Motorcycle touring and camping Lake Superior across the USA SE1-EPS20
Fifth day riding around beautiful Lake Superior while admiring the USA, camping, touring on my 2018 Suzuki 650 V-Strom Adventure Motorcycle.
Sault Sainte Marie Border Crossing
The Sault Sainte Marie Border Crossing connects the cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. It is located at the St. Marys River and the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge. The U.S. Port of Entry was established in 1843 as the cities on each shore of the river grew. Regular ferry service began in 1865, and border inspection services in both the US and Canada were provided at the ferry terminals since the early 1900s. Ferry service ended in 1962 when the International Bridge spanning the river was completed.[1] The adjacent Sault Ste. Marie International Railroad Bridge was built in 1887.

Not just another "Ride the Highlands" video. This is the story of how bad an adventure ride can go when you least expect it. You can learn from my experience, this is what could happen. While out adventure riding on my Suzuki V-Strom 650 we came across a rocky passage. It was a cool October day and we stayed in a hotel instead of camping. Before I knew it, I was in the hospital. Found your video of the accident very revealing how quickly life can turn, keep up the faith and never give up ! Praying for you to be restored fully , Body, Soul and Spirit! I actually watched this a couple of days ago , And you have been in my thoughts, Thanks for everything you have done thru your channel.
Thanks, Ken. I can always count on you for a good supporting comment. I really appreciate it. I'm doing pretty well now driving the car and getting out walking changes everything. Dr. said 8 more weeks with no load on my left side yesterday, as there is so much healing going on there. More good videos to come! Lots of footage to bring to life. Thanks again!!
This was great! Thanks for sharing. Looking to do the loop this summer.
Your welcome! Thanks for commenting, the new "Gravel Crusher" route is coming up shortly.
I watched your Pick Axe loop video and thought I'd check out your other videos and saw this one, I wish you a speedy recovery. I am from Kingston as well.
Thank you very much! I'm doing pretty good now. There is still a lot of rub pain and antibiotics, but I'm getting there. I'll have videos coming out on the Gravel Crusher and the Timber Trail over the next couple of weeks. Probably be familiar if you've riden them too. Thank you for commenting and the well wishes
Ahhh, I checked out your videos to an older V-Strom owner and iRacing Sim driver!!! I built out a full rig myself and never raced. I just did thousands of laps in Miata like your videos.
24:00 Doesn't he know about the Transalp?? 🤔
23:15 I clearly say not a Transalp, but your right, I missed explaining why in the video but I did add it to the description. "As a smaller rider, why do I get a severely bland looking, water down, Transalp?" Thanks for commenting!
@@arthritic.adventures Sorry. I must have skipped over that.
No worries, mate! All good, nice to see someone being friendly! So often, people hide behind social media and never admit even the smallest over sight! Have a great day!!!
Thank you for the great video! Enjoyed seeing the Soo bridge. The Canadian side of Lake Huron and up the Bruce Peninsula offer the same views of the waters😅😅🙄. Rather minimal, as you know.
Thank-you Leo, yes the Bruce in Canada is very similar. thanks for pointing that out, the kind words and commenting!
Nice video for late January to watch, itching to get back on the bike as soon as this winter breaks, always enjoy your videos , keep up the good work !
I've Always wanted to Tour the Great lakes. Thanks for reminding me, beautiful Countryside !!
Oh your more than welcome MMADV606, watched a few of you videos and subscribed! Thanks for saying so!
@arthritic.adventures Been a bit of a bucket list for me to tour the Great lakes.. few more years to retire, hopefully them I'll have the time to do it.. And thanks for watching.. 😊
Hope you are o.k. mate.I subscribed after watching your vstrom650 vid; which was one of the best at showing bike's upgrades. Recover soon.
Thanks very much, I'm doing okay now, been a long haul. That's one of the nicest comments on my upgrade video. Thanks again for the comments and subscribing.
Thanks for great video. I've got the '17strom650xt. I also put the 16t front sprocket on,which opened up the gear changing.
Your welcome thanks for watching, gearing transforms the motorcycle if you ask me! Thanks for the comment
@arthritic.adventures On that subject. What do you think about putting, say,a 45t rear sprocket on with the 16t front. I'm thinking that for cruising on the highway it would be good, but maybe abit more acceleration on takeoff. Cheers,Den.
Hello, sorry to see what happened, but I’m glad that you’re on a good path to recovery. A lot of twists and turns with your medical stay! I have a couple photos/ videos and information on the path you fell on. I can send them to your email if you like!
Hey pandsterandster sure send them along, might be something I can use in a video! Thank you for the well wishes I'm getting better now, been a long haul. Still a couple of hospital appointments to go, believe it or not! Thanks for commenting

Thanks for sharing; happy you’re getting out of this night mare. Maybe, i should consider seriously to buy an air bag vest for next season. Better be safe than sorry… I hope you to get back on your bike for more adventures on gravel roads.
Thanks very much, Trekky. Yeah maybe a good idea that vest. Lol BTW love the Aftica Twin! Thanks for the comment!
Shit happens! I took a fall last year and separated my left shoulder. I was able to ride but very miserable!
Ouch, sorry to hear that. Must have been awful!!
Thank you for telling your story. It's a risk what we do when we ride our bikes, the best thing to do, it try to limit those risks. I am glad to see you are on the mend. If you ever make it out to BC, give me a shout, I'll show you around on some great roads.
Your more than welcome, I figure if one person takes a second look at a trail and remembers my story and says "Mmmm too far from home, my tires are need to upgrade first, I'm on my own, above my skill level" anything like that and avoids the same fate it's worth the time to make the video. Thanks for the offer, I'll keep it in mind
Glad your on the mend! That's crazy! How did the V-Strom hold up?
V-strom has a minor new dent in one of the Givi Panniers, that's it! It's about the same as me coming out of it with a broken fingernail! Lmao thanks for commenting
Hi Colin, I was talking with Richard last night and he told me about your new video. I was wondering if you would be making it and letting people know what was happening. I'm glad you did, because these things can and do happen in the blink of an eye. Get better get stronger, I've asked about your condition from the day it happened. Now, I know more, thanks Best wishes Gord
Hey Gord, thanks for the kind comment and the well wishes and thoughts. I'm doing okay now, definitely on the mend. Reminds me think of an accident you had on a beautiful red GPz, or maybe that was the bike you bought after, loved that motorcycle. Good to hear from you. It's been a long time. We need to get out for a coffee the three of us. Thanks again for commenting and watching
Great lesson to be learned by all. Colin is a well seasoned rider that’s smart, athletic & calculated yet still there were a couple of times he almost died from a split second incident. As a friend I’m very happy to see him on the road to recovery. Great job putting this out, it was obviously not a small effort & we’ll all look forward to your recovery.
Lmao! Thanks for the comment Bob
At times very difficult to watch.. raw emotion that is unscripted makes this very real.. good to hear you're on the path to recovery.. and thank you for sharing these lessons and your experiences .. please take care.. look forward to more adventures in your future .. 😃
Thank you for the kind words, Silky. Funny thing about this video, just after I got out of the ICU in Kingston, high as kite, I tried to record the core of this video. My wife and I found it the other night on my phone when looking for photos. I had no idea I had done it, and it was sitting there for 2 months. It's pretty funny to watch that!
OMG! I’m so thankful you survived! That is a horrific way to end season 1! I’ve learned the hard way myself that the VStrom is only good for gravel roads at best unless perhaps you’re an exceptional rider. But your ordeal is something else! I pray that your healing continues smoothly and that you are as comfortable as you can be. 🙏
Thank-you Chris, I'm on the mend now! I had another 7 day stay at the all-inclusive (hospital -> all the food, drinks, painkillers, and antibiotics are included) since this video. But, I've been home now for two and a half weeks and getting better every day.
The only Replacement for the DL650 would be a new Freewind 650 or a new Africa Twin 650. If that will not happen, sorry Japs, the RE Himalayan 450 would be next fitting option. (Assume DR's, XL's, XR's, KLR's and so on stay forbidden thanks to f. EU regulations). Nobody really needs more then 70 HP on a Adv.
Get shut of those mirrors they make a ridiculous amount of noise. I’ve fitted Aprilia mirrors on my Vstrom and kept stock screen the noise levels have come down greatly. Heated grips , metal bash plate , front mud guard extension, crash bars , side bags , EBC brake pads. Full exhaust system. That’s the upgrades I’ve done to my 2020 Vstrom.
Thanks for the comment Daz, did you replace the plastic hand guards? I need to do that still

Hey Great Video! I also have a Vstrom 650 (2021) kitted out much like yours. Unfortunately my crash bars are at the point of needing to be replaced due to the challenging terrain in AZ and my lack of off-road experience or ability! Couple thoughts… wouldn’t you want to go down one tooth on the front sprocket to improve the throttle control off road? Right now 1st seems really tall, one twitch of the throttle goes too far? Also wouldn’t a wider top box interfere with your side cases? Did I miss where you described the bash plate? Was curious which one you had (was it race tech?) . Anyway great to see someone doing it on the VStrom…. That said, you’re jonesing for a small AT, what about the Toureg 660? That seems to be the popular choice of the moment. Good luck!
Top box looks like it will fit when I measure it, tall gear reduce wheel spin in first on gravel and give better gas mileage on the hyw. seems to work really well, Toureg 660 is awesome but I'm 60 years old and only own Japanese bikes and cars, never had a single break down, Domestic or Italian manufactures scare me. Taking a vehicle in for anything other than service I can't do would drive me nuts!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks so much for your great comments!!!
I see you're in Az..have you done Bloody Basin Rd from I-17 back to Carefree...perfect trip for a Wee...
Thanks for this very well thought out presentation. I am an Ontario senior looking to do exactly what you have done: acquire a V-Strom 650 and kit it out for adventure touring. Do you have a chat blog?
Lots of options for it out there Brian and the V-Strom has a reputation for being a mule, lasting for ever without failures, sorry not chat blog. thanks for the comment!
Thank you for the video. You commented on riding that road in the 80's... Back then it was 1/3 the width and all dirt and hills. My grandfather used to drive that road sideways in every corner! My mother grew up in Flinton. Love the area.
Hey, that's a really cool comment. Thanks for sharing that, when I'm out riding, I often wonder what roads in the area were like way back when, how life was for people. Thanks again!!
Where can we Buy the Front Peak and the other parts?
Hey! Not exactly sure what you mean by the front peak? But I have listed everything in the description attached to the video for detail. Thanks for commenting!
Nice thanks for sharing!!

Just to clarify, the yellow leather tank cover & backpack / tankbag are sold together as a "Bagster" ? I wouldn't mind one if just to add color to my rather drab appearance Grey / Black paint scheme lol
Manufacture is Bagster, I believe you can mix and match the actual tank bag size
@arthritic.adventures Awesome to hear. Thank YOU 👍
Awesome look at your nicely upgraded DL650. I have same bike a 2008 model. Less mods but still they suit my mostly street riding. I have larger windshield, Givi 22 side cases & engine guards, rear trunk, LED Bulb 💡 upgrade, RK Takasago Chain & Darkside - Car Tire - on the rear. (Fyi: 205/55 VR17 from 150/70 R17) The latter is due to my 20,000 annual miles & commuting - its a drag to replace a rear tire frequently or have it wear out far from home, imho. I bought mine as a lightly used, new condition trade in at a Harley dealer. 12,000 miles not fully broken in even, not a scratch for $3,600 otd. Insane Value ! - Ive owned about 12 bikes over the years, 6 Dirt / Enduro & 6 street - mostly from 1975-82, High School years. Fast forward to 2023 and Ill be darned if the wizards at Suzuki haven't managed to combine all the Virtues of those 12 bikes into a Single Unit !!! The V-Strom is truly the ideal reliable "All - Arounder" - ironically it was our BMW+ Club President who suggested this as a "Poor Man's BMW that is 85% as good & even more reliable, for relative Peanuts". Afrer 18 months of flogging this Ole Girl, I couldn't agree more ! You earned a sub my friend in the GWN. David in Texas

Why do you skin the beets? We just washed them off from the garden chop them and throw them into the smoothies. I'm seeing a lot of people skinning them first they'll boil them and then the skin comes right off and I'm wondering why that is?
I just peel them and pre-freeze them and into a freezer bag, they don't last long we have frequent smoothies. Thanks for asking!

Thanks very much! No I didn't have an issue, but I'm wonering now, when I order a steel braided brake line kit for it, if should add an inch just incase for the few extra dollars???
This is such a cool video of Lake Superior, Arthritic Adventures. ay I ask if you ever use the video monitor on your motorcycle for seeing obstructions? I was considering making a similar setup on my motorcycle.
Hey VeeDriving, thank-you so much for the nice comment! I'm not sure I'm understanding you question? Are asking about the Samsung Active Tab that I have mounted? The V-Strom doesn't have a display so I think so. When I'm running "WAZE" on it, that tells about traffic obstruction, is that the idea? It's wi-fi tethered to my phone and it has a GPS chip so I can run just about any Android software, and know where I am with or without a mobile connection. Hope this helps! @@arthritic.adventures Once upon a time I met some guys from down east who had spent years cutting pulpwood in places like New Brunswick................. those guys simply took it for granted that anything they worked on would break a sweat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For 2024 the Africa twin is shorter
Is it? I just saw a review on the new BMW 1300GS. It actually lowers you when you stop? Nice, little scary of all the tech on the bike though, I can see big repair cost one day, thanks again for the comment!!!!
