I started training Gracie Jiujitsu because of the street fighting aspect of the art! I grew up in the Eastend of London So I needed something that could deal with all aspects of fighting.. (with no rules) but the thing that has kept me in good stead has been the Head butts & elbows from the clinch.. and situational awareness! I’m so grateful for the art whether sport or street! But I’m definitely all For the street Gracie Jiujitsu side of the art!
Thanks for commenting and I definitely think all martial artists should be well rounded and I'm glad to know you are enjoying your training and keeping it real.
I’m a two stripe white belt and I feel like I’ve kinda just stopped progressing completely. There’s not a lot of white belts where I am that train regularly, and I get killed by the colour belts. I don’t care as much for the progression of ranks because I honestly can’t see myself getting further than I am with it. I do enjoy the physical aspects of rolling and learning but being beaten up frequently is starting to take its toll and I don’t know how to approach this.
You can do a few things. One, each time you get submitted, ask the person to break down and teach you what they just did and why it worked. Second, you could ask a higher belt for a coach roll which means every time they see you make a mistake they'll tell you to stop, provide coaching, and then get back to the rolling. You could even tell the person that you're looking for, advice and assistance and how to get better and that you would like their help if they are willing to give it to you. They'll probably change the entire way they roll with you
I really appreciate you asking a question!
The other thing people forget is to just have fun. It's not all about getting better and there is no point where you will feel satisfied
Very true, it should be fun and enjoyable.
great instructor mark
Thank you! I appreciate that.
When do you think someone should move to the adult class
When they are physically, mentally and emotionally mature enough, and in my experience, it starts to happen around 13 at the earliest but most commonly 14-15. They will also benefit from training with teens their own size, maturity and skill level. It really does rely on each individual though. Thank you for asking.
Nah in shape and in jiu jitsu shape are very different nobody is in jiu jitsu shape lol😂
Very true but you need to show up first to get better at either. Being in good grappling shape is an entirely different level. There is no perfect time to start, a person either shows up and starts or doesn't. Thanks for commenting!
Thank you so much. I am not a helicopter parent but this is still good advice and confirmation I’m doing the right thing for my boys.
Thank you very much and I'm glad you are a wonderful parent and get to enjoy Jiu Jitsu with your boys!

Thank you!!
Good 👍🏼 advice…from an old purple belt…
Outstanding explanation Mark! I didn't know that you had a UA-cam channel until today. Well I'm subscribed know and look forward to more videos.
Thank you. I appreciate that!!
ryan hall's dad
I have been a blue belt for 3 years now and the only thing that keeps me going is what you said in the beginning about feeling I’m not getting any better. Everyone with a black belt says what you said and in my mind I’m conscious about it and just have to get over that mental hurdle. That’s why I keep training. I will never make money from jiu jitsu but I want to keep training until I earn my black belt because it’s a personal achievement.
Thank you for commenting and I am sure you'll have some great stories when you look back and reflect after you get your Black Belt. I wish you the best!!
Nah bro. It’s your instructors, learning process . Bjj is a skill so apply any skill building process to it and you should see results. 3 years no results. Something is off.
how many stripes though? how many times per week? could you ask a purple belt for tips / what they suggest you work on?
@@BenWeeks-ca 1 stripe blue. I will say that I have moved a couple times in those 3 years and been gone away from home multiple times due to military duty. These past 10 months have been my most consistent in many years in terms of training 2-4 times a week.
That wrist lock in Hapkido is called a gooseneck and you’re right it’s extremely powerful all right Coach I’m watching your videos
It is called kote mawashi and it is a common wristlock in many arts. 100%
Awesome, thank you.
Why did you choose a woman to demonstrate your thing ? I see other men there, no reason unless you’re a pervert who gets no attention
Thank you I enjoyed watching this video and I get a full understanding. I was curious because at the boxing gym I go to a certified Gracie jujitsu instructor teaches a class and I was interested in learning Jujitsu to learn some ground game so I can have my striking and grappling.
I am glad you appreciate the video and explanation. Hopefully, you'll find the training you are looking for!
Thank you!
You are very welcome!
Totally agree, Gracie jui jitsu makes more sense ❤
no it doesnt. sport bjj fighters will survive far more in the streets than a GJJ fighter
@@RoZaxTheGreatlol wrong gjj is self defense and sport sport is just the rolling nonsense defens e
@@macaluso48 you're as delusional as people who think tai chi or wing chun would work in a street fight. GJJ brown belts wouldn't be able to hang with a regular BJJ blue belt. GJJ people barely train, get ranked on attendance and don't even spar till blue belt. And the sparring is terrible. The strike emulation isn't real either. At most, the bullyproof system is good for kids. Take it from me, I've trained in both.
Gracie Barra Is still in gracie lineage or diverged from It? I know about rivality between carlos gracie and the other members of gracie family, but did carlos got another style?
They were all Gracie Jiu Jitsu and had family rivalries but would stick up for each other, fight with each other just as so many families do. Now the Gracie name is all from the same original lineage but many of the siblings and children have a dscerning difference in their name Gracie Barrs, Gracie Humaita, Renzo Gracie, Carlos Gracie Jr., Roger etc. Same roots but now different branches and approaches to what they focus on. It is a BIG family.
Gracie Barra has an organized self defense curriculum too.
Sport BJJ looks flashy and cool but it's sport. It's not self defense. No concern for strikes. They think they're also learning self defense because it's BJJ but it's not. I'm GJJ all the way because I'm a self defense guy, first. I started as a (sports guy unknowingly) because BJJ is all the same right? I'm about practicality, efficiency and natural body movements. They are creating all this new exotic guards and submissions to win (like a nuclear arms race) because the way we do jiu jitsu now is MISSING something???
Nobody is going to follow any rules in a street fight. Suprise.
Thanks for watching and commenting on a totally different topic! I'll be sure to make a post on that too. :)
Dude post more throws I need more variety in my BJJ
I'll be glad to. Thank you for the request and I'll have something up soon!
Dang imma have to use that, that’s dope
Thank you! Let me know how it goes.
Morning class has all the benefits. :)
Loving the excellent production quality of your recent videos - nice crisp audio and well lit shots! Keep up the great content!
Thank you. I really appreciate it and we will be sure to keep making more. If there is ever anything you'd like me to talk about or address, let me know. Best wishes to you and thanks for watching.
I have found at my school a perfect middle ground seems to be 12-15 students. Although I do like when we have maybe 6 at open mat.
It is amazing how different it is everywhere but most people really enjoy a certain size class and it changes over time. Personally, I like to variety. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Warm ups?!? What did I get this purple belt for?
I see you rolling in at the end of warm ups :)
Except wiggles...wiggles are evil.
Ha ha haaaaa you know they are your favorite!
This is a VERY unpopular opinion these days. Most of the popular Jiu-jitsu people on youtube are now totally against warmups. I've had this argument at least 10 times in the last 6 months.
Maybe it is unpopular for some but we do them and in my opinion they are very beneficial. Movement before technique. When movements become easier, technique become easier to execute.
@@markcukrojiujitsu2322 100% agreed
@@dragonballjiujitsu I appreciate you commenting!
Remember your warmups people!!!!
That's right!!
This looks great I hope I can get the hold on the wrist right so he taps wish I was there with you guys so you can show me
Let me know if it works for you. Shrugging the shoulder and pinching the hand has made a big difference for me.
What’s up Mark I tried your wrist lock technique but I would have to be in your class and take your class and figure out how it works because I just can’t put any kind of pain on the wrist. I watched your video so many times but I can’t do it. that would be the best counter to the baseball bat choke, and we have some guy at where I train he has a killer killer baseball choke. So maybe if you can explain it I don’t know why I can’t get the wrist lock.
@@MMAGUY13 I am really glad you tried it and I agree, it is always best to do in person but hopefully you can figure it out. It is a wristlock similar to Kote Mawashi if that helps.
Don’t be a helicopter parent!
Our Jiu Jitsu (under Master Pedro Sauer) is completely different than what I’ve ever experienced. Solid and foundational in every aspect.
To me, he has one of the most brilliant Jiu Jitsu minds on this planet!
Guys, don’t be THAT parent
LOL. Great to see you here and thanks for commenting.
Good move, aka the “gi-zekial”
Thank you. A Gi- Zekial is really what it is. I appreciate you watching the video!
This is excellent advice, thank you. I have definitely felt the frustration you mention when it comes to feeling like I’m not making any progress. I will stay consistent and keep training though - thank you for this video 👊
You are very welcome and it does happen to everyone at some point. Thanks for commenting on this and keep making progress.
Some of the best classes I've had were the ones I thought about not going to.
I can totally relate to that too!
Great recent videos! Keep them coming! 👊
Thanks, we will have more coming soon
@@markcukrojiujitsu2322 Looking forward to it!
Great advice Mark. Fantastic representation for PSBJJA!
Thank you, I appreciate it.
This is great advice!
Thank you!
Great video!
Thank you, I appreciate your taking the time to comment!
Nice video! Hope it reaches some parents. I think your framing of good coaching/parenting is a good mixture between nurturing and realistic expectations after which kids can strive. Internalising this helps kids/athletes their whole life and not just in sports! I once heard a nice idea in this context: Do you want your kid to win in this particular match by any means, or do you want them to increase their chances to succeed in the total set of matches to come and all other challenges in life.
Thank you and I appreciate you commenting and adding a nice perspective! My hope is that is does reach some parents too. We'll be posting more talks in the future.
Good stuff. Also thank you for the leglock seminar at Joe's place.
Thank you and you are very welcome. I am glad you were able to be there!
Why is it called the Batman
The kids in class said when the lapels were opened it looked like bat wings like batman and then started calling it the batman choke.
Hey would u recommend this for a white belt
This is a safe throw as long as you get under the arm, they cannot land on you. You can start to learn this from the knees and then work to standing. We have had white belts use this in tournaments but they put in some serious reps. I hope that helps.
Love this!
Thank you!
That’s what it’s all about! Love it!
Thank you. I appreciate that.
U told me to comment and I did
Thank you for commenting!!
On the headlock should you replace the hand blocking the hips with your foot before framing to break the headlock? If you don’t, after opening him up, he could curl back up, and your back at step one.
