New subscriber here. 😊 I think one of the downsides of shopping at a grocery outlet is it is like thrifting, but for food and you end up buying things you normally wouldn’t have bought if you were at a traditional grocery store. It almost has you spending more money because it’s “a great deal”! For your budget to be so low for your family I’m not sure that the discount store is a good deal for you at this time. We are a family of 3 and I have set our budget at $1000 and I am also working on getting us out of debt.

Was really surprised that someone trying to stay under 200 a month would buy so much junk. I dont think there was a single healthy item .I get the unhealthy junk is often cheaper but I was surprised.

Michelle…you’re doing a lot better than you think. Budgeting $200 a month for a family of 5 in this economy is extremely difficult, and even if you go over $100, that to me, is incredible. You got this! I’ve learned a lot from you!

I think you would do better if you stopped thinking of it as $50/wk and started thinking that you will try to stay under $200/MONTH for groceries. If you stay under, carry the balance over to the next month. Buy the loss leaders and sale meats, and staples like milk, fruit and bread but meal plan for each week from the stuff you already have in your freezer, fridge and pantry. Vow to not waste ANY food. Eat it for lunch or freeze it and use it later. Its gonna be tough to feed 5 people on $200/mo though. BUT in order to even come close to being successful, you are going to HAVE to cut the snacking of junk food WAY down. Its not healthy, its expensive and its a horrible habit to teach your kids. You can make DOZENS of mini muffins from generic bisquick and a package of blueberries and/or a bottle of sprinkles from Walmart and then freeze them. You can put some dry cilantro (.89) at Walmart and some lime juice (from one of those plastic green limes at the store) into some white rice for 1/8th of the cost of that box of zatarain's you bought, and honestly you have to boil the rice anyway for both. Im a Foster Parent of tween/teen boys. These kids would eat us out of house and home. I want to feed them GOOD food so I provide string cheese, fruits, veggies and dip, and whole wheat bread for PB&Js for snacks. I buy it once a week and when its gone its gone. If they want "junk" food, juice or pop, they have to buy it with their money. I provide 3 meals a day that are protein heavy, healthy snacks and dessert. If they complain they are hungry between meals they are told to eat more at meal times. They also get one serving of dessert every evening of something that I make weekly from a mix that was on sale (usually unless I get something premade on DEEP sale) i.e. brownies, a frosted cake, cookies, bars, pudding, jello etc. I also meal plan and post the menu on the wall so they know what to eat and whats coming and so that I know that I have all the ingredients to cook all week. lol It DOES help believe it or not.

You can do it, keep pushing. I struggle with delayed gratification as well and also making sure we enjoy life a little as well

For those once a month meals out. Say it’s lunch. Everyone gets the $5 meal special, then pay for it with a discounted gift card. The $5 meal from McDonalds comes with a drink, ff and 2 meats. If you have small children they can split the meal between the 2. The family of 5 scenario would cost 5x$5=$25-20% off gift card=$20 for 5 people, not bad. For breakfast at say IHOP, go on Fat Tuesday. Everyone gets pancakes for free. Pay for drinks (coffee, milk, etc) with a discounted gift cards. 5 drinks x $3=$15-20% gc=$12. Fat Tuesday is the day before Lent. It changes every year so look it up for 2025, plan ahead. Feeling rich, order a side or 2 of meat and split it among the family.
