Classically trained, Rob is a solo artist who has also performed with jazz trios, rock and reggae groups. Rob studied jazz piano for 7 years at Blue Bear School of Music in SF, CA, and is known for a clear and disciplined approach to improvisation. Career highlights include his longstanding relationship with jazz tenor sax great Sonny Lewis, and having the opportunity to perform with Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead.
I have my own sound -- there are elements of jazz, rock, and perhaps even classical music. Like Charlie Parker, I find myself "looking for the pretty notes." Some people think I sound kind a bit like Keith Jarrett, and I jokingly reply, "Sure, but after a couple cups of coffee, and with a little bit more of an edge." I love musicians that have their own sound -- like Bud Powell -- so mostly I just try to sound like myself. After all, if I don't, who will?

Rob at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts 8 18 24
It was a pleasure to play "walk-in" music for the Sonoma County Poet Laureate Inaugural event, hosted by the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. This half-hour set consists of several original, copyrighted compositions, followed by "All You Need Is Love" to bring on the poets! Congratulations to Dave Setter, the new Poet Laureate, and special thanks to Serafina Palendech, Executive Director, and Luna Sorrenti, Program Manager at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts, as well as former Laureates Gwynn O'Gara, Elizabeth Herron, Iris Dunkle, and Bill Vartnaw.

The Road/Another Dream. "The Road" is a poem by my wife, Gwynn O'Gara, that I set to music using a song that I wrote called "Another Dream." Peace Through Music, and love to you all.
Solo piano version of "Imagine," by John Lennon.

As I play, I listen to John's voice singing the lyrics in my mind, and that becomes the melody line that I play. Peace through Music, and love to you all. Imagine there's no heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us, only sky Imagine all the people Livin' for today Ah Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion, too Imagine all the peo...

The wheel is turning and you can't slow down, You can't let go and you can't hold on, You can't go back and you can't stand still, If the thunder don't get you then the lightning will. Won't you try just a little bit harder, Couldn't you try just a little bit more? Won't you try just a little bit harder, Couldn't you try just a little bit more? Round, round robin run round, got to get back to w...

One of the most beautiful love songs ever written. It is an honor and my great pleasure to bring it to solo piano. Enjoy, and Peace through Music. Today, I feel like pleasing you more than before Today, I know what I wanna do, but I don’t know what for To be living for you is all I want to do To be loving you it’ll all be there when my dreams come true Today you’ll make me say that I somehow ha...

These songs flow together in a smooth and natural way. The Beatles were aware of ska and reggae there is a reggae break in an early song of theirs, "I Call Your Name." Beatles and Bob Marley, all in one enjoy!

This track, and its album, made quite a splash. Love the bass line, and the overall concept of the song Steve Winwood is a master musician!

Playing this one is almost hypnotic for me the initial pattern of four chords could go on forever. This is one that I remember on the radio when I was growing up. Fun to now be able to bring it to life on the piano. . .

Classic Derek and the Dominoes (Eric Clapton, Duane Allman) track arranged for solo piano. I believe that Clapton and George Harrison were in love with the same woman, and that's why the intensity of this song has remained high.

02 Piano Teacher's Blues (Original Composition)

This was the second of three pieces that I performed at the 2019 Petaluma Honky-Tonk Piano Competition. I wrote this piece while teaching my piano student I wanted to show him how fun the minor blues can be to play. Somehow I combined the regular form with a turnaround from another one of my compositions, and the song was born. By adding the 6/8 feel, a sense of motion and urgency is created. I...

Greatest festival ever
It's great seeing these two artists together, each doing what they do best...
Very nice! I’d love to play this some day.
Hermosa version, Rob !!! ❤
Well done Ron, this was a high school classic for me and it continues to grow on me. I'm trying to replicate his solo after the first verse, there are some really interesting 'off key' chords at the end. I'm a beginning piano player, so let me know if you have any idea what notes those are. : )
Beautiful 🎶❤️🎶
thank you -- played this again just last night -- glad you enjoyed it
Thank you Rob this is beautiful ❤️🌹☝🏼
Very nice Rob ! Beautiful melody 🎶🌹⚡️
Very nice Rob ! 🎶🌞❤️
Thank you! This one is still in play, and could be on an upcoming album of originals -- thanks for listening!
Awesome. Sorry for auto incorrect on that last comment. I could listen to this all night.
Thank you, Nancy! I love playing this one -- I am fascinated by it.
Awrsome
Very nice Rob !
Glad you liked it -- I do enjoy playing this!
Hey Rob, I was delighted to find many other Dead songs you have online,I am enjoying listening to . Wharf rat is a real treat, each one a new joy of its own ! As a carpenter, everything I do on the computer is a learning process. I would like to ask your opinion , As a 65 year old guitar player by ear, to take my music to a higher level, should I focus on learning the notes or the scales ? I will enjoy countless hours of your piano music. I had learned of Holly Bolling a year ago, a similar interpretation of the Dead's music on piano. Thanks again, T Martin
I can assist you, T. In answer to your question, I think I would learn, or at least be aware of, the sixty chords. 12 notes in music notation -- A, A#, B, C, C# and so forth -- each note can have a major, minor, dominant 7th, Major 7th, and minor 7th chord built upon it. there are a few weirder variants, but this will get you miles down the road. As far as learning to play single note lead, there is an altered scale that seems to fit over a lot of the Dead's stuff -- same scale works for Dark Star/Wharf Rat in A, or the Other One etc in EM. The notes are A, B, C#, D, E F# G A.Chords for Dark Star are A, Em G A, repeated, for the Other One it's Em Bm D EM, repeated. Give these things a whirl, be in touch, and thank you for your kind words -- all best -- Rob
I have been a Grateful Dead fan since the free concert they played at Washington University in 1972 ! Can you imagine how much fun that was? We parked curbside under the trees and easily walked over to the soccer field for the show. For trivia sake, William & Mary Hall was a great place for shows back then. This beautiful piano tribute is wonderful !!!!!!! I know Jerry is loving it from above !!!!! The morning dew version was incredible ! I am thrilled to have just subscribed. Thank you, T Martin in Virginia
The honor is mine, T Martin!
GREAT STUFF!
Thank you so much, Andrew! I have just spent a bunch of time on the concert audio to create physical CDs. The remastered version sounds terrific -- the engineer really brought out the richness of the piano, which was a little jangly. The piano swayed so much during the first number, Jack Straw, that I had to stop the concert and they fixed it enough that I could continue. I have a website that you can check out -- www.robcatterton.com -- I've been doing a few singles -- three Beatles, one Marley, one Blind Faith, and one Frank Zappa (soon to be released). I love music, and the piano, so much. You can also check out www.sonnylewis.com -- a friend and mentor -- I have been publishing his music -- great jazz tenor who has played with many of the greats. OK -- all for now, and all best -- Rob
Nice cover
thank you, Alex -- I have been playing this song for many years -- I hope to release it as a single, get a super polished version together. I have two Grateful Dead tribute albums out -- if you search my name, they should come right up -- and a website that is my name, plus dot com. thanks again for listening, and commenting -- much appreciated -- Rob
You are simply amazing, Rob. No offense at all to your co-performers, but i get more out of the audio of you than of them. Your piano work is incredible. Please keep playing for all us heads, and for us who are piano players, please provide charts!
Hi Paul -- The dancers were actually a key enhancement -- just me on a bare stage would not have been the same for the audience, and I would have been much more self conscious. This was my only concert of this type to date! The weather was extreme, and they made a brave journey from Santa Cruz to perform with me -- I met them all the day of the gig, and what we did was very beautiful. The music is now available as an album -- "Live in the Redwoods -- A Grand Piano Tribute to the Grateful Dead" -- streamable and soon, CDs. Anything I can do to further my fellow pianists, I am happy to provide. I don't used scored music, but I might be able to help. all best -- Rob
Hey, thanks for sharing. I was looking for a Karaoke/instrumental version of this song (surprising nada. How is that?) and came across this. Anyway, put a smile on my face.
thank you, Chrispen!
I need to get her records, I missed a native, I bet am not the only one. a true treasure should have been a household name. we know the game of fame is not an equal opportunity founder. I once worked in several casinos and saw lounge acts that should have been in the main show room, fame is also very political. art is subjective medium, and like all art it rest on the opinions of people with power, is it fair, life is not about what is fair, power is the underlying culprit in the script of life. thank you David for exposing a great talent, keep on shining.
The mic stand doesn't matter at all. I just sat back, closed my eyes, and thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you for this beautiful composition Online.
Amazingly beautiful.
Nice music!
The change at 1:31 is incredible!
This is my favorite of your originals. Very nice!
Your original pieces are truly a heartfilled experience. Watched 2, on to the next.
