Day 1 best run 1:56.80. The only run where it hasn't refused to downshift into 2nd for the hairpin at the end of the first 3 straights. First in class by 1.11 at the moment and 15th outright from something like 116 entries. Awesome hillclimb!

2 runs from Rd4 of the NSW Hillclimb Championships yesterday at Kempsey. Wet all day and the locals said they'd never seen it so slippery. Won the Road Reg under 2500cc class, and thanks to the weather and smaller than normal field, 5th Outright and Fastest 2WD tin top! 7th Gen Celica, 1800cc 2ZZ-GE, PowerFC, ported header, Torsen LSD, BC coilovers, Rear swaybar, 215/50R15 A050M

Not quite as fast as last year. The Nankangs I used previously had a much larger range of sizes, allowing me to run wider fronts which improves the handling balance and lower OD for shorter gearing and better accelleration. Yokohama's range of sizes sucks so I lost both of those advantages this year. Also last year's Nankangs were a season old and ready to be replaced. I was waiting for the nex...

This was one of the more fun runs with a few little slides which is really what this car is about - RWD fun. It didn't downshift into 1st for the hairpin - that's what the hand gesture was about. I must have tried to downshift too early.

Changed from the Zeknova 140TW tyres to my usual Nankang AR1 semis for this event. So far it has lowered it's PB from 49.8 to 49.4 but the extra cornering grip and weight transfer has really highlighted how bad the LSD is on this poor old thing. It just fries the inside tyre going up the hills now. I'm lifting off in many places to avoid that. I fitted a ridiculously huge 30mm adjustable front ...
Celica Esses Hillclimb 2023 NSWHCC 31.67

Esses Hillclimb, for low powered cars, is basically a drag race with one corner in the middle. Celica relies on corner speed to make all its time, so there's not much it can do to go faster on this course. 31.67 was good enough for the class win on the day, but over half a second slower than the record.

      It's mainly about handling - BC coilovers, custom spring rates, Whiteline rear sway bar and alignment. Engine is stock. PowerFC to tune the lift point to lower rpm to gain mid range power. Port matched factory header and straight thru 2.5" rear muffler. 1ZZ baffled sump for some protection against oil surge. And I use 15" wheels with lower OD tyres to lower the gearing for better acceleration.

      It's got a PowerFC to bring the big cams in earlier to improve midrange power. And replaced the rear muffler with a 2.5 straight thru to make a bit of noise and save a few kg. Intake, headers and front half of the exhaust are stock.

      it was supposed to be a TrueTrac, but I suspect it might just have been a tightened stock cone LSD the way it seemed to open wheel up the 3rd hill into the right hander. Biggest let down was the dopey auto though. With a manual it would have been pretty good.

    I didn't bother with any more video on Sunday, but with a shock adjustment the car improved to 62.9 on the first run Sunday, then 62.6 and 62.7. I made another little tweak to the shocks and with one more run did a 62.1! Extremely happy with how the big VE performed up that tight twisty hillclimb! Very surprised it mananged not just to beat my old Soarer, but completely annihilate it's 63.5 PB. The Commo is a beast :)

    What's it like owning an ae111? Been looking into these cars for a while now

    • @hillclimbharry
      @hillclimbharry 4 роки тому

      They're getting a bit old tbh and most will need lots of maintenance. Most don't get it either because they're mainly owned by P platers these days. It's common for them to have a flat spot or miss when cold. Mine had it - coil failed tests, leads failed tests, distributor had oil in it. Replaced all those parts and kitted the dissy. Plus plugs and dissy cap and rotor. O2 sensor is also a common fault. They're also renowned for being tappety/noisy at idle. On mine this was caused by cam lobe wear. I'd say it's the case for most of them. They're renowned for using oil as well, and that's concerning because they only hold about 3L from memory, so you have to keep a close eye on that. Synchros are another common issue but pretty obvious when you test drive them. Mainly caused by people not using a GL4 oil imo. Superstrut components are generally pretty worn out by now and are a little pricey to replace. Most people just convert to Mac Struts, which kinda ruins them imo. Some parts like TPS are very hard to get now. I think they're NLA. In all honesty, we're past the Goldilocks period for owning any 90s import. You're going to be up for alot of maintenance, and prices are going up now too.

Skipping that run meant instead of winning my class by 17seconds over a Lotus Elise, I was last. Actually worse than last - "not eligible for a final result" was my official result lol

    I reckon there might just be a 63 in it - get rid of those 'comfort' lifts at a few of those turn-in points, and entering the esses a bit hotter is definitely possible. But there's lots of concrete and consequence up there... Definite 63 if I go another kg harder in those rear springs, but I think it's time to start on the ZZW30

      66.3 officially, so just over a tenth off - surprisingly close considering I had to make the GPS timer's start and finish lines on Google Maps! hehe Yeah, FWD is always going to under, and it's probably still a bit soft in the rear spring rates, and I'm still working out my plan of attack with the left foot braking here to reduce the understeer. Room for improvement in most corners yet. Hope it stays dry tomorrow - Hoping for a 65...

    • @tangles01
      @tangles01 6 років тому

      harrydoling thats impressive man... i reckon you could dial out a lot of the under steer mechanically... but i agree with your driving style. Need to carry that speed mid corner with low power... rockon you have a half second easy just from the mistake on the turn 9 mistake.

    • @hillclimbharry
      @hillclimbharry 6 років тому

      I didn't trouble too many apexes on that run either! Easily 65s in it the way it is. I've had a few people with fast FWDs tell me my rear spring rates are too soft compared to the front, and I haven't even given the thing an alignment yet - it's probably got far too much toe-in on the front. I did tweak the rear toe settings earlier this year, because it visibly had far too much rear toe-in. I'll have a look at the front this weekend.

    • @StriViK

    • @hillclimbharry
      @hillclimbharry 7 років тому

      Yep, BC's are pretty good. I didn't like the standard 14/10 spring setup though. 16/10 is much better balanced and still easily comfortable enough for daily driving. My track wheels are 18x9.5" +38 all round with 265/35 Nankang AR1 semis currently.

    • @StriViK
      @StriViK 7 років тому

      Appreciate the info, been looking to see what wheels that will work best for cornering. I like how your soarer performs out and impressed with it's cornering, might just copy your setup if that's okay. The +38 offset, did you experience any negative/positive effect from it? I'm assuming +50 will be ideal because of how the suspension geometry is.

    • @hillclimbharry

      +38 is a common offset and pretty tame, even completely road legal. No negative effects on handling imo.

    @nutbag36 yeah, Porsche demonstrating the strangely popular line at Hungry that keeps you inside the camber crest on the exit. Some people are scared of crossing that camber crest on the exit, some pretend that staying inside the on-camber section gives you better cornering speed, and others think that you need to stay left for the approach to Eastern Loop at the top of the hill. It was the only section of the track where I was faster than him though.
