good car. Stay tuned for the next series, coming soon 🤝🏻
Amazing stuff mate. I'm in Surrey too. Literally about to have this done(professionally as I'm rubbish) to my 1988 breadvan! Subscribed!
Hey mam thanks for the support, I wish you all the best with the conversion dude, always willing to help where I can! Salisbury, not quite Surrey haha 👍🏻
Yo. Did the 50mm trumpet kit fit nicely? Wasn't sure how much of the optional extras I actually need for mine from DanST. I have a 1988 breadvan, it's the smaller engine. Thanks in advance.
@lazyreefer8749 yeah, so the 50mm trumpets kit is the perfect kit for a bike carb setup on a small block engine in a Polo. Really impressed with the fit of them mate 👌🏻
Ah thanks mate. I'll mention your channel when I put my order in(might get you some more stickers)🤣
@lazyreefer8749 haha, thanks mate 👌🏻
on that crusty corner, you really want to weld it properly. all mk2 polos rust there, a nice combination of 80s battery acid and decades of sitting rain water will do that. if you jump the polo, it is possible to bend the whole front right corner of the car up (I know this has happened where I live!)
It's on the cards. Will be getting it back in as soon as I get my welder!
👌
My cars not rusty😲
🌚🌚
You need a clip on mic 👌🏼 great vid tho bro!! 👌🏼👌🏼
Have got one since mate!
Great video, when you say you can run it with the spi ecu how does this work as surely the lack of TPS and MAF sensors would throw the ecu into a fit?
So, to my knowledge, there is no MAF sensor, and to be honest I don't think it has a TPS either, or if it is it'll be very primitive. Also, because the car has no engine management light/system so to speak, then you don't get any EML light or limp mode or anything on the dash. It would be difficult to answer this in its entirety myself, as I've not gone down this route. But some friends of mine are running this setup, and I know it works. Whether you subsequently forego power as the ignition advance is ECU controlled, I'm not sure but I know they'll run and work with all the fuel stuff unplugged. If you wanted some more info, I run a page on Facebook called Bike Carb Conversions. One of my admins, Toby has his car running on bike carbs with the SPI ECU etc, he would be able to give more information. Thanks for checking the video out! I'll drop the link to our facebook page below! m.facebook.com/groups/3497399703859879/?ref=share
@@The_PoloChannel brilliant thanks for the info
Nice 🎉
Great stuff, very valuable information! I got the mk2 polo, with carburetor and mechanical fuel pump, should be pretty simple to set up. And having done an engine swap before, I understand the pains with the wiring... it took me 2 weeks to just extract the necessary wiring from a donor car, while also removing everything not neccessary for the engine
Nice man. Thanks for the feedback. Yeah definitely took me a minute to figure out wiring and that mate. But my setup works so if it can help other people I will
Great stuff! Been thinking of doing this as well. Did you make the intake header yourself? Also what size jets do you run?
I did not no, I ordered my intake manifold from DanST Engineering. 140 mains mate 38 pilots I think from memory dude
@@The_PoloChannel Sounds about right, I heard someone used 160 for mains but that was too much. Thanks man!
@@taza99 will hopefully make an update video soon explaining the conversion and setup

Whens part 3?!
Brilliant content Dude, been looking for content like this as i own a 2f polo myself, but i am struggling with a lot of the jobs, as i am a florist so dont have much engine knowledge or experience with cars. if you happen to be in the wiltshire area, i'd love to see your winter build, and pick up some tips. [Can we expect part 3 soon dude?!]
Yo, so sorry have only just come across this! I live in Wiltshire yes! I lost all motivation with the car, and thus stopped filming for the channel, but after months I worked it out and git it running. I think I'm going to do a catch up video at some point
Nice one mate going to be doing the same on mine just after Christmas
Awesome hope it all goes well
I spot my car👀
You do indeed 👀
