Journey to Spirit Mountain (Score Video)
This is my second entry for Ryan Leach's Fall Composition Competition 2024. It's scored for a small orchestra, 2-2-2-2 4-3-3-1, timp + 2 perc, harp, strings. The audio is rendered entirely using MuseSounds.
This piece, inspired by the image by Ngan Pham, depicts an indigenous hunter journeying across the ocean on the back of a giant sea turtle. After a long journey, the hunter arrives at their destination, a forbidding land of jungles and mountains. They begin the arduous climb, and finally see an enormous, solemn, majestic deer spirit. Awestruck, the hunter continues to climb to commune with the deer spirit, as the music builds to a climax.
The piece uses a two-bar motif (the first two bars in the English horn) that repeats throughout the work. I couldn't resist quoting the Tortoises movement from Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals to depict the giant turtle crossing the ocean. In the middle section, as the hunter is climbing, a triplet arpeggio motif is introduced in the horns (echoing the preceding clarinet accompaniment). This subsequently transforms into an accompaniment figure in the violins on top of the melody in the trumpets, which is simply an elongated version of the initial motif. The horn countermelody is derived from the same two-bar motif. Finally the motif is partially quoted again in the trumpets as the piece draws to a close.

This is my first entry for Ryan Leach's Fall 2024 Composition Competition, based on artwork by Ngan Pham. It's scored for a small symphony orchestra, 2-2-2-2 4-3-3-1, timp 2 perc, harp, strings (6-6-6-6-3). The audio is rendered entirely using MuseSounds. The piece depicts an indigenous hunter traversing a dangerous jungle. The music starts by setting the scene, describing the jungle itself. Th...
Will Suno and Udio Put Human Composers Out of a Job?
Переглядів 8004 місяці тому
A couple months ago, I outlined the state of AI music, and the results weren't great. However, since then, Suno and Udio have burst onto the scene, and they can produce much better music than anything that came before it. A lot of composers are worried: will Suno and Udio put them out of a job? Chapters: 00:00 Introduction 00:43 Demo of Suno and Udio 07:32 All Your Score Are Belong To Us 17:02 ...
Will AI Make Composers Obsolete?
Переглядів 5108 місяців тому
There's been a lot of buzz in the artistic community recently about generative AI, and a lot of understandable fear about whether it's going to make composers go extinct. Since I have a background in composition but I've also developed neural networks, I thought I would chime in with my opinion. (Spoiler alert: No, I don't think it will.) In this video I'll show the current state of the art in ...
How to Fix One of the Most Common Notation Problems
Переглядів 1,6 тис.9 місяців тому
One of the most common problems I see in scores from amateur composers is misspelled accidentals. Sometimes the composers aren't sure what the "right" spelling is, or unaware that there even is one. This video tries to address all of the most common cases, and even some less common ones. I tried to keep this video short and to the point it's under 15 minutes long! So please tell me how you like...
Orchestration Techniques for Four-Part Harmony
Переглядів 9019 місяців тому
In this fourth and final video in this series on four-part harmony (aka four-voice counterpoint), I'll show you how you can turn your four-part harmony into a full orchestral piece! We'll arrange three very different versions of the original Bach chorale that I showed last time, and I'll show you the orchestration in detail. We'll summarize the techniques I used, and finally hear the two-minute...
A Demonstration of Four-Part Harmony (Four-Voice Bach-Style Counterpoint)
Переглядів 1,1 тис.10 місяців тому
In this third video in my series on four-part harmony, I'll show you where you can find melodies to practice harmonizing, work through a complete example, and show a couple of alternative harmonizations. To do this, I'll put the process I showed you last time into practice with an actual Bach chorale, and then compare it against Bach's own harmonization (spoiler alert: Bach's is better than min...
Comfort and Joy (Original Orchestral Carol Medley Score Video)
Переглядів 21210 місяців тому
I enjoy writing Christmas carol medleys - I particularly enjoy harmonizing carols in unexpected ways, or combining multiple carols at once. I wrote this particular medley for choir and orchestra in 2010, and I was quite happy with when I wrote it. I decided to dust it off recently: I made a nice condensed and cleaned up score, add a choir (kind of) singing the words, and produced this score vid...
Ontological Aria: And the Choir Will Be Glad! (Score Video)

Recently I made a video about four-part harmony. I was worried that discussing a bunch of rules would be dry and boring. So I did what anyone would do: I wrote an aria! It’s written in Handel’s style, using four-part harmony (naturally). The vocal part only spans on octave, low D to high D, so it should be in the range for any singer. The music is ontological: if the singer is singing about sus...
A Complete Guide to Writing Four-Part Harmony (Counterpoint)

This is the second video in my four-part series on four-part harmony (also called four-voice counterpoint). If you've ever tried to study species (Palestrina) counterpoint and found it too slow and painful, well, you might like this video! My goal is to teach you not only the process and rules of Bach counterpoint (four-part chorale harmonization), but also tell you the reasons why I think thos...
Why You Need to Learn Four-Part Harmony
Переглядів 3 тис.10 місяців тому
In this video, we'll discuss why four-part harmony (also called four-voice counterpoint) is an essential skill for any orchestral composer, even if you're not writing chorales or fugues. In this video, the first of a four-part series, we'll look at several examples, using classical pieces, film music and game music as our guide. In each case, we'll see how the basic structure of the music deriv...

How to Orchestrate Melodies with Character
Переглядів 2,2 тис.11 місяців тому
Do you have a simple melody with chords, but you aren't sure how to orchestrate it to achieve a certain emotion or character? In this video I'll show you the process I use, and we'll walk through an entire example, start to finish, transforming a simple melodic skeleton into a sad character. Then I'll show you some other examples that I prepared (comic, creepy, and epic). How we came up with th...
