Cleaning a CRT Television & Chatting about the channel
OH BOY here comes a good dosage for you of Steve talking completely unscripted for 41 minutes straight! As this year draws to a close, I wanted to share some thoughts with all of you about how things have been going on my channel and what my plans are for growing my content in the coming new year.
And rather than me just sitting around doing absolutely nothing while I ramble off my thoughts, I figure I'll eliminate two birds with one stone and use this time to also tidy up this neat little Sony KV-1221R that I was gifted recently from a good friend. Since it's in need of one anyway, I might as well show you my general process for cleaning objects like these as I take them into my collection.
This video is quite a departure from my usual content on my channel here, and also serves as a bit of an experiment for me to see what other kinds of content I can create and would be entertaining enough for my audience. Please by all means, toss me any feedback that you can in the comments on this video! I'd love to not only hear about ways I'd be able to improve my videos, but also if there's anything else that you'd like to see me feature on my channel during 2025!
And most importantly, I must thank every single one of you who have joined me so far on this little hobby of producing videos for UA-cam. Your enthusiasm for my content keeps driving me to make more, and hopefully I will have so much more for you during the new year.
See you all in 2025 folks!

Star Castle - My favorite game for the Vectrex (and my favorite arcade game too!)
Переглядів 23 тис.21 день тому
I've been wanting to make this one for a long time! Star Castle is a vector game originally released in the arcades by Cinematronics in 1980, and then later received a home port on GCE's Vectrex game console. Ever since acquiring my first Vectrex and grabbing myself a multicart, this game immediately took hold of my interests and quickly became my favorite title on the console! And much to my s...
The Radio Shack Armatron - One of the coolest toys from the '80s and a surprising mechanical marvel!

Here's a fun little blast from the past! Ever get to play around with the Armatron? This robot arm hails from the golden years of Radio Shack, back when they were churning out the absolute coolest toys and gizmos imaginable. Seriously, go take a look at one of their old catalogs from the 1980s and try not to drool over all the neat stuff they had to offer at the time. Perhaps one of the most we...

So the other day I finally fixed the worn out laser in my ceramic white PlayStation 2 slim model, and jeez what better way to celebrate the return of its ability to read discs again than by making a video about the television it pairs beautifully with! CRT Spotlight - The Sony KV-24FV300 - Perhaps one of the best CRTs I own?

Hello to you all! The inspiration behind this video came from a hypothetical scenario that one of my friends proposed to me. Theoretically, if I were stranded on a deserted island in the middle of nowhere, out of the 40-some-odd tube televisions I own, what would be the one that I would want to have along with me to keep me entertained? Ignoring the dilemma of figuring out how I am going to gen...

This one has been a long time coming! Time to show off one of the rarest and easily most obscure CRTs in my collection- and the car that it is attached to! My grandmother had one of these sets too. XP I didn't get to hook my Super Nintendo to it when I was visiting unfortunately, it was either always being used by my Grandfather, or my Grandmother to watch her "stories". Super Nintendo got hooked up to the RF only 13" TV in the guest bedroom, where I would spend most of my time while being baby sat during the summer, or on days where my folks still had to work but we didn't have any school.

    My grandparents had a RCA console TV, sadly by time they passed in 2015 the color was completely faded. Someday I am hoping to find an RCA console TV like this, with the composite ports, so I can hook up some retro video game consoles and perhaps a VCR. The raspberry pi video playback has me intrigued and I will be following to see how that goes.

      I haven't used that stuff on CRTs or other electronics at least, but I have used it in the past for treating automotive interiors! That stuff works great as a UV protectant. Maybe I'll consider trying it out on a television that I don't care about as much and see how the plastic shell works with it.

    On later ports it's absolutely incredible what modern developers can do on classic hardware simply because we have a much greater understanding of programming and exploiting what's there. Imagine for a moment that this Star Castle release was available back in the 80's! It would've changed EVERYTHING. The same is true of so many games written for classic hardware today.

    A Crush of Lucifer???? You have my interest. I'd bore you with tales of my Vectrex which I still have in the box. I need to reCAP it. I have most of the original titles, extra controller, dust cover, etc. All from my childhood. Received it for Christmas one year, never expecting it. I agree unequivocally that it is the best console of its day.

    • @StevesAssortedStuff
      @StevesAssortedStuff 4 дні тому

      I am the person that discovered the lost prototype for A Crush of Lucifer, if you take a look back at the earliest videos I have posted on my channel you can find the very first footage that was ever shared publicly of the game, before I worked with Sean Kelly to get the game completed and published. October of this year marks the 5th anniversary of when I uncovered the game, and for that milestone I'm highly considering putting together a documentary to tell the entire history of that prototype in one complete video. Definitely stay tuned for that! Best of luck recapping your Vectrex! Be advised, while I haven't had to do any work on my consoles yet, I've heard that the particular PCBs used inside the Vectrex are quite fragile and it can be very easy to accidentally pull a trace off the board if you aren't careful. Definitely approach working on yours with a gentle hand!

    • @StevesAssortedStuff
      @StevesAssortedStuff 7 днів тому

      That's a good question, unfortunately while I do have some understanding of the hardware in the Vectrex, I'm not sure if there is an actual hard limit to the number of lines the Vectrex is able to generate at any given time. From experience I do know that during certain graphically complex games the console can suffer from a bit of a slowdown when it's trying to render a lot at once, what exactly is the threshold where it starts to bog down though is hard to determine. I do also know that there are some homebrew cartridges out there with their own onboard processors that take a lot of the workload off of the Vectrex's own CPU, which in turn allows the CRT to render far more lines at a much faster rate than what you'd normally expect on a stock console.

    Thanks for the review, and look, of Star Castle. I first saw Star Castle in a pizza joint and figured it would never be ported over to the Atari 8-bit line of computers, which I had at the time. So, I used the Action! cartridge to recreate the game. It still ran in raster video but had colors and had the same game play. The Atari 800XL had player sprites for the ship, missiles and the "planet cannon", and the Action! cartridge compiled the program into executable code, so it ran pretty fast. These days I run an Atari STE 16-bit computer, and I might develop the game for this computer. Wait - you don't know of any port for the Atari ST line of computers, do you?

    • @StevesAssortedStuff
      @StevesAssortedStuff 7 днів тому

      Not that I know of, at least for original titles that were made for the Atari computers back in the day. Considering how Star Castle was able to be adapted to the 2600 though, I think a skilled enough programmer in the homebrew community should be able to port the game to nearly anything! Given the computing power of the ST line, I don't doubt at all that a pretty faithful port to those machines would be possible. If only I knew how to program! (the only language I personally have any familiarity with is C64 Basic).

    For unscripted content I think music is a great addition since it eliminates the silence when catching ur breath, or any other pauses. For scripted content I think talking is enough to make it a great video regardless of if it has music or not. I would efinitely want to see more unscripted videos doing crt restorations or just anything that does not need a script. You’ve also been a big inspiration for me to consider showing some of my own collection too on my channel. I’m excited to see what your channel is going to offer in the future!

      All good points! Thinking about it, I agree with your thoughts regarding background music being more suited for unscripted content like this video here. Perhaps when I make my next video in this style I'll experiment a bit during editing and see if I like any of the results. And as far as unscripted content, I'll definitely have more to come on my channel! It was a nice change of pace filming this one, instead getting to just discuss stuff stream-of-conscious style versus my usual script writing. I have an assortment of ideas for different things I could do on camera, I'm considering for my next one maybe just doing a show and tell about all the items I have in my electronics repair toolbox. I think it'll be neat getting to share the stuff that I like to use while working on various items in my collection. Love it! As per usual, my comments are purely conversational, as I so enjoy what you do, just as it is! As for music, in my personal opinion, I like how LGR and Techmoan have their intro/outro tunes and ALWAYS have their intro to make the channel feel more professional, like 20th Century Fox/Paramount/Disney logo in a movie-- 'settle in, here it comes'. Technology Connections also always has his outro music and all these channels use free music that has now become synonymous with their channel. I agree with you though that background music throughout is unnecessary and often distracting. I missed your awesome CRT Spotlight graphic at the beginning because my brain has started to associate that with your channel (even though you do more than just CRT). Maybe a new generalized 'Steve's Stuff' intro is warranted? As for sponsors, I think your mindset is PERFECT. Go with the flow and if you get a sponsorship from a company that you're 100% behind, the ads will match your personality and won't hurt the content. I definitely got 'Clint from LGR doing hurricane recovery' vibes from this clean up and I'm absolutely here for it. If you haven't seen it, it's just Clint wiping mold off of old tech junk and it's oddly watchable start to finish... But yeah, I think you're doing a FANTASTIC job! Keep it up!

    • @StevesAssortedStuff
      @StevesAssortedStuff 10 днів тому

      Hey man! I like your idea about having a generic channel intro that starts every video, I agree I like how LGR and Techmoan have little 5 second animations that play at the beginning of every one of their posts, almost like a channel ident that the TV/film studios have like you described. I have a few ideas of unique ones I can do for my channel here, I'll have to play around with them when I get the time coming up. I do really like using that degaussing intro that I do for my Spotlight series, maybe I can come up with a variation on that. Credit where credit is due, I also take a lot of influence from Clint of LGR as well. His chill laid back approach to documenting things absolutely is a note that I try to incorporate into my work as well. The amped up manic energy that seems to be more common among other presenters here on UA-cam just gets so irritating for me after a while, I certainly don't want to add to all that noise. LGR was actually one of the catalysts that got me making these videos in the first place, he was one of the featured guests at this past year's RWX and I chatted with him quite a bit over those few days in between periods when I was watching over my CRT wall (Clint, if you ever somehow stumble across my little channel here and happen to see this comment, thank you so much for all the encouragement you gave me!) But yeah, thanks for popping in again! Seeing viewers like you come back for more of my stuff excites me. I'm definitely considering making some of these longer "do stuff and chat" videos a thing on my channel, so totally expect more on top of all my usual stuff!

    • @adamlee333
      @adamlee333 10 днів тому

      @@StevesAssortedStuff The degaussing effect graphic is truly special. I really like the left-to-right wiggle. Whatever you choose, I say, include that! It's right up there with Techmoan's unique oscilloscope 3D-thing. You've got great taste. Don't doubt yourself. Do it!

    • @StevesAssortedStuff
      @StevesAssortedStuff 9 днів тому

      @@adamlee333 I've also been brainstorming different ways I can emulate the effects that were possible on the old Scanimate machines that were responsible for the bulk of the animated graphics and text you would find throughout television programs in the 70s and 80s (if you've never heard of Scanimate, look up some video on the machines. They were absolutely fascinating devices and it's a topic I would love to do a video on in the future). I love creating analog effects like that so I think it would make for a great medium to try to design a channel logo in a similar manner.
