The design was great before you took out the gun (they use / build tech) and made it hold its own wee wee to shoot...
I am a firearms fanatic, a certified armorer for a few different platforms, I am also a law enforcement firearms instructor. I also happen to love 3d modeling and game design. I absolutely hate when artists design weapons and their associated animations that would not logically or mechanically work in real life, or they miss certain details that are crucial to the function of the weapon; if the game is suppose to be an action / shooter. It completely ruins the experience for me and really reflects the artist's lack of attention and/or their lack of care.
Starship Troopers needs a complete overhaul. I had no idea so much was sacrificed.
@@sonofeyeabovealleffoff5462 it’s short novel with a lot of cool concepts. At some point I will do video drawing a book accurate version of the mobile infantry power suits, which the book is very descriptive of.
Should have tested it with xNormal, as well.
so for a gun like this, are you adding new primitive shapes when you are adding to the gun and it's detail? Or could you use existing topology to add on to the gun? I'm learning blender and I love it, so much to learn but 4 months ago I knew nothing about modeling, now I know a little more and can create some stuff, nothing crazy but it's fun to see progress and I know I can create something special in the future with more persistence. edit - seems like you cover this in your steps. I appreciate the video thank you for your knowledge!

It's been a while since the last time I read it so I'm not sure if it was explicitly stated anywhere that the bug gun is a separate piece of technology. It was your first assumption though. Do I understand correctly that making it part of their body was your artistic decision?
@@karel3183 that’s my design decision, there is nothing in the book that really suggests this, perhaps other than the fact the federation troopers have a hard time telling the workers and the warriors apart (seeing a bug with a technological weapon would probably make this distinction easier)
If you use now the X16 samples the errors in normal maps are almost not noticeable, as it comes very smooth ;) for me substance painter is the best solution, no complications enter the software just make sure your HP aligns with your LP and bake and it's usually done, by the way when you are baking real "edges" per se in the LP you should still use some bevels, because if you don't have bevels your normal map is gonna look very fake and seams are gonna be obvious, so when ever you have an edge in your LP you need to bevel it, or subdivide it however you went into your process. For LP you can use bevels with 2 segments and that should be more than enough!
I prefer the novel 100000 times better than the terrible movie.
"but its your job as a weapon artist to know a bit about weapons" - i absolutly agree. i see it as a requirement to be a weapon artist. if you get the mechanical functionallity of a weapon it is easy to animate it in a game. if you have no clue how a gun operates the outcome shows!

I'll start praising your design, it's gorgeous and I loved your real life refferences, but I wanted to add that bugs usually have their chemichal weapons (vinegaroon and bombardier beetle) on the end of their abdomen because it's usually to attack the predator that is on it's back, since pseudo-arachnid aliens are genetically engineered for warfare, they could just shoot plasma for their mouth or any organ on placed on their front

Stuff like this is why I love the book also great job visualizing Heinlein's descriptions I found that to be the most maddening and funny thing was how he would describe something so vague and yet your brain could fill in some of the gaps i.e. (a mad man's idea of a spider or a steel gorilla).
What do you think about CAD modeling? Can I use a CAD model with ngons geometry for games?
Even in anime version they could fire beam ball from their mouth
I forget where i saw it but the skinnies of the animated series were the closest design to the look of the pseudoarachnids of the book, especially in the face.
do you think that the troopers scare the workers as much as the warriors scared those poor neodogs?
@@joaoemanuel9187 the worker bugs all flee as the battle commences (likely returning to the brain and queen casts underground). The only way to tell them apart from the warriors is by the shape of their carapace, though the rule of thumb is: “if he comes at you, he’s a warrior; if he runs, you can turn your back on him.”
as a Maya user I will never understand why it is so complicated in Blender
I like that you made the neodog still look like an actual dog with enhancements that doesn't strip it of the essence of the best qualities of being a dog. A dog that actually would want to be best friends with his handler. Other illustrations I've seen they look more like a hateful crime against nature, something more cyborg than dog, or some kind of cat/dog hybrid.
1st game was great, I never got to play the 2nd yet. Good Tutorial.

Book bugs and M.I. are the only way to go. The movie should be it's own universe separate from Heinlein's work.
True! there is plenty of reason to argue the verhoeven film is its own universe borrowing only simulacrum of the books core premise.
Why cyberpunk music (bro I got adrenaline by watching a blender video) loved it
i can't believe i just watched this to the end ... didn't understand anything from the actual cracking the egg from the end ... A whole video called How to Crack and egg and at the end you speed up the whole process of actually cracking the egg and it's zoomed out so that you can't read any of the blueprints! 90% of the video is about anything else than how to crack an egg and the end is just useless! AWESOMELY USELESS!
You should definitely do the bug's alien allies, base on the book & what yoi think they you look like.👍🖌️

My first introduction to Starship Troopers was the Verhoeven movie. I was surprised when I first read the book that the bugs in the book are as advanced as the humans. They even got FTL spaceships and knows Earth's location through the Skinnies and beam weaponry. The MI also very small in numbers with higher dropout rate in training and wears power armor. It even mentioned that most of them aren't soldier material. It got me hooked ever since.
Starship Troopers is my favorite book, so seeing a Neo Dog drawing is pretty rad. Basically looks how I imagined them.
I prefer this over the movie.

As awesome as your bug is, I prefer the bugs from the movie and the CGI TV series, they just look more like they would kill you than speak with you.

I want to ask something about substance painter baking problem for UV seam, could it be seamless in substance painter? it is because everytime I baked, in mesh map the normal seam would be very clear and it output a bad result in blender.
It depends, I don’t think I covered it in this video but blender uses an OpenGL normal and if you have directx normal like a lot SP presets output then you need to flip\invert the Y channel (green) on your normal map or just export an OpenGL normal . That’s one common mistake.
Always loved the concept from the book of actually intelligent bugs that go beyond the animalistic.

That's pretty awesome, and love the concept of The Arachnids relying on biomechanical weapons. Do you plan on also doing a book accurate sketch of the Mobile Infantry power armor?
I was thinking about it. The kids show “Roughnecks” actually had the troopers in fairly accurate power armor, as well as including skinnies alien race. I also did a video about my take on the Neo-dog.

which paper you use?
For this one, I used a 10X14" 100% cotton cold-pressed watercolor paper. I also stretched the paper after finishing the drawing phase. However, I also like to use cheaper papers and illustration boards depending on the project.

Ah textures, so newb here. I downloaded a 3d character model from Sketchfab and placed the .Blend and Texture files in the same location but only 3/4 textures are applying. Manually applying the last texture simply results in a huge string of “error” messages that look to be something to do with location? Is this model I found just busted or is this a newb issue? Thanks! More information, the giant list of errors have a ! symbol to the left and all say the same thing to the effect of (! Could not find ‘file name’ in “C:Users\me\file directory”)
