Great idea - I’d also replace it with a replacement battery holder non-welded to make switching out new batteries easier
Thanks for the info
Fantastic tutorial on these power supplies!! Please keep at making new vids
This is exactly what i needed. O have opposite gun issue.
Beautiful game
Thanks for publishing this! I just ordered one of the last replacements based on your video, since there was really no feedback in the KLOV thread.
It is odd that there is practically zero feedback on this product that has been out for a couple years. You saw the reply on KLOV that I received when I raised these issues. I'm wondering if the other people that purchased a PCB actually built it or if they just shelved it as a future project. Being supplied an incorrect BOM with no alternative parts is extremely bush league if the seller had already successfully built the board.
I couldn't tell you the last time I've seen one work that well
Hey I will buy this if your willing to sell
Any idea I can get info on buyer 😏
Zach. I have the same machine. Can you help me with mine?
Hello, I could use some help with Mt model s if willing
Cool machine. Who is the PBR you mentioned twice for parts? Thanks
PBR = pinball resource = pbresource.com or Pabst Blue Ribbon. Both good choices.
@@zachgutzmer1172 Thanks for the reply Zack. I will check them out.
yes all the cool stuff from when we were kids are dieing from bad caps . the cool part is they were built well enough that they didnt need much else . rectifiers and reapplying heat sink compound goes a long ways
is it sold ?
Yes
@@zachgutzmer1172 ok
@@zachgutzmer1172 thanks
Are the sound effects or sound test available on the S Chip? Like of I bought am S model eprom and put it in a special eprom sound effects mp3 player o have from Chuck E. Cheese they used for sound effects on a chip, would o be able to scroll through all of the various sounds on this eprom too? BTW are "Skeeball Too" eproms hard to find? I had this whole box and power supply from a CEC version of Skeeball too bit before o realized the sound was stored on eproms I trashed it! Aggh!
Pretty cool! Beats the old funky Williams test fixture . =)
Nice fix! I think I've seen this one other time before. Rare for sure. Thanks for posting!
Came across your video and wondered if you could give me some insight as I am having issues with my SkeeBall game. I have a SBC-1-B-SP31A board. When I plug it in the fan will start, but no lights, sound, display, or ball button will work. It was working fine before, but all of a sudden had this issue. I tried unplugging and re-plugging and reviewing to see if there was any loose wires. None that I could see. My game is all original incandescence bulbs. I did not take the metal box apart to see the entire PCB. Any thoughts on what to look for or idea what is causing this?
If the 120v fan works you know you have AC power coming in. Your DC power supply section might not be working causing your issues, there is fuse on the main board that could be blown if a component shorted. You need to confirm you have good power before any other trouble shooting measures. After that is known good, you need to look at the ram chip and the game rom.
@@zachgutzmer1172 That was the problem, just needed to replace the fuse on the board near the power supply. Thanks for your help.
thanks for the information. I like your approach.
That’s a weird one
Zach I've seen a number of your videos re: skee ball machines. Are you able to reprogram the ROM on a classic skee ball? I have a model H that seems not to have the correct version of the firmware to support the 100 point holes but I understand that there is a version that does. That version is publicly available but beyond my ability to upload to my CPU (which is working great, just without this capability). Thanks for any assistance that you may be able to provide
If you can point me to the ROM file you need and you tell me the size of ROM your controller currently has in it I could burn one for you.
can you please tell me the difference between the model S and the model H? Thank you
They are completely different controllers or 'brains'. I've never worked on a Model H (older version) only the Model S (newer version).
@@zachgutzmer1172 thx
I have a pcb of this why are they so expsenve tho?
That’s actually quite something.. I’ve never seen those caps EVER fail and worked on hundreds of these
Woah, is this one with the version that Nintendo pirated?
this look fun (in 1980's)
Hello Zack I have question can this arcade screen connected with mister fpga ?
I can't help there, no experience with mister fpga
Generally the side of the fan that has blade guards is the output side; this one looks like it’s pointed up, which is the opposite as you described.
The fan was not factory, who ever replaced it pointed it up.
I was running a Rottendog MPU 327 on my Black Knight to. I found it had bugs in the program where the machine would crash during play and revert to Game Over mode. It also played havoc with the speech on the sound board. I had to get my orignal boards refurbished no it plays beautiful...
What revision # was your rottendog? I have a -1 in this knight (came with it) and it has worked fine
Williams sounds from the 80's were the absolute best!
Great video! Had my BPM for years and never knew this. My locks are missing. :)
Awesome - thanks for the info!
thank you. What a feature-filled machine!
This video deserves a comment . The sounds from this Game are nothing short of amazing . what an incredible layout .
Great video! Do you accept chassis for repair?
I do not. I keep too busy with my own repairs!
Zach we have had a 1991 Skee Ball machine for several years now. We have the dip switches set for free games and no tickets. It has worked great for the last several years but recently when power is turned on the 4 lights for free game, game over and winner illuminate but the ball count display and the scoring display do not light. Nothing happens when you hit the game start button. Any suggestions.
Jim - it sounds like your controller is no longer booting up. Check the two fuses (near the power cord should be good if the lights are on, and there is another on the circuit board by the fan) and make sure the controller is making good power (5v and 12 volts)
Thanks Zach. it looks like we have a model H. I checked the fuses and they look to be good. Looks like i have 18v on the 15v test point and 13.2v at the 13v test points. 6v on the speaker connector. Could not find 5v test spots marked on the board. i have someone that may take a look this week. Appreciate your insight.
On the LED versions you need that extra "white" wire because, the chip is a UCN5833A Serial-Input Latch Driver. Lookup the datasheet for the chip. If you trace it out on your display that white wire goes to PIN 4 which is the "Strobe" pin, this has to be set high after the end of the clock signal for 100 nano-seconds. I learned this when I was building an Arduino based controller. It will control the mini-bulb version and also the LED version but without that white wire the decimal and the number glitch like you showed. I learned from your video using pin 6 on the 4-player display allows you to use the LED display, very cool. Hit me up would love to chat about these.
Zack-you are amazing. I've watched my machine deteriorate. Now it lights up but doesn't start, no scoring, no solenoid ball release. i put a button in to bypass the coin switch so that doesn't work anymore. I'm not an EE, just a real estae lawyer. keep the machine for my grandkids. they reach under to release the balls! there are buys on ebay looking for $850 to repair the board! Any suggestion? Machine is in boston area going to Cape cod in a month or so.
Did the machine stop working immediately installing the credit button? When the machind is powered on, does the score display do the circling zero pattern indicating the machine is booted and in attract mode?
Hi, I'm arcade repairman Nick Mamich in Maine. I rebuild skee ball Printed circuit boards for $400. Please email me at nmamich@localnet.com with Model number and description of what functions work (during power up, do solenoids cycle? Does display show circle pattern. Also provide pictures the coin bypass switch and cpu board with power on.
if it won't coin up, check the connections and also replace the U7 VRAM, it has a battery in it that goes back. It has the "Dallas" label on it.
Nice find
Would love a drawing of your wiring harness you made up and what is the plug called that starts game and counts the 10 point scores
Its the 0.156" connector I point to around the 2:40 mark. Its shown in the schematics (I don't have them handy)
Great video! Didn't have the same issue but you showed the board which is what I needed to see. Seeing how clean your board was, do you repair? Do you have any working Model-S boards you would be willing to part with? Rehabbing a neglected Model S right now. Excellent overall and thank you!
I need help to get mine going again
I do not have any spare Model S controllers, sorry. I could likely fix yours if I had the entire machine, not sure if I can fully test it on the bench though with only the controller. What problems are you having?
Great video. Thanks for the detailed information on how to decipher the horseshoe unit.
You are welcome!
Awesome Explanation
nice
Great videos!
Your sound test produces the sound of the Elvira lock. Interesting, Earthshaker is my all time favorite and I don't have it on mine. Which rom sound revision is it?
I was going to make a comment about this but though 'nobody will notice it'. My Elvira is in attract mode a few machines away from earthshaker and happened to do the lock laugh around the 22 second mark :) It also happened to be when the music test was at 00 / off, so you know its not earthshaker!
@@zachgutzmer1172 Nice one. I was puzzled since I know this game by heart. This might have been a specific ROM. Thanks for the answer. As you could read, someone noticed!
You didn’t show the cartridge, so I’m going to assume the video’s a lie
Nope - authentic cart that I sold on ebay in 12/2013 for around $1250. This video was uploaded to show the cart working and I linked to it to support the pictures of the cart posted in the ebay auction. It's neat that people are still watching the video - I haven't checked back in since posting it!
@@zachgutzmer1172that’s the actual myriad version? The AVGN was right, they made absolutely no changes. It makes me question why that cart is so much more valuable to begin with.
@@TheCanaaniteUnionist Correct, the myriad version. I made this quick video to show that the cart was working when I sold it on ebay a decade ago. You could clearly see the original Caltron label underneath the very plain Myriad sticker, and the new sticker wasn't quite big enough to cover the original. I didn't show the cart in the video and people seeing this video now think it was a fake cart *eyeroll*. It is NOT the typical "look at my cool stuff" video that is more common now - I was just demonstrating the game worked.
@@TheCanaaniteUnionist And the story behind this cart was a friend of mine gave me his childhood small NES collection of games because he knew I collected them. The Myriad was in his collection and he didn't know how valuable it was. I didn't tell him and I sold it on Ebay but gave him all the money. He was quite surprised and was very thankful his mom didn't toss them out!
@@zachgutzmer1172 that’s such a cool and interesting story!
what kind of grease do you recommend to regrease the sequence motor. super lube ?
Interesting back glass. Ive seen a couple of designs but not that one
Its an aftermarket reproduction. Not sure of the source, but I have seen online pics of another machine with that same glass!
I actually own one! I worked fine when I got it, but it sat in climate controlled storage for a few years. The scoring is not working. I did try the units like you did in the video, they work, but the score still does not show. Any suggestions? Thanks for posting this video. Much appreciated!
I've been trying to find one for years. No one that owns one wants to sell theirs. I'll just livery vicariously through yall
Mark - if no lights are working, i would first check the 5amp fuse for the lights. Its the bottom one in the holder. Remove it and meter it for continuity to check if its good. Also make sure the fuse clips aren't blown out and they can firmly grip the fuse. Do that and report back.
@@zachgutzmer1172 Thanks for getting back to me. The fuse and block look good, but I think the problem is that I am missing the top fuse. The tilt light does work right now. But the scoring, lights and bells do not. Can you confirm that I need a 115 V 5 amp fuse there? Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated!
@@whoknewtoo Yep. Thats the right value fuse. According to the schematic, the tilt and scoring lights are on the same fuse. The scoring and bells are on another. Once you add the fuse you are missing, check it again. I assume the fuse you are missing is for the scoring and bells and none of the lights will work without power going to the scoring disk
Ok. All four fuses are good. I can manually touch the solenoids for scores, bells and lit scores. (at least most of them light), but the actually play field does not respond with the nickel or if I manually try the levers from behind.
