The idea of a Black or Afro noblemans society dates back a lot further than most people could ever dream. Surely further back than the existence of the USA. @TheSublimeLifestyle - Even Rev. Dr. MLK Jr. was a member of Sigma Pi Phi so I'm surprised you've never heard of that. Also, I'd recommend researching those Black Fraternities that were established tangentially with Prince Hall Masonry and unincorporated Black fraternities that came along well before the Jewels came together to form Alpha.

@ProverbTribune oh? I don't know about dozens. The only referenced black fraternity recorded before Alpha was Prince Hall Freemasonry in 1775. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

#FACT: APhiA was the 1st social, college based Black Greek Letter Organization. Other black fraternities (yes multiple) existed dozens & even 100 yrs before 1906..It is those Black fraternities dating back to the 1700s that are at the foundation of all Black Greek Letter Organizations today. @filamacan Well, now you're getting into the world of conjecture, and I don't play that game when it comes to my Honorable Founders. What is a fact is that the Primary Founder of Phi Beta Sigma, A.L. Taylor, had the idea of developing a Fraternity before he stepped foot on HU's campus. This alone separates Sigma from Kappa and Omega, in that we are not descended from AphiA by virtue of one of the founders being associated with the Alphas and forming an org in response to it..

@xodus1914 One of the Sigma Founders might have had the idea for the fraternity before hittin the yard but the other two may have tried other pastures before deciding in 1914 to go blue and white.

@leelee1947 Of course they knew about Alpha Phi Alpha...Thats where they got the idea from to start a Fraternity...The Omegas were founded at Howard where ALPHA was there already, our second chapter...As far as Kappa, I have heard that one of the Kappa founders either knew or met a member of A Phi A and got the idea from him...Like I said that is what I have heard...
