The Wagon Witch
Приєднався 8 сер 2021
The outdoor lifestyle and ways of "The Wagon Witch" - aka Joolz Webb, UK artist, Nature lover, musician & cunning woman, living a simple life in the wagon-by-the-woods for over 20 years, with a permanent camp-kitchen. Join me at the campfire or wander through the woods with me to admire Nature, go foraging or discover new places. Hear a tale about local or English/Celtic folklore, or perhaps learn a thing or two about our herbs and flowers, their uses and metaphysical meanings.
Having spent many years camping, bush-crafting, backpacking and hiking I've learned a few lessons, I hope to share some of them here, including campfire recipes and kit. I hope to promote love and respect for Nature, her bounty and beauty. I intend to be realistic and honest about living this kind of lifestyle, full time, not just at weekends!

A reading of the Firewood Poems, from a booklet I produced and illustrated. There are numerous versions of these poems, some with additional or alternative lines or verses, some blending the two poems together and attributing them to the same author. I have chosen two of the most popular renditions here. The first poem, The Firewood Poem, is attributed to Lady Celia Congreve, first published in...
Weather the Storm. Overcoming challenges at the windy Wagon-by-the-woods!

Storm Darragh howls around the wagon-by-the-woods (Dec 2024). Thoughts about overcoming challenges versus living a "hard life." It was noisy around the wagon for a few days and nights, here on the Welsh borderlands - the wind whistling and howling, blowing things around, bits of branches falling on the roof (only small ones luckily!). Trees down in the woods and large branches on the lanes and ...

Belated solstice greeting,I always learn something new from your videos ,but much from this one,it's a shame the to main solstice days are not bank holidays here.but our pagan past seems to be subject to a cultural blackout. Wishing you and your family a healthy new year.
Hey Paul. Bright Solstice Blessings to you too. I'm glad you enjoyed the vid and gained something from it. Hopefully the rise in interest in our pagan past these days is illuminating the blackout a little, though it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction sometimes, as with many things! Hope you have a joyous New Year. 🌟
The sun stands still (sol-stice) for several days and (without telescopes) it takes a minimum of three days to discern its motion, so while it may have happened on the 21st (if they'd had our calendar) celebrations would be delayed to the 25th, when that motion could be confirmed.
@differous01 hi, and thanks for your comment, good point. I appreciate that the Solstices would have originally been calculated by a different system to that used today. I should perhaps have made the point in the video that the date (around 21st) we recognise today is according to the modern Gregorian calendar and the availability of more precise technology. I'll bear that in mind for future reference. Thank you for watching, much appreciated. 😊
@@thewagonwitch I think we take our calendars and telescopes for granted: without them we can only establish solstices AFTER the event, and the first new moon after that (if that had marked our new year) would vary between 1 to 30 days. The custom of the Twelfth Night of Elizabethan times seems like a compromise between holding a 1 (too short) and 30 day festival (too long: the Holly King's rubies will have fallen from his crown by then).
Enjoyed your video. Beautiful! One tip: When you pan with the camera, do it slowly and methodically rather than swinging back and forth. Cheers and Happy New Year!
Hi. I know, I'm still bad at the 'swinging around' thing at the moment!....I'm really trying to train myself to do things slowly, but sometimes I forget 🙄 My phone is also not well suited for some filming I think... but mostly it's operator error. I realise it's a bit of a dizzying experience to watch! i hope I will gradually improve with time and experience. Appreciate the advice, and thank you for watching.😊
@ very understandable to forget when you’re caught up in the moment sharing all that beauty that surrounds you! Cheers and Happy New Year! (almost)
Would the vikings cut down a tree for Yule log or would they collect a fallen tree?
I think a freshly cut tree would not burn well, so I imagine they would select a tree for the purpose and cut it well before needed, so it is well seasoned. Or perhaps find a dead, or standing dead tree to use. Thanks for watching😊
I always thought mistletoe was a parasite of apple trees. Its very, very rare for mistletoe to grow on oak and perhaps because of this, druids revered it.
You are quite right, mistletoe is usually a parasite on apple trees, or other fruit trees, including hawthorn - which is why it would be very special if found on an oak. I have never seen it growing on an oak but it does happen apparently. Thanks for watching 😊
This is a very beautiful film! I love the graphics and music, and you have a pleasant voice, as well. Cute dog in the forest! Hope you're having a wonderful Winter season so far. ❄️🌲🕯️🌲❄️ (I just hope that no one hurts the little wrens anymore. I was so sad to hear of that tradition. They are such cute birds! 🤎)
Hi Cynthia. I'm glad you enjoyed it. We have been having a lovely time so far, thank you. It will be a great many years since anyone will have harmed a wren for the purpose of Wren Day I think - it would be illegal now anyway I imagine. They use a symbolic or artificial bird now I believe. I love the little wren too, I have a regular visitor by the wagon, Sooooo loud for such a tiny bird too! Enjoy the rest of the festive season. 🌲
@@thewagonwitch Oh, thank you!! That is good to know. ☺️ We have wrens here where I live in California, too. They have beautiful songs. 🤎
@@Cynthia.B ooooh California! is it nice and warm there? It's very foggy and damp here at the moment (but we're promised some snow at new year so, fingers crossed, i love some snow!
@thewagonwitch Yes, it is warm here (southern California)! Lately, it's been around 70°F on average, which is about 21°C? So, it feels more like Spring. We had a good amount of rain the last 5 years or so, but it seems like this Winter will be a dry one. I can't complain, but I honestly love cold and rainy weather, too. We got a bit of snow one day in January 2011. That was fun! 🤍 I hope you get just the right amount! ❄️
@@Cynthia.B ooooh.... 70F.... delicious! I do love this time of year, but the persistent damp at the moment gets in the bones a little! Enjoy your lovely warmness!!

@ajrwilde14 ah, thank you for that, my mistake, i have corrected it. Kind regards.
Thank you for this gift! I enjoyed this so much, the beautiful images and lovely music blend to make this magical. I live off-grid on a mountain, but I live in desert terrain. It's beautiful in its own ways. I'm amazed by the variety of traditional medicinal plants grow wild up here. I love those wreaths! I bet they smell wonderful!
Hi! Thank you for your lovely comment, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Your home sounds amazing, I have no experience of deserts (I think the heat would melt me!) but I know there is great wildlife to be found. Nature provides wherever we be, if we let her thrive. Thank you Amy. Wishing you a bright Solstice and a warm Yule season 🎄🌟
Thank you so much for your heart warming beautiful video🌲May I ask where I could get the beautiful illustrated book, it would be a lovely gift for my best friend x
@healinghedgerow Hello 😊 thanks for watching my little film. I just printed the book and put together for myself and to give as gifts to friends, but I guess I could make some copies available if folks are interested. I don't sell outside UK because I can't deal with customs hassle and taxes malarkey! But if you in UK I could sell from my Etsy shop. I'll get onto it in the new year. I'm so pleased you like it 😁
What a fabulous tree! And what a shame it was destroyed. When you think of the fuss there has been over the Sycamore Gap tree, it`s a crazy world we live in. Thank you for remembering this tree.
It was a beauty, ancient and dying slowly, but very sad to have been finally destroyed by human hands, be it accidental or deliberate, we'll never know. But there are other old trees there still and the place is still very special.
Hello from South Wales, youtube has just shown me your channel, so I'm starting at the beginning. New subscriber looking forward to catching up.
@@mywildwelshgarden-es3fr Hi and welcome! Thanks so much for subscribing, I hope you'll enjoy it. 😊
Glad you ,the dog and hut survived the storm, its interesting what you said in the video ,and in the comments about hardship ,between challenges and forced hardship. And agree with what you said, when we compare our lives to our grandparents lives, ours are much easier in many terms, but in many ways these were much richer, not in monetary terms ,but in experiences of life, they seemed more content with the simple pleasures of life, one of my grandparents was a grave digger for 35 yrs, i have been doing labouring on and off all my life, whenever i do any sustained digging ie trenches, i think of him and have a connection to his life threw the spad, we are built for physical work, not sitting on our backsides looking at the screen, in the last few months, i started work as a support worker, working with physically and mentally disabled adults, which i found very humbling, but rewarding, on my days off i still labour when i can not so much for the money, but the pysical work, yesterday i was fencing in the wind and rain, im 58 now, will keep at it as long as im health, i only own a bike now no car just cycle everywhere yesterday 20 mile round trip to work.an old chap once said to me its" better to be poor and healthly than rich and bedridden". Richness should be about money ,but life experiences preferably shared with other's. All the best .😊
@PaulHOWE-e5l thanks Paul. You're definitely right that richness should be about ones quality of life, how loved ones and friends are priceless, how true happiness and fulfilment cannot be bought etc. I think of my grandparents as having been poor in money, but rich in life, love and laughter. Definitely do what you can while you can... life trots on pretty quickly the older you get I find.
Thank you for the reply, you are spot on about life speeding up as you get older!all the best for the weekend, look forward to your next offering.😊
Good to see you are both safe and well following Darragh. Probably safer than living in town to be honest - even some of the heavy concrete tiles have come off rooves round here! I love your words about the difference between hardship that is chosen and hardship that is out of our control. Me and my husband like wild camping in the hills and tarping in the woods and often say that chosen, natural discomfort is good for us. We feel it's probably more like we are meant to live. My CPTSD symptoms are always better when we're out. Thank you for sharing these experiences here. I appreciate them greatly. Warmest wishes to you too in this dark part of the year.
@amyjames6118 yes, it was a bit wild here, but settling down more now, just raining 🙄 I believe that those who truly live what could be viewed as a hard life, like my grandparents who were very poor (in money terms) but rich in life and love, perhaps don't see it as "hard" at the time, because they're used to it, it's how they live and get along. Perhaps hardship is how you see it, if you don't think it's hardship, it's not. I don't know if I'm explaining that well! Keep up the wild camping and outdoors for as long as you can while you still love it. Any time spent outdoors is good. Best wishes to you and your husband. 🌳
Wild and Woolly!
It looks like the good life to me. Imo, more people need to downsize their lives to live a better life. It's less stress & work, & it's more earth friendly. I truck drive the American west & intentionally chose to live full-time in the rig. It saves a lot of $$. And, when I'm not trucking, I live in my suv or a little 5x8 foot cargo trailer camper. (I'm always on wheels!) Less is More, is my philosophy. Thanks for showing the inside of your cute wagon👍
@kriskabin I believe it is the good life too 😁 Your life sounds great! I don't do so much travelling now, but I think it's the best way to "gather no moss"... I find that as soon as you stay in one place, you start to accumulate too much cr*p!! Which I am guilty of these days 🙄 Keep on truckin' and living life to the full friend.
I love your videos. Moments of clarity in the madness of modern life.
@amyjames6118 ah that's very kind of you, thank you. I'm very glad they bring you some pleasure 😊 Makes it worthwhile doing them.
Lovely little peep into your world, thank you. Such madness out in the mayhem of suburbia...I know what I prefer...rest, eat, walk or read but most importantly at this time of year, stay warm. Give your dog a cuddle from me 🙏🍁🍂🔥🤗
Glad you enjoyed it. I will give Min a hug on your behalf 😁🐶
When snow is on the ground like that it reminds me of iceing sugar. I know during winter i sleep more than in summer, is that the case for your self, also warmer in the hut too.😊
Hi Paul. Yes I think with the long nights and in colder weather we use more energy. Getting cosy with the stove going in the wagon too, and a nice warm comfy bed doesn't encourage me to get up early either! Hope you're well 😊
I'm very well thanks,I'm the same as you in winter, reluctant to leave a warm bed in winter.
Morning, when snow is on the ground like that, it always reminds me of iceing sugar, do you find yourself sleeping longer in the winter, due to more darkness,i know i do.😊
Thanks for sharing!
You lead a very hard life, but so beautiful
@MyMountainHomeandKitchen The benefits outweigh the negatives, so far at least. I try to make the most of what I have and be thankful for it. It's only as hard as you make it 🤍
@@thewagonwitch This is true!
Btw... you have inspired me to think about what I would consider to be a "hard life", and why I live as I do, which has been very interesting. So I'll be doing a vid about that soon I think. Thanks for the inspiration 🙏
@@thewagonwitch I think you are right and it is a matter of perspective. I lead what many people (family included) considers a hard life. But it's the life I've chosen (I think the "choice" part makes the difference)
Yes that is my conclusion too, it's only hard when you have no choice. I also choose this way, to keep me connected to what truly matters in life. I wish you much success and fulfilment in your chosen lifestyle. ☺️
You nearly had me nodding-off at the end there! Warm and snoozy.

Thanks Amy, Glad you enjoy it!
Thank you for that i had never heard of wassail, custom before probably as i have never lived in the south west.its good to see traditional customs veing practiced and kept alive.
Thanks Paul. Yes, the Wassailling is an old custom, somewhat revived in more recent years, practised in apple growing counties like Herefordshire, Somerset, Kent, Devon, Gloucestershire etc. Wassail originated as a borrowing from the Old Norse salutation ves heill, corresponding to Old English hál wes þú or wes hál; literally meaning 'be in good health' or 'be fortunate'. It usually happens on 12th night (6 Dec) or old 12th night (17 Dec).
@@thewagonwitch thanks for the explanation, I didn't wonder if it had norse origins myself. Keep warm and dry. If the weather is bad for you tonight.
