What a shame it was. 2000 miles of Railroad wasted .because of mismanagement and deferring maintenance

Outstanding! I have never seen the red and white PC logo. It looks much better than the all-white. Anyone know when or why it was ditched?

Railroads might be more efficient there days but they are nowhere near as interesting, I'm British and was lucky enough to spend six months near Chicago in the latter half of 1983, had a great time filming numerous railroads

I've been to the Starrucca Viaduct a few times but have yet to catch a train crossing it. That footage of the rail cars swaying on the viaduct as they pass high over that house is a bit concerning. BTW, I think that house is still there. If you look it up on google street view and compare the windows and layout it looks like the same building, but with a nice cosmetic upgrade, new siding, etc.

Funny story a freind told me that use to work in the yard there in Milwaukee. Those FM's would sit and idle all weekend and when Monday morning came around they were ready to pull long cuts of cars out of the yard. When they would start to really work, all the carbon that would accumulate from the weekend would get burned off along with all the other exhaust. He said they would smoke so bad that they would stop traffic up on the bridge and any pigeons that were thriving under the bridge would cease to do so. It was a guys job to go out and pick up all the dead pigeons which would fill a wheel barrow.

To explain the nickname "Skunk" for the California Western's passenger trains: When the first gasoline-electric motor cars were thus introduced on their Fort Bragg-Willits run in 1926, locals couldn't help but notice the overpowering smell of the gasoline exhaust as they passed by, with some comparing such to the smell of skunks. Now you know.

Cool. I stopped too soon one day! That Canandaigua branch work is awesome. I remember working short locals like that on the Monon before they became 100 car locals. Switching on hand signals was fun as was dropping cars.

Great stuff, this! Cherry on the sundae was seeing the Atlantic & Western’s crack intermodal train! Lol! Forgotten in todays railroading, circus style loading of TOFC cars was once a widely used “technology”! I recall N&W’s ramp in Winston-Salem beside the engine terminal. They’d spot several flats, drop the ramps between the cars and proceed to unload one trailer at a time with an old B series Mack truck. The real sign of skill was when the reloading process began, the driver had to back the trailers up the ramp and down the line of flats to the farthest position, crank down the landing gear, uncouple the truck, then run the hitch slowly up to the raised position, hoping that they’d spotted the trailer at the proper position to allow the kingpin to engage the hitch! Then they’d go get another trailer and repeat the operation, the good part being that each trip required less backing up than the previous! Excellent video! Thanks for capturing it all those years ago!

@@Joe-d7m6k That is sad to hear , back then it was a busy , busy place , both shops and yard. The four FPA4's were on site and the place was ALCO heaven . The Sharks were in Whitehall and a road trip was made to see them. Boy , I sure miss the D&H , what a classy outfit it was.
