Powder Coating Mclaren Wheels (The Whole Process Pt. 1)
Today we are going through the whole process of refinishing wheels. This is what we do daily for our customers in the Phoenix metro area. These Mclaren wheels came up for sale and I had to have them. Our process includes breaking down the tires, checking the straightness of every wheel, straightening them if needed, stripping off the old paint, sand blasting, and then finally giving them a fresh look with some powdercoat.
It's a long process and requires lots of expensive tools/machines but with our skill we are able to this in a 24 hour time window. In part two we choose the color and get these wheels all finished.

Decades ago at my father's machine shop a guy would come around and exchange the smashed ones with newly cast ones for a fee. Also had trucks that came around like the ice cream man to sharpen knives and mower blades and the milk man collecting glass bottles. But now I only see a filthy van with freezers trying to sell crap steaks around my shop...lol

Where do you find those molds thats way better than buyung a new $30 hammer when they get too bent

This just doesnt at all seem safe. So you pound those LEAD hammers down to the nubs in two weeks and then recast them? So your shop is full of particle size pices of your lead hammers. Probably getting lead dust imbedded in you hands before you go eat, youre breathing that shit in, and im gonna go out on a limb and say youre not wearing a proper fume hood and shit when you recast them? Ill take "retarded people who will die before they're 40 for 500$ Alex."

i am pretty sure those hammers should be round. with round head and round handle they will last 10 times longer

    • @expressphoenix

I can appreciate that input. I used to make them from 1/2 pint paint cans and they did last longer.

The goodness of the feeling of the result is inversely proportional to the square of the time spent trying to achieve it. Inverse square law.

The lead powder absorbs into your pores. The fine lead particles which break off from pounding those hammers will blow or move into your eyes mouth and nose. Going to poison you.

I think the lead will be alright. He’s not drinking water from it. A gloved hand and casting a lead hammer once every 2 weeks in a ventilated area is not harmful. If he was sitting in a closed brewing up lead hammers all day he’d be in trouble. It’s a wonder anyone is alive if exposure to small amounts of lead was lethal. You all must be too young to remember leaded gas. It literally took our populations IQ down but guess what? We had people actively burning it all across the country and letting it out of their exhaust…

Probably would never. Not only does he make them in house which is a huge health hazard, he actually uses them repeatedly. So often that he has to smelt them into new hammers every so often repeating the exact same process that is killing him. If he made any of his employees do this, it would be several OSHA violations. If all you're trying to do is prevent scratching then you can use a steel hammer. Just put some leather or rubber over the end.
