If you are curious where my nickname Coolhand comes from, it's from the movie Flight of the Intruder. I remember, back in the 1990s and early 2000s, there were many flight sim enthusiasts who had this name (you'll probably guess I look forward to flying Heatblur's A-6 Intruder). Since at one point I was in a squadron called 101e ECV Quebec Air Force, I had added the 101e after my nickname and in most games I became known as Coolhand101e. I like flight sims, but mostly fly DCS, I also play other military type games; my other main game is Escape from Tarkov. You'll see that in the mix of videos in my LIVE section. I also race my Acura RSX (now equipped with a Japanese Type R engine) and my Subaru WRX STi on various lapping days during the summer (for my racing and car stuff, most of it is on Instagram, but I still have old vintage videos in here). What I share here is mostly for fun, but if it can help some of you, it's part the reason this channel exists. ENJOY!

Hey, looks like you hit 100 subs!
Yes. I think you may have a little something to do with this (as my 100th subscriber has a name that is quite similar to yours 🙃Maybe your whole family watches my streams together 😉Fine with me!). It's quite nice to reach that number for a channel that I thought would get views by maybe three of my gaming friends. 💯
@@Coolhand101e Ya, you got me. I usually don't subscribe to UA-cam channels but it was a good opportunity to put you over the top. Here's to your next 100!
Thanks for the stream ... and the shout-out. :)
Su-25(A) is, by far, my favourite FC3 plane.
I like it more every time I fly it!! In the past, I mostly used rockets for air to ground and the occasional R-60M for anti-helicopter, but I'm having fun discovering the other weapons like the laser-guided rockets in this video.
@@Coolhand101e You should give the cluster dispensers a try next time. Or the pivoting gun pods. Something right out of James Bond. :)
Regarding the rearming. Ya, the process should be intelligent enough to not reload ordnance that is already loaded. That's bugged me for years.
What I wonder is whether it is just lazy programming, or do they want "ANY" rearming to take as much time as the others (to be fair in multiplayer, for example). Either way, I agree it's just one of those things that can become annoying when you fly often.
@@Coolhand101e My money is on lazy.
English: I'm sad to hear that. I have the same number of frames per second as before, but with better looking graphics (I'm using google translator. I haven't practiced my Russian much since university in 1997).
@@Coolhand101e В наше время многие используют Google-переводчик, по этому я и пишу на русском) На форуме многие жаловались, что после обновления у них перестал нормально работать DCS именно на F-5E. Ждем новый патч.
(a belated) Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! :) Thanks for the playthrough and especially a bit of a briefing at the beginning.
Best wishes to you as well! I'm glad you enjoyed the mission and the briefing.
What mission is this and on which map? This hangar is so awesome!
It's not really a mission. I went into the editor and put a plane start from ground (cold) at King Adbullah II airfield in Jordan on the Syria map (coordinates BR34 in Jordan to the South). I put a few more planes as decorations around it on the parking to the South of the base where that nice hangar is. The flying F-5E I put on final to the airfield at 4500 ft.
@@Coolhand101e So much nicer compared to... everything else I have seen in DCS.
@@Tome4kkkk I think they added details and parking space to this air base and others on the Syria map in the September 30th patch. They mention it in the changelog, but even several months later I still discover some gems like that. On the Syria map, I've flown a lot from Gaziantep, from Incirlik, and from Cyprus, but there are other cool areas to explore.
@@Coolhand101e The continuous work Ugra Media puts info Syria Map is exactly the reason why I bought it, even not intending to install it for months. I Vought the NTTR booger od a map jest for trajning purposes.
Excellent presentation but please switch off that constant Sidewinder wine for future videos :)
I usually do when it is not needed, but I guess I forgot on this one. I did this really late before going to bed to show off some of the things that I felt should have been included on the launch of the remastered F-5E but only came with the X-Mas patch. The joys of "early access" I suppose. Nothing is ever finished/polished... same goes for this video. I do these LIVE and don't go back to edit them, sorry.
@Coolhand101e I didn't mean it to cone out like that, rather meant as a reminder for future videos and yes, I guessed right away - Christmas excitement for the beloved 5 gooddies :)
Nice! Do you happen to know if they added some new skins? And merry Christmas 🎅
Merry Christmas to you too!! 🎅🎁🎄 (I just tested your lase anything script the other day - it works amazingly well! My wingman dropped laser-guided bombs on a building with it in his F-5E the other night.). As far as skins are concerned, we still have the original 6 that were present on release; USAF Grey, Austria, Swiss, Norway, Aggressor desert, Aggressor blue. I'm still wishing for a texture template and maybe a refuelling probe one day... 😉
@Coolhand101e oh, thanks so much 😀 And also thanks for the info anout the skins. I am still waiting to install the new one, till we have either official skins or some nice user skins. I am sure it won't take long :) Meanwhile I watch you flying it 😉
good videos from you, but your volume is really low. hard to hear you.
Thanks for the comment. I know some of the pros out there have better microphone setups than mine. I use my headset's microphone. It's a quality Sennheiser headset, but if I turn the microphone up too loud, you hear the air coming out of my nose or the wires of the track IR and the headset rubbing together. I usually test the sound with OBS before broadcasting so that I'm not in the red (too high) or low in the greens. When I listen to my videos afterwards, I hear my voice just fine in my headphones though. You have to understand that these videos are done LIVE, as is, without any editing. Probably a dedicated microphone on a stand could work better, but then again, I talk as I fly, so I can't have something blocking my view in front of my monitor. I've thought about putting a "sponge-type" thing over the microphone to filter out air sounds, but I'm not doing this professionally. This channel is not even "moneytized" (or whatever the term might be). I share for fun with what I have. I admit that sometimes I could speak louder, but I'm also flipping switches, pressing buttons, moving the mouse, controlling the rudders while trying to keep my hands on the HOTAS to fly the plane!! 😅 Forgive me if my concentration is more on the flying part than on the strength of my voice projection. 😰🕹 I take note of it though. Thank you!
I haven't watched the whole stream but, so far, I think your vocal volume is fine and I appreciate not hearing breathing sounds. However, can you please turn the TACAN volume down/off next stream? That does get to me after a while. Thanks much.
@@kontiuka LOL, yes, I sometimes forget that it is there, the annoying BEEP BEEP of the TACAN. I know where the volume knob is, so I'll try to quiet it down or eliminate it when not needed next flight!!

Which cloud setup is this?
Hello, I'll just share all the settings if you want to recreate these conditions: Date: October 18, 2016, Time: 0730 - cloud preset: light rain 2, 8202 ft (I think it's default cloud height for this one). For the fog, set it to manual, at mission start (check box to sync with mission start) visibility 2001 ft, thickness 804 ft. then add a fog key (allows to modify fog at a later time): I set it at 0 : 42 in mission, visibility 14436 ft, thickness 770 ft - ENJOY!!

I believe your issue is that you need to reset the middle hook after you release it. In your demonstration you hit the button prior to take off so when you went to get the cargo and hook it, when you release it, the button doesn't work resulting in you needing to use the Emergency release. Just remember to reset the hook prior to next hook attempt and it should work each time you hit the release button. So basically, you only get one press for hook release per reset. Hook something, drop it, reset the hook and pick up again. Wash and repeat.
This "LIVE Broadcast" was made right after the Chinook was released, so I was trying things and only realised what you mention after the fact. In my reply to Yom-qf3mq I mentionned this: "Sometimes, I test the HOOK REL button to see if it works after flipping the cover; that apparently opens the hook which explains why I can't pick up the load on the first attempt in the video. The manual says that by turning the CARGO HOOK ARM Switch to the "Off" position, you close the hook so that it is ready to pick up the next object. Therefore, every time you drop an object with the HOOK REL button, you should cycle the CARGO HOOK ARM Switch to the "Off" position, and then back to ARM before you release the next cargo object. It seems to work for me now. I made another stream to show this and other things I learned. Also, if you can't drop, the EMERGENCY switch is a good go to option when all else fails!! "
what is the key to show the red cargo location BOX ? ( like the controls movement red box) also..is this Practice map your using uploaded anywhere? OR WOULD you upload it ? to share :)
It's called the "External Cargo Indicator" in the CH-47F Chinnok commands. I had also taken me a while to figure it out, so I mentionned it in the follow up LIVE that I had made (the "August 12th DCS Chinook Afghanistan" stream ua-cam.com/video/IaQTAGOiInI/v-deo.html - at 22 minutes 50 seconds).
Is the autopilot more like a "cheat" like in the Huey?
A bit yes... In the Huey, you get to choose if you want the "cheat" autopilot to fly for you with altitude hold, attitude hold, or fly you in a circle. In the Chinook, the "Bob" autopilot currently flies you in an 'altitude hold' pattern (flies you straight and level in other words), but as he flies for you, you can give it inputs on the cyclic to have him turn left/right without "knocking" the autopilot off. I'd have to check to be sure, but he might be able to change altitude - but I haven't used "Bob" for much more than flying the Chinook as I fire the guns, or if I need to scratch my butt while flying. 😅
This is the best military game but unlucky for me I don't have a laptop to download it i have a ps4 but i can't play it on it

@@Coolhand101eyep, unfortunatly the ground eats the arty gun on hookup, leading to jumps and in general a lot of bad things.. Hallo, what mission setup are you using? Thanks!
I’ve had issues with the hook immediately letting go of the cargo once it’s ’locked on’. Also had issues dropping cargo too 😂
Sometimes, I test the HOOK REL button to see if it works after flipping the cover; that apparently opens the hook which explains why I can't pick up the load on the first attempt in the video. The manual says that by turning the CARGO HOOK ARM Switch to the "Off" position, you close the hook so that it is ready to pick up the next object. For the second part of your message, about "dropping" cargo, I found back when I was learning how to carry cqargo with the Mi-8 last year that if I flew too fast, the cable would just snap/break and I would lose the cargo which would just drop to the ground - it was then lost forever. 😢
Thanks for replying. Yes, you’re correct. After reading the manual several times & multiple testing the following procedure MUST be applied. Once a load has bern released/dropped, the hook will remain in the open position until the CARGO HOOK MSTR switch is set to the ‘OFF’ position. Any attempts to carry additional loads will fail until the CARGO HOOK MSTR switch has been set to the ‘OFF’ position before being set back to the ‘ARM’ position.
Been at it all weekend but as soon as I hook and lift the cable just extends and doesn't lift the box. Is there a cable lock I'm forgetting.

do you have any curves applied ?
I haven't played with any curves no. I had to invert the axis for the toe brakes on my rudders, but that's about all I changed in my "axis command" menu.
I noticed for me...each time the hook release would not work is because i did not flip the cover first....i noticed in yours you did not as well.
Since this stream, I've practiced quite a bit and read some more details in the manual; I realised a few important things. As you mention, if we forget to lift the safety cover on the hook release, it won't work. Also, I would sometimes test the button to see if it worked after flipping the cover; that apparently opens the hook which explains why I couldn't pick up the load on the first attempt in the video. The manual says that by turning the CARGO HOOK ARM Switch to the "Off" position, you close the hook so that it is ready to pick up the next object. Therefore, everytime you drop an object with the HOOK REL button, you should cycle the CARGO HOOK ARM Switch to the "Off" position, and then back to ARM before you release the next cargo object. It seems to work now. I'm about to make another stream to show this and other things I learned. Thanks for the comment @Ink_YT757
Perfect, this video solved it for me!

Ake! Ake! Kia Kaha! (Google it :) ). Nice to see the 75 Squadron RNZAF skin getting some use. Nice smooth flying there and an interesting video. Don't forget spoiler control outboard portside of the flap control, they really make you stick to the runway on landing, and slow you so less braking is needed. Subbed to the channel.
I'll be interested to see if the cockpit textures get a bump when FC 2024 comes out.
Indeed, it will be interesting to see if the FC 2024 improvements (if any) will then apply to the full fidelity versions of the F-5E, F-86 and MiG-15.
@@Coolhand101e Looks like the textures didn't get ported over. So sad.
great work. f-4 looks awesome
This came up in my recommended. Many thanks!!
I make many of my videos to show what I do for fun, but some, like this one, can help people trying to figure some of the things that I struggled with when I started. This one in particular I made because I wish someone had done one like it before I tried to figure out how to operate the trim controls.
Trim seems very similar to the Huey.
Yes, once you configure it properly like I illustrated in the video, it works pretty much in the same manner. It is similar to the DCS Apache trim as well.
A little confused. I thought you had to rely on that grease pencil mark to aim. Where did that HUD come from?
I saw it in a UA-cam tutorial video and thought the same thing... I went in the editor, and saw that it is an option in the editor for the helicopter that you can add. Basically, it looks like the drop down aiming sight of the Huey. It looks like it is attached to the top of the cockpit rail. If you put it in, it stays there for the duration of the mission. If you are only shooting using the unguided guns and rockets, it is an interesting option (I think you can also put the night vision overlay on top and it makes it look like a real full featured HUD as seen in this video at 13:08: ua-cam.com/video/FjnQ-fX-Uag/v-deo.html). In many of the "real-life" Kiowa videos I've seen from Afghanistan online, they don't seem to have it installed and I think many used that grease pencil mark instead during operations. That HUD sort of blocks part of the view out of the cockpit.
For the M4, just click on the hot spot on the back of the stock and then press Alt C to get out of cursor mode. I think you also have to open the side door.
Thanks! I'm learning these things as I go. I think it's like that too in the Huey when you want to take the door gunner position. It makes sense because you can't move the cursor and the gun at the same time.
dove vedi che il fuel sotto le ali è finito?
I had to use google to translate to English (I speak French, English and Spanish - and this looked very Italian to me). ANSWER: To determine when the fuel is empty in the underwing or centerline fuel tanks in the F-5E, there is a CAUTION light that turns yellow when the pump no longer pumps fuel (below the RWR, right of acceleration limits gauge). You usually see the internal tank fuel starting to go down as well. Then, you turn off the EXT FUEL and PYLONS switches, get the auto-balance switch to LEFT LOW. At that point, you can jettison the empty tanks if you need to save weight. To learn like I did, watch Tricker's video (he talks about fuel management at 3:00 minutes in the video): ua-cam.com/video/GKgDm1PqChE/v-deo.htmlsi=caolkerzKHIHxY85
@@Coolhand101e ..grazie
Sounds like Jester is saying "stinger" but it is actually "singer"?
For as close as you have to get with those Walleyes, you may as well use dumb bombs.
True, but for the F-4E, the dumb bombs you have to drop many and a hit is uncertain. Walleyes, if they acquire the contrast they need, they won't miss. I'm sure with a bit of training I might get a lock from a bit further. I was also going for fairly small targets. I think these expensive Walleyes were used for high value targets like bridges and factories, which due to their size might be easier to lock.
Radio-controlled bombs are basically WWII technology.

LOL. After looking at the video again, I'd say I was maybe a little fast a my AOA may have been low. When I made this video, I had probably 10-15 landings under my belt, so it'll get better (although I'm always quite happy when nothing breaks on landing). These air force boys are sometimes princesses... if you don't land smoothly like an airliner they complain! 😉
Thanks for the stream. Although, your voice was a little quiet compared to the plane once you were flying.
You are right! I may have physically positioned my mic a bit lower than my mouth for that broadcast... I've also noticed that the engine noises are pretty strong in the Phantom. While taxiing with the canopy open, I can barely hear Jester. Thanks for the comment. I'll have to fix that.
I wish the X52 MODE select (which would triple functions for each button) worked or was as easy to program as "Set to mode, program. Set to other mode program..." but it's not. So I never use it and get 1/3rd the buttons. I will get a new stick , throttle and pedals soon anyway.
My previous joystick was the X52, so I understand what you mean. In order to be able to use modes 1, 2 and 3, you have to make a profile with the different 3 options for each aircraft in the program provided by Saitek or Logitech (I've had both versions of the stick). It is more time consuming than making a profile directly in DCS, but then you have your triple functions for the aircraft you built a profile for. If you are just learning the Phantom, when you start is the right time to do that. This way, once you have learned and repeated the functions in their different modes, you'll have built your muscle memory of buttons the first time around (as opposed to if you wait 3 months to make a good profile). P.S. I often used mode 1 for NAV functions, 2 for air-to-air functions, and 3 for air-to-ground. The idea is the keep the same profile logic if possible for each new plane you make a profile for.
I wonder if the F-5 will get a cockpit texture update when it gets added to Flaming Cliffs 2024. Hope so. I might pick up the full-fid version in that case.
Thx for the stream. For the F-5, I believe you can raise the nosewheel strut for higher AoA at takeoff.
Absolutely, the little switch in the left sidewall of the cockpit! Depending on how loaded the F-5 is, setting the proper takeoff trim will also go a long way to make takeoffs easier (5 degrees = light, and 7 degrees heavier loads - there is an indicator top left of the cockpit above the artificial horizon - I take a quick glance at it with the track IR at 21:25 as I'm rolling but it's best to set it beforehand). As you probably noticed, it was not with the F-5 that I had difficulty taking off. 😆 (I hadn't flown the Mirage 2000 in a few months 🤦♂ - I'll need to review my takeoff procedures for that one)
It's nice to see that when you look at the power lines from underneath, they don't disappear into the clouds like on some other maps. That was a bug that appeared with the new clouds a few years back.
Thanks for the preview. Ya, I noticed the different lake elevations too. I remember ED saying that one thing that was inhibiting them from making a Vietnam map was the inability to place water bodies (ie. rice patties) at different elevations. Looks like that hurdle might have been overcome. But maybe it already exists in other maps. Perhaps South Atlantic.
I find that surprising when the oldest map, Caucasus has a huge dam with water at the top, and water at the bottom. Regarding Vietnam, I remember when the Marianas came out, with my older computer, it was difficult to render all those palm trees... and it is just small islands. My guess would have been that a huge country with jungle everywhere would possibly make even today's machines come to a crawl in terms of frame rates. In any case, I'm happy to say my RTX 3080ti doesn't seem to have issues with the Kola map and that certainly means they are optimizing the platform.
UA-cam has been recommending me such good channels lately - hope to catch the next stream!
I'm happy you enjoyed this one. Thanks for the subscribe!! I'll be on vacation soon, and with the maps and planes/helicopters that will probably be released soon, I'll certainly stream some more.
