3 Days in the Norwegian Alps
Me and Elias spent a weekend walking through the alps of western Norway, starting in Molladalen, and heading towards Standal. Fog and poor visibility make it difficult to traverse the vertical landscape, but we make it work.

In late July 2022 I crossed part of the Hardangervidda mountain plateau. I was dropped off at the northern edge, and traversed the tundra, first southwardly and then turning westwards after a couple of days. I had never spent a full week alone, and certainly not so far from civilization. After seven days, I had walked close to 90kms, carrying around 22kgs. Let me know if you have any questions!...

    Great video. thanks! I will be in Femunden next week, plan to hike from Elgå to Langen, and then take the boat back to Elgå. Spennende!

    • @wohlhabendermanager

      @@Giskeoutdoors Det var veldig bra, men også veldig anstrengend. Kona mi og meg bor i Nortyskland, og det finnes ingen fjeller her (det høyeste "fjellet" er kanskje 160m "høy", haha). Terrenget var uvant for oss, og det finnes jo mange, mange steiner i femundsmarka. Vi klarte til å gå fra Elgå til Ljøsnåvollen (etapper var: Elgå til Svukuriset, Svukuriset til Røvollen, Røvollen til Muggsjølia og fra der til Ljøsnåvollen). Vi ville går videre til Langen, men jeg klarte ikke og forhåndsbestille ei hytte der, fordi hovedhuset var stengt allerede, og det var ingen teltplasser. Og værvarselet var veldig dårlig for de neste dagene, med starkregn. Jeg tror at det spillte noe rulle fordi den neste dagen var jeg dødssliten og orket ikke å gå på tur. Men folk på Ljøsnåvollen er veldig snill og veldig hjelpsom. Bonden kjørte oss til Røros (han måtte kjøre der uansett). Der bestillte vi ei hytte på camperingsplassen i 2 dager. Men det var alikevel en veldig bra erfaring. Vi klarte sågar å snakke litt norsk med noen nordmenn. :D PS: I'm sorry for any mistakes. I am trying my best. :)

      I used the Naturehike Vik 1, very light and inexpensive. A bit too light for the norwegian mountains in my opinion, since the winds can be very strong. After 20+ nights I experienced a malfunction due to the wind pushing a metal part into the rainfly eventually causing a leak. Definitely repairable, and for most users the tent is perfectly fine, but not quite robust enough for me😊

    The landscape is quite spectacular up there ! I wonder if the fog was created by the the difference between the warmer air and the cold snow left on the ground. You where right to be careful on the mountain , the terrain was very rugged . Crossing those streams can be challenging , I alway's detach my hip belt and chest strap when doing so in case I fall in the water . I hope you still enjoyed your hike despite the foggy weather . Thanks for sharing

    • @Giskeoutdoors
      @Giskeoutdoors 4 місяці тому

      I think you're exactly right. I remember on the second evening, the air went from completely clear to absolutely fogged out in a manner of minutes, which I think was caused by the cool air falling down the valley, and the warm air rising from the fjord. Detatching the clips and straps is a good rule of thumb, I remember doing that when I got halfway across the larger creek I waded last summer, after feelin the strength of the current. Very much enjoyed it, and especially when the weather cleared up enough on day 2 so that we could see more of the verticality! :)

    Hey very cool, have been looking into going here this July/August. What's the situation with cellphone reception? I'm planing to go alone and I'm not sure if I would need to get a Satellite phone. Also any tips regarding maps?

    • @Giskeoutdoors
      @Giskeoutdoors 5 місяців тому

      Thanks! Cell reception is very spotty, but if you can find a hill you might get lucky pretty deep into the park. After the trip I bought a garmin inreach mini, which lets me send messages through my phone as if I had reception and lets me get weather reports and do basic navigation. There are good paper maps, bought mine at the local sporting goods store south of Elgå. Main navigation was through the ut.no app, which lets you download maps and shows your position through your phones gps. There were several points in the trip were I was days away from the trail and moving through fairly rocky terrain. If I broke my leg or hit my head, I doubt I would be able to get help. Absolutely recomend getting some form of emergency communication device, such as an inreach.

      Takk for tipset, skal ta en titt! Disse støvlene er uforede, altså bare skinn og gummi på innsiden, så var faktisk ikke noe mer fukt i de enn det som naturlig kommer etter en tung marsj. Før jeg kryssa elva tok jeg ut også ut sålene, så de ikke skulle trekke vann😊.

    That poncho tarp is really nice! Do you leave the guy lines attached? Or do you attach them only when you need it as a tarp? Also, it looks like some areas had enough trees for hammock camping. Do you do that much, or at all?

    • @Giskeoutdoors
      @Giskeoutdoors 8 місяців тому

      I tried leaving them attached, so it would be faster to pitch in a hurry, but it did make it less usable as a poncho. So I think I will have to do some more testing to find a better way to use it. I love hammock camping, it was my go-to when I lived in the more forested eastern norway. Now that I live in the mountainous west, I mostly go for tents or just straight on the ground. There are still trees here, but I would be much more limited in camp site selection with a hammock.

    Can you use this sleeping bag as a jacket on breaks so you dont have to bring a down jacket? The pictures looks like it has a zip going both ways so you could theoretically have your feet and your arms out and walk around with it on, right?

    • @Giskeoutdoors
      @Giskeoutdoors 8 місяців тому

      Well, in theory yes. But in practical terms it definitely will not replace a jacket. The arm holes make it possible to do some camp tasks without leaving the bag, and it is possible to walk around like you say, but only on completely dry ground. It's about as useful as any other sleeping bag as a place to stay warm on longer breaks.

    • @Giskeoutdoors
      @Giskeoutdoors 8 місяців тому

      Thank you! Great to hear, hope you enjoy them (maybe the newer ones more so than the older😅). The jacket is by the brand Alaska. I liked it a lot, except that the arms were very short. I'm getting a larger one for this summer.
