The Biggest Misconceptions About Chinese Malaysians – Fact vs Fiction!
The Biggest Misconceptions About Chinese Malaysians - Fact vs Fiction!
🎊 Gong Xi Fa Cai! In this special Chinese New Year street interview, I meet Chinese Malaysians to dive deep into their culture, traditions, and identity in Malaysia. As they celebrate this important festival, we explore their views on diversity, racial harmony, and multiculturalism in Malaysia.
One of the key topics we discuss is interracial marriage-are Chinese Malaysians open to it? How do family traditions, cultural values, and societal expectations shape their choices when it comes to marrying outside their race?
Beyond that, we uncover some of the biggest misconceptions about Chinese Malaysians. What do other communities often get wrong about them? How do these misunderstandings affect their daily lives?
Since Chinese New Year in Malaysia is a time of unity, family gatherings, and cultural pride, we also talk about how this festival brings different races together and strengthens relationships across diverse backgrounds. From fireworks and lion dances to red packets (angpao) and traditional foods, we explore what makes this celebration so special for the Chinese community.
This video is packed with authentic street interviews, real voices, and deep insights into Malaysia’s multicultural identity. Whether you are Malaysian or just curious about Chinese culture, this is a must-watch!

Sunat = circumcised. Actually previously many non Malays have misconception that when they convert to Islam mean they have to be Malays, but now more non Muslims in Malaysia reverting to Islam, and they retain their original names and surnames as long as not contradict to Islam, and retain their cultures and relationship with non Muslim families. Now Malaysia also have more immigrants from China that are Muslims so Malaysian Chinese familiarized that Islam not just Malay or Arab religion, as there are more Chine Muslims in China than numbers of Muslims in Malaysia. Yes in Malaysia it is a must by law for non Muslims to convert to Muslim if they want to marry a Muslim either man or woman, but in Indonesia it is by choices not by law, and in Arab countries, a Muslim man can marry Ahl Kitab (People of the Book) either Christian or Jews without converting to Islam, but a Muslim woman still cannot married People of the Book due to the leader in a family has to be a Muslim. The common stereotype of three main races in Malaysia; Malay = lazy, too strict about religion especially Halal, have to clean/wash for poo/pee so the toilet always wet, special privilege for everything from the government (in fact not all Malays got it) Chinese = sneaky, good in business, clever in Math, chauvinist, not that loyal to Malaysia and still think China is their motherland, unclean as they eat pork and majority not wash/clean with water when they have poo/pee, racist towards darker skin included Malay, Indian and Africans, and not many can speak Malay fluently except for Chinese live in majority Malay areas eg Kelantan, Terengganu, Melaka (Baba Nyonya), who assimilated with local Malay cultures India = dangerous as many involved in gangster, smelly due to body odour (strong Indian curry), clever in IT, lawyer or doctor, this applied to mostly Tamil descent, most Indian living in the cities can speak fluent Malay compared to Chinese except who living in estates (majority Tamil), meanwhile Sikh are assimilated more with local and speak Malay fluently For indigenous people in Sabah and Sarawak (Borneo part of Malaysia) - they always have misconception that Peninsular Malaysia or Malaya is Malay land and people not united as they are in Borneo, and people in Malaya always look down on them and thought many of them still live in the jungle, and have house on the tree, hunting for food, etc. Malaysian Borneon always thought Malaya stealing oil revenue to develop Peninsular Malaysia especially Kuala Lumpur and their states left behind from the development. For Malaysians living in Peninsular Malaysia, some of them still have misconception that people in Sabah and Sarawak very different that people in Peninsular, mostly who never been to that part of Malaysia, but both are beautiful states, some of them also still thinking people in Sabah and Sarawak living in the forest, etc and need to be careful as they are good in vodoo/shaman. Lol. Nevertheless, majority of Malaysians regardless of races and religions are living in harmony and work together to develop the country and proud to be Malaysians wherever they go.

Malaysia jadi separated because of kurang pergaulan bermula Dari sekolah lagi. Kalau sekolah x di separate kan inshallah lebih aman makmur. Chinese and indian normally meet bila dah kerja. Baru nak kenal each other more closely. And our politician especially dap selalu tanamkan kebencian pada orang melayu. Kalau x dah ramai Chinese kawin dgn malay girl. Lagi satu, itu sunat bukan compulsory if you want to marry malay girl.

thats because of the policy which is based on our constitution. probably during the survey, they interviewed the non-bumiputera citizen, so of course they are not satisfied eventhough their ancestors agreed to it,and they will claim that our country is racist. in real, different story.thats why so many foreigners love malaysia and its people. go google "the most loved country in asia", so contradict, right? how come the second most racist country in the world become the most loved in asia? hahah look further than just the surface, or just opinion from the minorities who always have grudges

The Malays in Malaysia demonstrate remarkable tolerance towards other races. This was evident when the Federation of Malaya gained independence from the British in 1957, as the Malay community welcomed immigrants from China and India to share the country. However, this inclusivity was balanced with special privileges for Malay residents, which were agreed upon and intended to be upheld as long as supported by the Malay population. This arrangement does not infringe upon human rights; rather, it represents a mutually agreed-upon pact. The fairness of this agreement is underscored by the fact that the British granted independence to Malaya in 1957. Therefore, allegations of the Malays being a racist nation or claims of racial discrimination in Malaysia should cease.

I think it is a human natural behaviour stare to something they not accustomed to.....the difference is whether it is a stare of curiosity, a stare of hate/despise or etc.....when you arrived in the new places, you will get stared....that is common....for Malaysian it is stare of curiosity.... We malaysian value a privacy space of individual....we're not easily want to come to stranger/visitor and started to communicate...we afraid it will intimidating and violate personal space unless if you in trouble..and that we don't hesitate to come to you to offer help...so, if you want to befriended with local, you can start wil.just a small icebreaking chat...it will help break the barrier little by little....like topic about local food will be a great start

Msians are not friendly anymore to foreigners bcoz of ordeals from the past & influx of illegal immigrants... If u accuse them as not friendly, why not you start the friendliness gesture 1st

I understand your point, and you're right, sometimes the past can influence how people feel today. Starting with a friendly gesture can go a long way in breaking barriers and building trust. It’s always great to lead by example! 😊

These students from Nigeria, Chad, Sudan and Pakistan are well educated, open minded, and can adapt well with the environment and making friends with local Malaysians and other international students. Malaysians in general are friendly, welcoming, and warmth to foreigners hence this country is very diverse mostly in big cities. Malays in general have been accepting foreigners in generations and to be part of the society, such as Chinese, Indians, Thais, Pakistanis, Arabs and others and interracial marriage to became Malaysians. Yes some locals may curious about you at first, or they keep themselves to themselves as they don't want to disturb you, but when you learn some Malay words, they appreciate you and treat you as guests and one of ours. I have my good African friends from Nigeria, Gambia, Tanzania and other Arab countries while I was a student, and some of them married to Malaysians. In early 2000s we have influx of African students in Malaysia and some of them misused student visa for illegal activities included scamming locals and committing crimes, and majority of them were Nigerians, hence they had bad impressions about African in general and Nigerian speciifically, but in can happen anywhere in the world, not just in Malaysia where people tend to generalise all Arabs, Africans or Muslims are bad. Its not good, hence education is important.

67Years old is hardly young anymore. Japan rose from ashes of WW2 and becomes a developed nation in just 50 years. We have grown from agriculture to industrial economy for over 4 decades now. So, what have we learn from all the transfer of technology. We're not even a big names in consumer electronic products like Samsung, Toshiba and whatnot! Our progress is too slow! Last time I checked Malaysia are heading towards aging nation in 2030! So, much for a future!

I don't think Malaysia will be aging as fast as Japan. The cultural wise particularly Malay still believe in marriages. The population growth of Malays still can recover population replacement of 2.1. We just need 30% of the population to grow the economy and the rest to keep breeding for the future workforce.

There has been integrative harmony effectively solving the main issue of racial discrimination and racism in the small countries of former British colonies, notably Qatar, UAE, and Kuwait by denying local citizenships to their migrants for generations by collecting monthly migrant taxes and fees enriching their sons of soil instead of being pro Malayan Union granting local citizenship to millions having the fundamental rights of citizenship from the Great Land of China and India causing perpetual racial problems unnecessarily.

Malaysia's future is bright at present, just we should stop building skyscrapers and focus on upgrading school, university infrastructure and the quality of education to at least be in the top 50 in the world, if that is successfully, done, we can change our country easily and quickly when all of our citizens are educated and independent they know how to think creative and do business on their own, without having to rely on the government anymore and if we can't achieve that, we fuck, idiots and narrow brain people will restrain and block us from becoming a developed country, either the government or the common people

generational gap issue is faced globally, US, UK, anywhere you go now, people talk about this challenge. The older generation work hard, so the younger generation can be lazy and take a lot of mental health breaks from work. It's like what they say about the car "Volvo" it was well build back in the day, but now they look good but not as well build, ha ha.
