To all the haters, stock rides and ammo, like to see if y’all can do better. Great video in my book.
Why is “ethical” in the name of the event? What makes it ethical?

Great video. And congrats on your personal best for the year. Gotta say I'm a little jealous. Groundhogs are pretty much a thing of the past around here. Haven't had any to shoot in quite a few years.

1:20 “They are so small” lol. That’s actually a pretty big target 500 and in shooting off a bench lol.

Nice to see a bunch of guys having fun.
Ewwwww
Some Observations: We are living in the golden age of rifle making. A completely stock Ruger American wins the competition. New technology allows rifle manufacturers to produce rifles with tighter tolerances. Observation #2: I love the 6.5 PRC. It is on my list to buy, but I was also impressed with how well the 257 Weatherby did which is a more outdated cartridge technology wise. It just goes to show that even the older cartridges can still perform really well when in the hands of a practiced shooter. Great video.
@@RT-gv6us thank you. More to come

1st guy needs to Drive the rifle
@@rickbrown8865 elaborate?
@@twistedbarreloutdoors9027 Long range “hitting” is an operation of sames. at 400+: Stay behind the rifle and glass so you can actively spot your shot should a correction be necessary. Run the action without loosing sight picture. Get a better purchase on the rifle. Watch it slip out of your pocket. The second guy very good example.
@@rickbrown8865 thank you

@@twistedbarreloutdoors9027 together we get stronger! Iron sharpens iron.
Does the bullet still have enough velocity at that range to expand or are u just punching holes?
@belovedwarrior483 depends what bullet and how much impact energy it has
@@twistedbarreloutdoors9027 I agree.....most ppl don't know their energy at longer ranges to make an ethical shot......even a 300 RUM only has about 900 foot lbs at 1000 yards
23:44 it looks like Jake has a hit
Ethical shot distance isnt determined by shooting from a bench
@johnarnold2278 thanks for your input. We will consider that next time!
Depends on where your hunting but shooting off a bench using a bipod is hardly any different than laying down using a bipod plus a lot of people have box stands or tripod ex, also your gonna put yourself in the best position for shooting if you would shoot a deer at 500 yards not like you’d be doing it free hand, and ethical shot is shot from a position your comfortable so I guess it kinda is determined by shooting from a bench. Or wherever your comfortable shooting.
@blade13847 laying on the ground with a bipod and a rear back or even putting a rock/stick under your arm is way more steady than those benches we shot from
10:13 the bipod is causing your rifle to bounce off target. Consider placing the bipod 90deg and not at 45Deg. That forward angle bipod trick causes lots of issues for many shooters.
@@heinrichstoltz1356 thank you
I will have to try it out. Usually have the muzzle brake on for shooting off a bench but never run the brake hunting with this rifle so it was off that day
This is just sad. What's the point of the huge rails, scopes, turrets, 6.5s, etc when you cannot even hit a GALLON JUG OF WATER at 300 yards. There are muzzleloaders and slug guns capable of those shots.
@@lunge2216 I urge you to try on a windy day
What is meant by "hunting rounds only"?
@NorthRiverGuide expanding round you would take deer with
@@twistedbarreloutdoors9027 ok, pretty much anything besides fmj, which would be a poor choice for this challenge anyways
@NorthRiverGuide we were just getting out and testing ourselves. The goal was just to see how well you'd do at shooting a deers vitals at those ranges. It was a windy day with random gusts and rain. Fun , but we all need more practice.
The target should be like Erik Cortina has it a stag with a 5" target at 500 yards and you have to hit the 5" target, not 4Lt milk jugs filled with water, plus that is so easy a .22lr can do that and thats what ELR shooting is all about maxing out the ammo and rifle at various distances plain and simple? 🦘✌👌
@7071t6 a milk jug is a great representation of a deers vitals. Round one was to see how far we cam push an ethical shot. Round two was just to have fun.
@7071t6 5 in plate would be moa at 500 but that is still a pretty small kill zone. Also if you take into account an elks vital zone is about 24 in.
@@twistedbarreloutdoors9027 i know its about shooting the 5" target at 500 yards, if your weapon system is accurate ,then it should be able to hit that small of a target plain and simple,a milk jug at that distance is like 4 times the size and they still missed? cheers mate 🦘✌👌
Nice rifles 👍🏼
Bergara in 6.5 PRC ❤
Well this proves there is no such thing as ethical long range hunting. Nice contest though.
All it proves is the effective range of these individual shooters.
Looks like a fun challenge 😊
@@dinsixiengmay9781 very fun
You used factory ammo....looks like you ran your chart with the velocity on the box. Maybe use a chronograph?
@jasonshults368 the box was 10 fps off from the chrono
With the Ruger American, oh yeah baby
@@IndependentArmz yep...
Yep. Gotta love it. Just goes to show you, an expensive rig does not make the shooter.
The point of an ethical shooting challenge is to make first round hits. If it takes you two or more rounds to hit your target it’s not an ethical shot.
@kevinkerr2847 if you shot at a coyote at 400 yards and misjudged a cross wind and miss the coyote by a few inches, but you had a spotter that could reliably call your shot, you wouldn't shoot another shot?
Also typically not shooting off a bench when hunting
@@twistedbarreloutdoors9027 an ethical shot is being reasonably sure that you can place a bullet in the vital zone not just hit an animal anywhere. A coyote is not going to just stand there for a second shot and I don’t know of anyone that can be reasonably confident of hitting a 5 inch vital zone on a running coyote at 400 yards.
@kevinkerr2847 your right! Thanks for your comment
In the end this is all just for fun. Looks like you guys had fun. Also learning about your skills and what can be worked on. I shoot milk jugs from 400 to 500 regularly across canyons. It took awhile before I could consistently hit them. Chronograph changed the game.
There was too much in the peanut gallery background noise. too bad it could have been a great video.
