Join us on an unforgettable adventure to Hawagala, a majestic mountain near Belihuloya, nestled amidst iconic landmarks like Adara Kanda, NonPareil Estate, and Horton Plains. Offering mesmerizing views of Sabaragamuwa’s lush greenery, paddy fields, forests, and waterfalls, Hawagala is a dream destination for both locals and tourists alike.
🚶 The Adventure:
Our journey started at the river that feeds Belihuloya, where we enjoyed a refreshing dip before beginning the hike.
The trail takes you through a mix of wet and dry zones, starting with a picturesque river path and crossing a charming little bridge.
As we climbed higher, we passed through tea plantations, spotted a scenic hut, and reached a junction where we filled our water bottles-our last chance before the toughest part of the hike.
From here, the trail became more challenging. We battled leeches in the wet zone, trekked through a dry stretch, and navigated a dense pine forest that took nearly an hour to cross.
After the pine forest, another wet zone awaited, but the path was easier-just watch out for leeches!
Finally, we reached the summit after about 10 minutes of walking past the last wet zone.
🌅 The Reward:
The summit offered one of the most breathtaking sunsets we’ve ever seen-a moment of pure magic that made the challenging hike worth every step.
We camped overnight at the peak, surrounded by nature’s serenity, and were greeted the next morning with a spectacular sunrise that left us speechless.
💡 Tips for Hikers:
Carry plenty of water but fill your bottles at the junction-it’s the last refill point.
Be prepared for leeches, especially in the wet zones.
Wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring a raincoat or waterproof gear in case of unexpected rain.

Hawagala is located close to Belihuloya, about 19 km from Balangoda. The trail offers a mix of terrains, including rivers, tea plantations, pine forests, and wetlands.
