If the line opened in 1883 and ran for 123 years, that would mean closure in 2006 - but as the narrator mentioned, the line closed in 1966, therefore the line ran for 83 years - I am surrounded by amateurs

What a worthwhile project. What a pity no part of the tramway could be reconstructed. Apart from cost, ‘elf n safety’ would no doubt render such an idea stillborn.

Do you have a website where all this information is kept? It is a shame that a section of track cannot be put back and a section of the tramway run as a preservation society this would be great as a tourist attraction.

So many memories came flooding back. I was born in Wisbech in '54, but the family lived in 3 Cinema Cottages with my Great uncle Fred living at No.2. My maternal grandmother was livingng at 12 Hallbridge Rd, before moving to New Bridge Cottage, My maternal grandmother was living with my great aunt just a couple of door down from the pub down School Road. My paternal granparents lived in Outwell at Hope House and next door (The house and the large fish pond in the front garden have long gone) lived my paternal great grandmother with my great aunt with her nephew. I had two other aunts, one lived at Welney Bridge & the other lived in Three Holes. So as you can see the area has lots of connections for me. I remember The Fruit Growers Special going through town and riding it with my nan and my mum taking me to Sunday morning service at St Clements Church and going through the tram yard. Sad to say only a few of my cousins still live from those days in the area. All the others went years ago, including a brother from that time & place. My mums 88 & my dads 90 and I'm 70. All so long ago. I've not been back for about 10 years, or so.

This film brings back many happy memories for me. I was born in Wisbech in 1946 and well remember as a little boy seeing Toby go past the top of the road where I lived. Always loved seeing the tram when it went past. I had a friend, Mervyn, and we both spent a lot of time on the farm nearby playing but I think it is now an estate. My father was the Borough Engineer and Surveyor during and after the war and he took me in the car to see the railway in action. Was quite an amazing little enterprise but now sadly lost in time.

What a wonderful group of people and an excellent project. I had no idea about the Thomas the Tank Engine connection. The kids must have enjoyed the rides on the track trolley, I certainly would have done! Good luck with the next phases of your project. I will look out of your efforts when I next drive to Wisbech.

was the wheel set based on the driving wheel set of the steam tram engines

1:14 The tramway was the basis of Toby’s tramline in the Railway Series book, not Toby The Tram Engine himself

Born in 1956 I lived in a small cottage on Basin Road, very close to the bridge which took the tram over the old canal; there was a depot on the other side of the canal, with a small brick building which had an open fireplace in the single room building. My dad knew the man who worked at that depot and often we would walk across the bridge to see him. I can't remember what his name was (it has been 60 years since the last time I crossed that bridge, as we moved to Walpole St Andrew in 1961) but my mum always called him 'Horace Hotplate' for some reason, and that is what I remember him as. I do recall on one occasion riding on the 'push me, pull me' cart with him and my dad, I would have been about 4 at the time - health and safety today would have crucified them both. That tramway was a big part of my very young life, the recollections of the people and the images they conjure has taken me back to part of my joyous childhood.

Thank you for watching this video. A couple of matters have been drawn to my attention. As you will see from the sign at 1min 14 secs the Tramway was the inspiration for Toby the Tram and not the Thomas the Tank Engine Books. Apologies for this. Later Mavis and Henrietta were included based on the Diesel Trams.
