Backpacking The Smokies: Forney Creek, Noland Creek Loop
This is a two night loop on the Forney Creek trail and Noland Creek trail from June 2024. I used Clingmans Dome road and the Noland Divide trail as a connector. The Little River gauge was at 1.5 and there was no rain in the forecast.

Been watching a lot of videos preparing for my hike in SMNP here on youtube and this, by far, is the best one I've come across. Thank you!

@@trailshoefilms4427 Just slightly worried about bears - But I know not to eat anywhere near my tent and to store my food on the hangs (And to not set up tent near the hangs). Anything else I should be aware of? Am I worrying too much?

@@zachtutor7998 I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but here are some habits I have adopted. When I am in the Smokies, I will not walk down trail with food in my waist pack or pants pockets. If I meet a habituated bear on trail I do not want to have a bag of trail mix in my hand. I keep all of my food in my pack and I will stop to eat. When I stop, I like to be in a spot on trail where I have a good line of sight i.e. not at a blind curve. When I get to camp, I put my food up on the cables first thing, then I set up camp. Bears are quiet, and a habituated bear can enter your camp while you have your head in your tent blowing up a sleeping pad, and make off with your food without you being aware that he is there. If I am eating in camp, I'm not doing another task that distracts me. I either eat, or do camp chores, I don't do both at the same time. I like to watch the tree line while I'm eating so if a bear does show up I can get my food on the cables as quickly as possible. I enjoy seeing bears. I am particularly fond of bears that are scared of me. I am less enthusiastic about bears that are not. The Smokies are fantastic, have fun with it.

Hello. Thank you for this video. I plan to take this route soon. I have one questions. Can you start at Fontana and not take a boat across the lake?

    • @trailshoefilms4427

I plan most of my hikes using the pdf version of the dollar map, which you can get from the link below. When you reference it you will see that the Lakeshore Trail does connect to the road that crosses Fontana Dam and then links up with Hazel Creek trail, so you can start a loop from there. I started from the tunnel for this hike because I had already done the Fontana end of the Lakeshore Trail on another hike. The boat shuttle does save ~ 10.6 miles of walking for those that want to get in and out of Hazel Creek quicker. www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/upload/GSMNP-Trail-Map_JULY21.pdf

@@trailshoefilms4427 Awesome thanks! I use the GoPro8 and the stabilization has been awesome for the trail. Looking at the Sony A7 Mark ii for the next camera I think. There is a ton of places to explore on my channel that might interest you. Would love to hear your feedback! Cheers!
