    I just donated my kidney to a stranger 3 weeks ago. I am doing well and would encourage others who are considering donating to just do it.

      You are very generous and courageous. In my case, I am probably going to need both of my kidneys out due to disease. My question is about what is most important, actually the only important thing, to me. How bad were the first three days and you feel that your medical team adequately kept your pain under control? Stay well.

    He performed my transplant on 04 -14-2016. My donor wasn’t 100% match so he enrolled me nationwide ( pair exchange) program. I received a kidney from Louisiana and my donor gave his kidney to a Latina woman who already had transplant 35 years ago. It’s really a good program. We were 33 recipients and 33 donors. We all got our kidneys. He is a wonderful doctor❤️❤️

    Thank you so much for all this great information. My Dad has kidney failure and I'm considering donating one of my kidneys, assuming it's a match. I'm a bit nervous about the decision. And sometimes even have mixed feelings about it. But I would love to get another 10 years out of him God willing.

      Mate, i'm down the road in the process, hoping to give to my neighbours adult daughter. Im actually a match, so now i have to see if i'm OK to actually donate. I'm 68 but feel fairly robust, but still feel a little nervous. Although nervous i'm not for one second concerned about my decision, i've done my research, and the only change it will make is that i'm back riding my bike (used to race), and really on a mission to look after myself. Personally i'm not gunna live on what if's, i already know i cannot donate to my sister or nephew, i'm O and they are B+. Hope you become totally comfortable with your decision, it's OK to be nervous, i sure am, (i'm allergic to pain!). Remember, this is your decision, if you decide not to, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with that decision at all either. Good luck on your journey!

      @@markhill9275 thank you for your encouraging words. Your neighbors are blessed to have you as a neighbor. My dad just turned 77, so hopefully we can find someone here in the US to do the surgery. I read somewhere 65 or under was the preferred age for the recipient. But since it's a living donation and I want to give it to my dad, hopefully that will make it be ok and we can find someone to do the surgery. I'm amazed at the selflessness and bravery of people like yourself that are willing to give a kidney to a neighbor , or total stranger. God bless you all and best wishes moving forward with your surgery. You're a true blessing.

      @@matthawley5896 no sport, nothing special, its just the right thing to do, pretty simple. I just think, if that was someone i really loved what would i want, what would i do? Its your Dad, you love him, pretty simple that one. There are so many on the wait list, so a living donor is helping more than 1 person, by shortening the wait list. Im not cleared yet, think im gunna have to get my blood pressure down, but i will at least try.

    • @theMDMentor
      @theMDMentor Рік тому

      Do you have evidence of this happening? Typically all medical/transportation costs related to transplant are paid for donors, but I don't know for how long. This lawyer/donor just said that donors who develop ESKD themselves are given priority for transplant, and that this has NEVER happened.

    • @nedbrooks1234
      @nedbrooks1234 Рік тому

      Complications occur about 4% of the time, and they are usually minor issues that require an extra one or two days in the hospital. Hospitals typically follow a donor for two years. The National Kidney Registry has a suite of protections for donors, and they will cover medical costs related to the transplant if the transplant center disavows any responsibility.

  • @JeffByron
    @JeffByron Рік тому

    I was an undesignated kidney donor earlier this year. I was initially against the notion of paying donors because I believe only those who need the money would donate and thus exploit the poor. I've been and will continue to work with "wait listers" to tell their stories and cultivate more altruistic living donors. However, this proposal to modify NOTA and provide an equitable tax credit is a reasonable and potentially enormous way to improve and save many more lives. I endorse it. I also think we should take actions that will be needed as a result to increase the number of medical professionals and transplant centers as well as educate the public and inform and encourage donors. Such expenditures are also easily justified instead of continuing to grow the dialysis industry.

      Indeed an excellent approach. One suggestion. It is not only surrogate, egg, sperm, plasma donors, but please consider adding paid military service to the list. It is a higher risk and does operate with a disproportionately poor and people of color ratio. Yet we do it because we need the system and we recognize that paying willing particiipants is ethical

      People of all backgrounds donate. No one receives money to donate. This is about understandingvtgat There are too many people who don't care about others & would rather donate their good organs to embalming after death, and as a result people on organ waiting lists die every day. So these heros step up and donate a kidney because they care about humanity. You clearly can't relate to that, but give it some thought!

    I am kidney donor i am 30 . My question is if i get DM or HTN in my life the deterioration for ESKD will be faster as i have one kidney? Or the pre renal cause ( like those diseases ) will affect similarly one or two kidneys? My second question is : if the CKD in donor is not related to the donation by it self but related to other causes so why it is higher in donors ?

    I have a set of related questions for Garet Hil - would love an answer to any or all. Background: I'm a non-directed donor active in the NKR pool for almost two months, waiting for a match. I am type B, but mid-50s, physically small, and have 2 veins on my left kidney so those may be factors why it's taking a while. 1. From the NKR quarterly reports (thanks for posting those!) it looks like the pool size has been dropping for years. Is this just because more transplants are happening, or are there other factors? 2. Also the median length of chains has been shrinking - same reason? 3. The website says that Type A and AB NDDs will have a "long wait" attempting to start a chain - how long is typical? Is that also changing over time? 4. If an NDD doesn't get an offer during their availability window, does the NKR just let them go, or is there a procedure to fall back on a direct-to-waitlist donation? I really want to donate within the year of my initial tests, but don't want to give up the NKR protections! 5. In general, for those of us who want to do the most potential good with our spare but aren't Type O, what trends do you see or advice do you have to give? Thank you so much for everything you all do!
