Marine Biodiversity Hub
Australia
Приєднався 24 вер 2012
The NESP Marine Biodiversity Hub, hosted by the University of Tasmania, builds on earlier programs (CERF and NESP) to provide information and understanding for biodiversity management and conservation in the marine environment, with funding of $23.88 million through the University of Tasmania. Australian Institute of Marine Science, Charles Darwin University, CSIRO, Geoscience Australia, Integrated Marine Observing System, Museum Victoria, New South Wales Department of Primary Industries, New South Wales Office of Environment and Heritage, University of Tasmania, University of Western Australia. The Marine Biodiversity Hub is funded by the Australian Government's National Environmental Science Programme. www.nespmarine.edu.au
Developing ocean best practices in Australia
This video presentation was first delivered at the Australian Marine Sciences Association 2021 conference. It presents the Field Manuals for Marine Sampling to Monitor Australian Waters as a proposed benchmark for the development of national best practices for Australia and other developed countries. The field manuals were produced through the Australian Government's National Environmental Science Program Marine Biodiversity Hub. More than 136 contributors from 53 agencies collaborated during the two versions of the best practices released in 2018 and 2020. The video outlines the iterative process and challenges associated with the development of these best practices, as well as a preliminary assessment of outcomes and impacts. Using learnings from this case study, we hope to inform a national framework for developing, adopting, and maintaining ocean best practices.

Brighter prospects for the Northern River Shark
Переглядів 2824 роки тому
A decade of Marine Biodiversity Hub Research led by Charles Darwin University shows the Northern River Shark to be more wide-ranging than previously thought, with new populations documented in several northern rivers. In 2010, the species was known from only 32 records in six rivers/estuaries; now more than 600 individuals have been recorded in 12 rivers/estuaries. Five genetically distinct pop...
How oyster reefs are built on Hercules
Переглядів 1604 роки тому
While studying remnant oyster reefs at Richmond River, New South Wales, Marine Biodiversity Hub project leader Ian McLeod of James Cook University and his team observed many Hercules club mud whelks (Pyrazus ebeninum) with oysters growing on their shells. Hercules club mud whelks are common large marine snails on Australia’s eastern coast. True to their name, they are foundational heroes of the...
Seamount Corals Survey 2018 Episode 5: Birds and Mammals
Переглядів 1655 років тому
This is the fifth episode in a series of five videos from the Seamount Corals Survey 2018, a month long voyage on CSIRO's Investigator to map and survey deep-sea coral reefs across an area of underwater seamounts south of Tasmania. The voyage criss-crossed many seamounts in and near the Huon and Tasman Fracture marine parks, which are home to both pristine and previously fished coral reefs. The...

Seamount Corals Survey 2018 Episode 1: Mapping for Management
Переглядів 3505 років тому
Mapping is the first step in understanding where different animals live on the seafloor and is essential to the management of marine parks. This is the first episode in a series of five videos from the Seamount Corals Survey 2018, a month long voyage on CSIRO Investigator to map and survey deep-sea coral reefs across an area of underwater seamounts south of Tasmania. Surveying fishes in the deeper waters of Ningaloo
Переглядів 2505 років тому
In August 2019, Marine Biodiversity Hub researchers sent cameras down to deep parts of Ningaloo Reef, revealing gardens of sponges and gorgonian sea fans populated by red emperor, gold band snapper, ornate rock lobster, comet grouper and potato rockcod. These are the treasures of Ningaloo Marine Park (Commonwealth waters). This offshore park, managed by Parks Australia, adjoins the inshore, sta...
Discovering black corals at Freycinet Marine Park
Переглядів 1045 років тому
Tasmanian deep ocean divers acting as citizen scientists took this first close-up look at stunning marine life on a deep granite reef in the Freycinet Marine Park off Bicheno, eastern Tasmania. Their footage shows an explosion of colourful sponges, gorgonian fans and other corals, clouds of butterfly perch and large, tree-forming black corals that may be new to science.
Urchins, sharks and shipwrecks: plotting life on Tasmania’s seafloor
Переглядів 2215 років тому
Marine Biodiversity Hub PhD student Darryn Sward is well acquainted with the marine life that dwells off Bicheno and the Tasman Peninsula. With her team from the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, she has ‘flown’ a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) across more than 33 kilometres of seafloor, recording life amid the swirling sediments and rocky reefs. Darryn's PhD research is helping to e...
Spot the cheeky eels! Surveying the reefs of St Lucia
Переглядів 1495 років тому
Early in 2109, Marine Biodiversity Hub researcher Jacquomo Monk visited the Caribbean island of St Lucia to guide researchers and fisheries officers in the use of baited remote underwater stereo video (stereo BRUV). Dr Monk’s visit was facilitated by the United Kingdom’s Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), which supports marine biodiversity mapping and monitoring ...
Mesophotic reefs in Hunter Marine Park
Переглядів 1545 років тому
A Marine Biodiversity Hub study of fish communities on mesophotic reefs has found these habitats deserve greater consideration in marine park zoning and fishery management. Fishes in the Port Stephens-Great Lakes and Hunter marine parks off New South Wales are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a rocky reef to dine out on. Extensive expanses of reef occur in this area ranging in depth ...
It's tough getting fish along to the BRUVS party
Переглядів 585 років тому
It's tough getting fish along to the BRUVS party . . . I am really keen to try DeepBRUVS deployments using sound vibration as an attractant. Sound propagates very easily in water, and spreads in 360 degrees. This is unlike the ‘smell’ plume from the berley, which will only travel down current and will become diluted the further away from the bait bag. Unfortunately testing sound to attract deep...
Tasmanian Seamounts: Australia's other coral reefs
Переглядів 3375 років тому
New areas of deep-sea coral reef and more than 100 unnamed species - including corals, lobsters and molluscs- have been discovered on undersea mountains in marine parks south of Tasmania. Scientists and park managers undertook a four-week survey of the seamounts on CSIRO research vessel Investigator in November-December 2018. The unusual cluster of more than 100 seamounts is world-renowned for ...

That was really good I enjoyed that video 😊
Keep up the good work Teresa 👍
Do they culture the worms? Would love some videos on how they keep sedentary polychaetes alive in the laboratory
Wow separating out the worms seems like a super labor-intensive process. Also they're tiny! Do they survive the trip to the surface?
Hi! This is such a great video. Me and my friends will conduct a sawfish conservation project in Indonesia soon. We thought this video will be a good education materials that we can use. To whom I should seek permission? Thanks in advance!
Did you kill it
You are a beautiful woman sorry I'm from Florida, but if I did live in Australia I would like to be with such a beautiful woman as you. Word🥰.
