Atheist is an answer to your belief about the God claim... Theist means that you believe there is a god or gods... Atheist is the lack of acceptance of that positive claim. It's not a positive denial, as in I don't believe there is a god, it's simply the lack of acceptance of the claim there is a god. Agnostic is a claim about certainty or knowing... If you know there is a god you're a gnostic atheist... If you don't know but believe you're an agnostic theist... Same regarding agnostic and gnostic atheists... You can (and many are) an agnostic atheist towards all potential deities while being a gnostic atheist in regards to specific deities (the Greek gods).
