They literally told us before they released that running away is always an option. It's alright to run sometimes. I don't, but my point still stands. Lol
just run past them lol. 18 minute rant when all you have to do is keep holding down the stick
We honestly needed more enemy variety after waiting 12 years since the last one lmao. I loved the game (having completed my first playthrough and with 49 hours in it) but like yeah oh my god so many enemies are missing from the first game and it's expansion. I was looking forward to new enemies being added into the game but aside from variants or new bosses I can't remember their being any new random enemies other than slimes?? I could be wrong there though and missing some. Either way though, if we had more enemy variety, and more of that enemy variety used over these encounters, it would definitely help remedy the goblin harpy plague a little lmao
I agree, I'm not very familiar with the previous game in the series myself and wanted to orient my ideas away from "just add more enemies" as it felt more like a just make more things argument but definitely having greater variety even within the same enemy type would do wonders for that tedium feeling in the early game.
A nice juicy dlc or maybe the modding community popping off would be amazing. I hope either happens
@@erikyesthatonei will say that the idea of spamming enemies at the player is VERY much a jrpg thing. I wonder if it's just a design philosophy. Happens in earthbound, dragon quest, cronotrigger, literally every jrpg ever. Pokemon too. It's pretty much a standard. Not saying that it's good though.
This is embarrassingly bad. You can just run past these and then take them out in a safer area. Most of the time, they don't even fllow you. I think you want to live in a game. I don't think you want to escape. You want to live in a prison that you did the interior design for. Game is game.
Game is still pretty boring even with NG+. Think it's time to let this game die and move on to another one.
True, you don't need to fight them. My only complaint is the low lvl wolves, which are hard to run away from. They are so fast that it basically forces you to deal with them. But yeah the goblins are 100% optional.
Yup. Good points randomly recommend person.
Thank you randomly arriving person
You can just walk past goblins and your pawns kill them most of the time. Its actually harpies that are the issue.
so I cut most of it out of this clip but the whole time I was talking in the first half of the video I'm trapped on a narrow aqueduct with three harpies taking pot shots at me.
Yeah but you can walk past everything. Issue is that everything after your first 1 hour of gameplay becomes samey and lifeless. NG+ solves nothing and enemies are very easy to kill. It was very interesting walking your way to the starting city, followed by NPCs made to escort you. Fighting off the big monsters. But damn, does it feel kind of boring for a lot of the game even as a fighter with an archer pawn. The highlights was the Post Game which actually had some interesting fights and the Sphinx.
idk about you but i enjoy the endless sea of goblins to kill
I don’t think you under how this game is designed to be played. It’s not supposed to be like the Witcher or another rpg. You’re supposed to be fighting the whole time
Having played and enjoyed a lot of beat ‘em ups, they make the most of that with enemy variety and much smaller pools of hit points. Games like Dragon’s Crown, Devil May Cry 5 and Sword of Vagrant can have anywhere from 30 to 80 unique enemies.
I can definitely see this ending up being a game type issue where its just not my vibe, but I have enjoyed other games in the constant fighting genre. Ended up playing through Ninja Gaiden 2, several times so I could Max multiple weapons. If its really just a genre issue on me, them I'm hitting here it may be the way they assign quests early on feels like the open world style, more like a Witcher game so I'm just getting myself into the wrong mindset there.
I prefer to travel at night. I found fighting enemies brings more variety especially with the zombies & skeletons.
Skeletons were definitely a lot more interesting when I got to them. Something about having to chase down a skull slowly bouncing away from me.
Someone needs to do a goblin troll reel because I swear when I was out at night a little bastard stole my lamp, laughed *AND* pointed at me and darted away so fast my archer pawn couldn’t even react 😂 so many fun details in the game
A few points I think you are missing out: First, much like Its predecessor, the game is an ARPG and combat takes precedent over other forms of engagement, reason why it's so common. Furthermore, enemy density is the way it is to try to produce emergent combat scenarios, as well as to accommodate the player with the game's mechanics. This generally serves to incentivize new forms of interaction with each given encounter - such processes are far more evident when fighting larger monsters, but, unfortunately, this is foiled by the game lackluster difficulty and enemy diversity. Which make the combat repetitive and boring since it does not encourage the use of the game mechanics, e.g., elemental weakness, the game physics system, party composition and so on. As for map traversal, I think your propositions are too stiff and ignore the game's own - far more organic - options. You don't need a NPC talking about which road to take, when you can just scout ahead using elevated vantages points that are present almost everywhere. On top of that, given the most monsters are not actively hiding, you can just plan your own way through it, and like others have said - your pawns included - you can just avoid battle. However, these options are severely limited during the night for obvious reasons. Which segue way into the more dangerous scenarios you alluded to with the whole monsters taking over bit. The night cycle already serves this purpose, but - again - in a far more organic, if not milder, manner. And I generally prefer it over the entire settlement take over system, as it screams of an Ubisoft's trademarked “Open World” game. That not say the game is without flaws. As I said, the low difficulty and enemy diversity are a big issue. The goblins could have been given more agency given their huge population, and the introduction of more diverse and engaging modes of traversal like the griffin riding would be great.
Its definitely more me trying to feel out ideas to add more texture or active choice within the frequency of the low level encounters, and I do agree there is some stiffness with a lot of these ideas. I don't know if there is any prefect solution but just form a first time user perspective it feels like one is supposed to engage with every minor fight between quests, and any system to teach how when why to avoid a fight will feel stiff, since its defining some edges, as long as it doesnt carry that feel through the entire game.
dragons dogma 2 more like Goblin Slayer lol
First
so close
The enemy density is fine early game since the combat is great and enemies are bulky enough to take hits. Around level 30 though I think it becomes obnoxious. Almost everything in the early-mid game areas gets one shot by that point which makes them feel like annoying interruptions to your travel. Enemy variety is a problem but adding more unique enemies will not solve this issue. The core issue imo is being constantly berated by 3 goblins, or 4 dogs, or 2 harpies etc. every 10 seconds, feeling like your swatting at mosquitos constantly for the entire duration of your travels. Its hard to apprectiate the scenery and exploration with your party when its this often. I think a great solution would be to condense the enemies into larger encounters when you start getting to the later early game - mid game, and continue it through the rest of the game. Instead of having 10 encounters from one town to the next, condense it into 3 or so larger encounters with maybe 7-12+ enemies each and only a couple small ambushes. Make a unique collection of mobs with their different weapons, and maybe have a large monster along with them, or have different races of enemies having a large battle that you can choose to join. Keep a few smaller ambushes here and there, but massively reduce the rate of encounters while improving the quality of each encounter. I think for attacks on cities, it would be a really cool idea, as long as it was somewhat rare and massive attacks. The game has such a unique npc system with them all being able to die, go to a morgue, and be resurrected, but it only really ever gets used if you dont know about dragonsplague and wipe a city. I think massive city raids with hoards of goblins and multiple large enemies alongside would be so cool to fight against with all the city guards and npcs. Have different types of raids for each enemy race and have their goals be variable. This would help you really want to protect the npcs you care about and possibly interact with the death system at all. It would be so cool to run back from a trip to vernworth to see goblins running through the streets, buildings on fire, and multiple cyclops/ogres attacking the vocation guild or somthing.
Hell yeah, its definitely been more of a tedium issue then a difficulty one. I do think the entire texture would change in a really cool way if these all became those larger encounters.
If it was like this, I don't think it would work as you intended. Huge groups of enemies lumped together just makes for a stun lock fest and since most vocations are ill-equipped for such scenarios and don't have access to huge fuck off AoE attacks this would just be obnoxious.
There is a a lack of enemy combinations in the encounters as well. It also feels like this game needs a "Tank" enemy, like something in between a normal mob and a boss to complement encounters, they should be the ones staggering the player not the small enemies. Tank, dps and support/long range.
I disagree. There are too many trash mobs
@@biltre271 I do agree and thought about this issue, that this would basically make sorcerer op because they'd just drop an aoe spell and delete all the mobs, while other vocations would struggle. I think reducing the hit-stun that small mobs deal, but keeping it on medium-larger mobs could help this. Most vocations do actually have some pretty decent aoe and defensive options, but currently most players go without, as small mobs just get one shot anyways and no encounter is large and unmanageable enough to warrant a defensive skill. Also, the mobs could be spread out in the location, its not like id just want them to dump 15 goblin leaders and an ogre piled up around a campfire, which would help sorc not feel as mandatory for encounters designed like this. Forcing you to equip defensive or aoe skills to deal with these encounters could be annoying though, so I think they should allow us to equip 1 or 2 more skills per vocation to allow more freedom of choice, as being locked to 4 makes you feel like getting the most dps value out of the few slots, rather than running fun abilities.
These voice inflections are driving me nuts
I'm sorry, Tardigrades don't generally have vocal cords, its all very weird.
@@erikyesthatone 😂💀
Absolutely Right. Feel the same way... Botw/Tears gave u a option to fight.. enemies wasn't clogging the roads..
I keep thinking some of the gank slog would be more tolerable if like, the goblins and harpies were just like 10-15% slower, as it stands if you're just trying to rush somewhere it can be really difficult to ignore mobs 😅
Definitely been something I've only felt when I'm excited by a quest line and want to get to it, when just roaming around bothers me a lot less.
yeah, its a reaccuring thing with this game, it is an amazing game dont get me wrong, it just has some gameplay issues more specifically just how repetitive it can be sometimes if you were to complete the game, and even do ng+, after maybe the 2nd, or 3rd time, theres likely not even a goal in mind when you progress the worst part about the game was progressing, the story was fun maybe the first time, the second time around i lost interest thats just looking at it at the bigger scale too, nearly 90% of the quests dont even seem like quests, rather just chores though id like to just blame that on the fact that the game is still very recent, in dragons dogma dark arisen, the bitter black isle made the game with a whole different story line, in a sense so once dlc comes out for this one (if it does at all, hopefully), the content added there will be like the respite between main story quests though my personal biggest issue with the game is the port crystals... when you place them around the map, sure, amazing, you can teleport back to there however, beat the game once, and you have to make your way, aaallll the way back to where you had them (excluding ng+, it stays until you actually beat the game) and i suppose an unrelated thing which i really want back difficulty. once you get to (maybe?) around level 50, you notice the game is just... really easy, theres no difficulty found, 99% of the time, except the rare case where enemies actually coordinate its to the point where ive had to make my own challenges simply to have difficulty okay and one more thing too, also unrelated the final boss's build up isnt even good, if you look at dark arisen, there is plentiful things you do during the fight, before you get to the real fight with the dragon though as with this game, you just go straight into it, and the fight in itsself isnt even hard either, fighting a drake is unironically harder
Honestly coming at this being my first ever experience with Dragon's Dogma, so I wasn't at all familiar with the series normal handling, or what the late game to early game feel should be. Just the idea that you can unlock a fast travel later in the game is cool, but naturally I think Difficulty increasing in a game is fine, but you shouldn't decrease tedium overtime, if the early game is the most tedious part you have a problem.
@@erikyesthatone early game was bearable the first time, though needing to do monster culling (i hate you brant), it wasnt fun lol, you had you walk to one side of vermund, to another, then one more, just for good measure
i enjoy killing the goblins 100's of times, on my 70 hr game going on to newgame+ i have slaughtered over 900 goblins, not counting the other subspecies. just the default red ones.
Same! I don't mind running into enemies constantly, it's a blast carving a trail through all the roads.
Walk 2 steps, fight a horde of goblins. Walk 2 steps, fight a horde of goblins. Walk 2 steps, fight a horde of goblins. Walk 2 steps, fight a horde of goblins. This never changes even at endgame. Coming from a game that wants you to explore the entire map on foot, they sure as hell don't respect your time when at least half of that time is spent killing the same goblins over and over again. Often times it gets in the way of exploration itself. It also doesn't help that enemies can also chase you for a strangely long period of time so you can end up wasting more time trying to de-aggro compared to killing. In my 90 hour playthrough, I killed over 4000 enemies which feels very excessive for Dragons Dogma. I remember one of my gripes with the first game was that I spent too much time annoyed at saurian enemies because every encounter is the same "hit the tail until they fall off" encounter and to my surprise I also had to do that for this game too.
Any ideas you think they would help with the tedium of these encounters?
@@erikyesthatone Not much that hasn't been said before. More enemy variety. More random world events (there's just 2 unimaginative ones right now, rescue and escort). Quests you can encounter in the overworld. The game felt rushed and it shows. It's fun for fans of the game but it feels like more of the same but without an endgame like Bitterblack Isle.
I need a goblin rebel...
I can see the "villages under attack" idea becoming too much of a chore. Other games have had that feature and it ends up feeling like you're babysitting settlements and the loss of functionality from losing a one is too severe a penalty so people feel forced to do defend villages (particularly if it's required for side quests). Dragon's Dogma 2 actually already does a baby version of this, enemies sometimes spawn at the entrance of a town and the local guards automatically start fighting them. You can ignore it and it sorts itself out, or fight the monster to deal with the problem immediately and get the rewards. Not just goblins, large monsters too later in the game. Personally, I think the main problem is that the aggro range is too large for smaller mobs. You should be able to make use of the fact that it's an open world game to take a different route and go around enemy mobs you want to avoid, but the massive aggro range means it often doesn't work and mobile enemies like harpies and knackers can follow you for much longer than you think. I also think the issue is that enemy spawns are largely fixed (i.e. there is always a goblin party in the same location, large monster always spawns at this specific creek, etc). It would be interesting if enemy spawns were more variable among the main roads, it could even be a mechanic where you could get monster spawn forecasts at large towns and could plan your route to avoid or target specific encounters. Maybe even get it from the town oracle as currently their function is to give completely useless tips for the main quest, pretending as if anyone actually stumped isn't just gonna look up a guide. Imagine if they could divine monster spawns on the map and perhaps for a small fee change fate to decrease or increase monster spawns along certain routes.
> I can see the "villages under attack" idea becoming too much of a chore. Other games have had that feature and Fallout 4 - the Minutemen? Yeah that doesn't sound too great...
tweak it so you only get the prompt when you are nearby and make it rare
You cant just run around them? I do with no issue. If I want to fight I do, if I want to run I do. If I want to avoid I do. The vid poster and others have no discipline worth crap, nor can they chose for themselves. "fought to many goblins in between" he said. How about not fight them? I will say, it does seem the goblin spawn is pretty high, should be mixed more. But even if it was, "too many saurien in between" "too many bandits in between" Just dont play the game. Yall dont like it.
@@PaulieMcCoy Yeah i remember many times in Fallout 4 i would fortify a settlement with walls and obstacles, and the enemy spawn waves would just spawn in the middle of the settlement, made me realise how pointless most settlement stuff is.
I definitely agree any constantly imposed area minor quest shifts to being a chore. My thought will I was streaming was less of its my responsibility to free the village and more like if I do then the roads there wont have random encounter (Are safe). Just as a way to be able to tell if a route will have a lot of the trash mob encounters or not.
