How to Afford Flight Training
It's not easy to afford your pilots license - it's perhaps the biggest bottleneck in a student pilot's journey.
In this video I discuss several different paths you can take to afford your license (paying as you go along, going through a flight college, or going through the military). These are all paths I've researched myself, and I can provide some of my insight and thoughts on them.
I also discuss the steps I'm taking to afford my flight training. Unfortunately, there is no "magic secret" that allows you to remove the financial burden that comes along with a pilot license. But I hope I can at least nudge you towards the best possible solution that works for your personal scenario.

How to fuel a Boeing 737
Переглядів 1,4 тис.Рік тому
Have you ever wondered how aircraft are refueled? Today I'll be showing you exactly that, by giving you the POV of an aircraft fueler. The Boeing 737 is a reliable plane that survived the test of time, so it's a great plane to learn about. Large international airports typically use a hydrant fueling system, where fuel is pumped through pipes in the ground. An aircraft fueler connects to this pi...
Airside Driving at Toronto Pearson (Dashcam POV)
Переглядів 1,1 тис.Рік тому
In international airports, vehicles are constantly driving around to service many different aircraft a day. There's some organization behind this chaos, and here you can witness some of it from live footage of me driving around Toronto Pearson (YYZ). I'll explain some of the rules of airside driving, and show you real-life examples of what we have to do on a daily basis with some dashcam footag...

    I fuel American 737s at DFW and we only put 8300 lbs in the wings so it’s interesting that you fill them up completely

    What the flip is this?? Playing a ground operations simulator game while talking about how you're going to afford flight training for pilotage is not only confusing, it's downright irritating to your viewers !! No wonder you only have 71 subscribers... it's a miracle that you even have that many subscribers........... !

    I am currently dealing with the financing process with my flight training. I did 2 years of college, got my PPL there, and decided to drop out to pursue flight training full time and not worry about the degree. Now I am working on my Instrument Rating, and am almost complete with it. I have been researching loan providers and nothing works well with them. The "good" ones are not willing to lend to you unless your flight school is partnered with them, and the ones that will lend to anyone have stupid rates. One provider I looked at quoted me interest rates between 15% and 22%, and the monthly payments were just ridiculous. I applied to borrow $36,000 and one of the terms was 15 years with a monthly payment of $626.16. Ultimately this comes out to over $112,000 at the end of those 15 years, and is obviously not reasonable at all. My parents have been incredibly helpful assisting me with this process and trying to find other loans that might work for me. My dad called his mom and proposed the idea of a loan from her. Well through this we found out about a bank loan that is backed by what's called a CD. Essentially someone puts money into the CD, and the bank will give you a loan using the CD as collateral. Since it's such a low risk to the bank, they are extremely flexible with loan terms, monthly payments, and interest rates. The CD accrues interest like a savings account does, and the borrower pays 2% above that rate for the loan. I have not gotten the exact numbers yet, however the interest rate for this loan should be about 5-6%. Back to the payments and terms, there are multiple term lengths to choose from, but again since the bank has collateral they will work with you. Once you reach the end of the loan term you can either pay the remaining sum in a balloon payment or roll the remainder over into a new term and adjust the monthly payments if needed. I have not gotten my exact numbers back yet but I expect to be paying around $200 a month on a 17-month term, then roll over into higher payments once that term ends. Obviously you need to know someone, whether that be a family member, very close friend, etc. who has enough money to provide for this, however if you can make this option work, it is the best I have come across.

    Finally a student flying channel that is 1. Canadian and 2. Not some "career 2.0" boomer or a guy with infinitely deep pockets My PPL route started as pay as I go but I did end up taking a loan through my school that allowed me to take more lessons per month while spending the same per month. When it comes to my CPL it'll probably take 8 or so months and from there I plan to go the CFI route and work at the flight school I'm attending while working a second job and capitalize on an employee discount to help finish off my other ratings. It's looking like a 3-4 year plan total to get my PPL all the way to multi-IFR.

    Go to A&P school, a bunch of flight school's offer flight time and/or ground schooling as a perk for mechanics. 2 years and you'll also snag an associates on the way. Sadly most of your credits won't count towards a non-aviation related degree. Bonus points if you find a flight school to take you on as an apprentice, skipping the schooling in exchange for hands on xp and a faster start.

    You can work in Australia mines and do your flight training on the side as a Canadian and if you're younger than 30 it's even easier to get a visa there. Getting your visa would count towards your naturalization if you could stay there long enough, you can get a degree or something after your work placements are finished, OSAP also provides good money to college's outside of Canada that are approved, once considered Australian, you qualify to work agreements that between Australian pilots to work in the United States allowing for more competitive salaries if airlines are your goal. If you want to stay in Canada, Confed has 2 year program (if weather isn't horrible, summer fires and winter storms) that'll only cost roughly 30k total.

      Thanks, that's great info. I've been recommended by more than one KLM flight engineer to move out of Canada as well, to the UK. I'm eligible for dual citizenship so I'm tempted... Moving might be a good idea for a lot of us, honestly.

      @a_WannabePilot UK is another option, only problems I can immediately say is that with brexit I dont know if its possible to work outside the UK, another thing is European countries tend to have more difficult written components to their licenses.

    • @drtrollguy
      @drtrollguy 5 місяців тому

      It is cheaper to get licensed overall in Canada. (If you're willing to leave GTA or live in a smaller city), my previous instructor chose to come to canada to do their training as an EU Citizen 🇮🇸 as they believed itd be cheaper and quicker to move up careerwise than to do it in Europe. I've been told it is easier to find work within Canada for low hour work. The difficult thing starting off is there aren't many vfr jobs, so you'd need your cat 1 me ifr and for 705 operations you're legally required to have 250 hours before you can fly those planes.

    Gotta say, really impressive video quality for a guy with 50 subs, props to that. I'm actually in the same boat as you, I didn't do the requirements in high school to apply to a college, and the 4 year it's going to take to finish the program just doesn't seem worth it, as you said. I'm in Montreal and I've been trying to find the best options for me. I'm not sure if I should enroll to a private school for 2 years and over 70k to get the AEC, or get into the cheaper learn-from-home courses and hammer those out as fast as I can to keep the long term cost down. I do have the privilege to get financial support from my family, but obviously I want to keep the cost as low as possible. Short-term goal for me is to get my PPL and become an instructor to build more hours. You seem like you've done a good bit of research, any ideas that could help me out? Thanks a lot.

    • @a_WannabePilot
      @a_WannabePilot 5 місяців тому

      Thank ya. Far from great, but still took me an embarrassingly long time to make. I don't think I have any programs like that near me, so I haven't been able to properly research them. But there's a few things I'd do in your shoes. Research what makes the program worth the extra money? Accreditation? Does it allow you to get a frozen ATPL (a cert needed later for airlines), or other certifications/experiences you wouldn't normally get? Research what past alumni have to say about the program. Did they think it was worth it? Did they land jobs after? You can also make a pro/con list. A pro could be that it provides structure, and you might find it difficult to keep yourself motivated if you decided to go the other route. There's good reasons for either path, but it's hard to tell without knowing the exact program. I'd really recommend just seeing other people's experiences (like on AvCanada or plain ol' Reddit)

    • @gamingtime1794
      @gamingtime1794 5 місяців тому

      @@a_WannabePilot Yeah the program to get the ATPL is 70k and 2 years long, is it possible to get an ATPL later if I decide to just get a PPL first to become an instructor? I tried reddit and so far I only found old or inaccurate info (like flight training only costing 30-40k) I tried to make an account to post something in hopes of getting some help from people in my area, but it got taken down instantly because I don't have enough reddit points or whatever on the account. I'll try out AvCanada for a better idea, thanks

    On year 2013. When I was a kid I used to play toys at the porch, then I suddenly heard some noises from the air, it was the Boeing 707. Now I assume that some of you will say fake because that was the year the aircraft Boeing 707 retired. It had red and black lines. I assume its Air Manila. It was so huge that I stared at it for minutes. It did a flyover near our house. It was flying low, not sure why. I've only seen 2 planes a big one and a small one. That's gotta be worth for me.. Incredible

    I had a go around incident, i was coming home from a sports meet and we were coming in very low (i live in a small northern town in canada so i know the normal approach) and yeah basically my parents were waiting in the airport for us and we got to a point where it was obvious we were so low so they sped up to gain some altitude (our airport has a cliff before the start of the runway so its not a straight approach) and the we were wayy past the airport terminal building and then we started climbing, im not quite sure the exact reason for why we were so low but i have video proof of this go around hahah. It doesnt help as i watch mayday all the time and yeah i was aware of overrunning the runway incidents and my airport had cliffs on either end of the runway so chances of survival in case of a overrun were quite slim. We had already been delayed at that point so it was a concern for how much fuel we had but we landed safely in the end:)

      Not me :) But the plane is doing a 'go around', which is a rejected landing. They can happen for a few reasons like: debris on runway, instructions from ATC to avoid collisions, unstable approaches, and whenever the pilots don't feel safe to land. They'll circle the airport and try to land again. They're rare, and the kid is a aviation geek so he got a little excited
