Another thing is when I was in the 6th grade we were assigned to memories a poem. Mine was The Raven.
Wow! 6th grade!! Poe is tough! Good for you!
I wait till Saturday night to listen.
Thank you for another wonderful reading!
Thank you for being there. 😊
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Edgar Allan Edgar Allan Poe.
Just what I was thinking . . .
I’ve recently discovered you and I’m tearing through your stories as fast as I can. I can’t believe you listen to MFM as well! ❤
So what’s the verdict? Good intentions from this guy (in this story) or just a sleeze? 😇 or 😈
Shoulder
Ain't nobody going to sleep after that
Subscribed. This is my introduction to Flannery O'Connor. Thank you so very much. Funny how all the characters you are seemingly supposed to agree with in this are bitter, nasty, negative and rude, while the people you are seemingly supposed to be disgusted with are kind, generous, beautiful and cheerful. It is as if O'Connor has set a trap for the judgemental people in the world (at least, the ones who read her story). If you can survive the recitation of this story without being judgemental, perhaps you have passed a kind of spiritual test. To fail the test is to blunder into a trap which sets one on course that apologizes for the nasty, rude people in the story and condemns the sophisticated, genteel people in the story. Great job. Thanks for the content. Keep up the good work. בס'ד

"Our baseless optimism that is so much more appalling than our despair." If Greene felt this way, I find that very sad. And pretty appalling!
Greene’s work is always mesmerizing, but I don’t disagree with you.
4:40 thanks so much for this reading!
That wasn’t a story it was a hagiography! The implied virtue of the heroine was way too preachy for me.
5 in and still no Conrad Aiken. Bye.

Wonderful except for the music in the background!
Forty :)
Oh, wonderful! Thank you!

@Sharles: Thank you for your lovely comment. ❤
Atmosphere <3
I have heard many narrators read Agatha Christie however, you are bringing something new, refreshing to the playing out of this story. It’s really GREAT! 🎉
Evelan, you make it all worth it! ❤
❤
Hello Gena (and Marie😊)! I am so excited to listen to another one of your read-aloud books. I crave your voice when I am trying to fall asleep and unwind, but then I also enjoy listening to you when I am washing dishes. You have a wonderful voice and excellent taste in literature. God bless you!
And you! 😊 Thank you.
I love this story. Perfect to tuck into and fall asleep. The music selections with your readings enhance the dreamy mood. Thanks Gena!
The most annoying narrator ever . Well rehearsed over exaggerated . Great story, she just ruins it with her tone and inflection. The music is almost as annoying as her over exaggerating expressions. Terrible.
Guilt
Thank you great story! Alice Munro’s stories often hit me like a sledgehammer.
I love Alice, too. 😊
My husband used to say “Joyce Carol Oates is a member of our family.”
Wow! Literally?
@@GenaMarie-jw7bb No. Because I was always reading her and talking about her and her work. I’m a writer and when I read her first novel “Them” - it confirmed my choice of career. I always knew I’d be a writer, but Joyce’s writing ✍️ inspired me to sit down and start writing my own fiction.
Happy 100th birthday, James Baldwin!!
Locusts! As always, excellent choice of author. Love the musical selections with your reading.
We are finally back! Find out all about it next week! ❤
I wonder how Alice Munro and her work will now be interpreted now that it has been made public that her second husband, Gerald Fremlin, was a stupendously abusive step-father to Alice's youngest daughter.
I think she’ll be regarded as a person as complex and as human as one of her characters.
LOVE Shirley. So happy to find this, new sub.💜
That was a horror story....oh, man.
True!
Get on with it.
Geez, Jez! You haven’t found a way to fast forward yet? You’re so silly! Thanks for the comment, though. 😊
The music is perfect for the story and your reading is superb as always, Gena. I’m just about to get to part II. I can’t wait!
Julia, YOURE superb! Glad you’re enjoying it. 😊
Thank you.
BEST SHORT STORY I HAVE EVER READ
Bob, Graham Greene is a fabulous talent. We’ve done a few of his. Hope you can get a chance to hear them. Thanks for the comment.
Oh ffs get on with it.
Dear sweet Englishman! I’m sorry you don’t have fast forward capability! 🙃
Hi Gena! I've been over at UA-cam Music to listen to your earlier podcasts, and it's a cornucopia of listening pleasure. I am just now listening to The Red Pony. I have some things to say about this story! I am not able to comment on your podcast over there, it says comments are turned off. Just wondering if that is intentional. As always, love everything you do, and thank you!
Will get on that. Thanks. 😊 Those “Pony” episodes were our very first. Thanks for putting up with our broadcast learning curve. 😮😂
@GenaMarie-jw7bb They are just as enjoyable to me as your newest episodes.😍 One thing that I loved is that I could hear the pages of a book being turned. However, after The Red Pony, I am not a fan of Steinbeck. I found Jody to be a really nasty little boy!
If we start canceling people for being a product of their time and place there will be nobody left. I’m not familiar with o’Connor’s work but for me, if the work itself is not promoting racism then I’m fine with it.
That young man reminded me so much of my sanctimonious young self. You did his tone so well- it’s probably something we all remember and wince at.
Beautiful reading as always. This story had a bit confused. While swept along by the genial narration by the author you slowly start to realize he is very unhappy.
What a charming and witty story! More Osbourne please. Gena your interpretations are flawless.
I love this story, too! (And thank you. 😊)
Oh I don’t like Mrs Andersen. No I don’t.
Speaking to soft
Thanks. Many join us to fall asleep, but we’ll work on it. Please keep listening. 😊
Beautiful
Kate Chopin had such talent.
