In the twentieth episode of the Prometheus series, The Film Symbologist continues the analysis of Ridley Scott's 2012 science fiction film. In this installment, I discuss what is happening in the opening scene.
What is the being at the waterfall doing? Where does this scene occur? What does it mean for the story? All that, and more, is discussed in this episode.

    I enjoy all of these theories that you have presented throughout this series. This theory strikes me as flawed, however. If the LV-223 Engineers were the Cosmic Rebels that were intent on ferrying the Black Goo to Earth as a gift, then why does it seemingly destroy humans' free will once it is incorporated into their genome? As you mention, it does certainly cause muscular hypertrophy and increased physical performance as a whole, as well as improve endurance against incoming bullets, but he went berserk against former coworkers, with likely a couple friends amongst the group that Millburn(?) kills in that hanger scene. The unmitigated aggression against seemingly all complex life does not seem like an endearing "Gift". Prometheus' Fire as a present was meant to allow humanity to assert their preexisting will, to further their aims and ambitions using techne, which besides mechanical technology also implied any and all artistic endeavors which uplifted and inspired humanity. I do not see any correlation between the apparent influence of the Black Goo and what the figure of Prometheus, or even the Serpent in Eden, represent in their respective cultural mythologies. Instead of empowering humans further to pursue their aspirations, the Black Goo reverts us to an animalistic state with no apparent higher cognitive abilities besides those involved in hunting and killing. It is interesting too that whatever chased and eliminated the LV-223 Engineers ultimately caused the pile of their corpses there, and I would think that if it were a Xenomorph then why not build a hive and avoid killing them but rather using them to incubate Chestburster fetuses. Why they all ended up seemingly huddled together and dying in that state of terror without any meaningful attempt at fighting back is another question that I hope you offer an explanation for. Whatever attacked must have been extremely intimidating to cause that many Engineers to panic so.

      Excellent comment. I've discussed this tension between gift and punishment in a few episodes already and I will continue to delve into this aspect of the story in future videos as well, but it may ultimately come down to perspectivism.

    😆😂 The amount of word play and narrative is funny more than anything else. Crazy how you want the film to be the way you want it to be. Ridley never said any of this 😆But to start off by implying the opening scene is what you want it to represent. And everyone else is missing the meaning. Because only the people who didn't make the film, understand it's true meaning. Is just comical 😆 Every word you uttered had so much passion behind it. As if you really want the listener to believe they never watched and understood the movie themselves. I couldn't do more than a few minutes listening. Ridley really had no dialogue in that scene. And for you to add so much 😆 I see this a lot on YT these days. Rewrites of films by the audience..

      With this series, I am trying to delve into many of the various interpretations that have been offered up since the film's release. At the same time, I am definitely advocating for my preferred interpretation. Given the nature of the film, there's a lot of freedom in how each person can interpret the film in any way that makes sense to that individual.

      If you have a more convincing, or interesting, set of interpretations, then you too are open to present them. Ridley and Lindeloff are quoted as saying that much in the film was deliberately left open to interpretation, intentionally ambiguous, to stir conversation and dialogue.

    Maybe you can find this quote, (think it was like 00’s or 10’s Maxim type rag) but I remember reading an interview with D Lindelof at his prime, post Lost, right before this came out, and he said he was approached by the studio with the completed prequel script and was given a bunch of money and told to make it into a “tri-quel” as was popular at the time and he said he just went to a resort in Mexico, was way over his head, drank a bottle of tequila in his room, ripped out random screenplay pages, threw some away and randomly jammed the rest back into the script. Turned it in and the studio loved it, Scott hated it but already had a contract and he wanted just the one movie that answered ALL the questions, studio threw more money at him he said ok yes. That’s why we have this nonsense mishmash of a “movie” that needs to be *explained* by video games, comic books and UA-cam videos. 😅

      Ridley Scott and Damon Lindelof seem quite fond of one another. Have you seen their joint interviews they did together to promote the movie? It is my understanding that Scott wanted Lindelof back for the sequel to Prometheus, but couldn't make it work for a variety of reasons.

    I've always considered the reason for the violent reaction from the Engineer to be from the sacrilegious nature of a robot. Just by existing outside the natural order (to the Engineer), it's deemed anathema and to be destroyed along with its creator. And that compelled the creature to resume it's push to exterminate Earth.

    In Prometheus, goo creates life. ‘Goo’ is only 1 letter away from God. What was Ridley trying to tell us here? Perhaps that God as a concept is so ineffable and so beyond our understanding, that it can never truly be grasped, and thus slips through our fingers. Much like goo. What did David put in his hair? Also goo. Obviously, what this is saying is that Goo/God is on David’s mind. Clever foreshadowing for the fact that he will develop a God complex. He will see himself as God, and yet his focus is merely on the superficial, cosmetic aspects of God, hence the hair product. This movie is so deep.

      @ dude, I just listened to you talk about hermeticism for 20 minutes because of one scene with a hermetically sealed room. Despite every single spaceship, space suit and hypersleep chamber in all of sci fi bring hermetically sealed. You’re in no position to criticise Sam Harris. My goo analysis was comparatively less of a stretch.

    • @TheFilmSymbologist
      @TheFilmSymbologist 4 дні тому

      @@slang1517 I legitimately found your comment to be funny. While I certainly have some disagreements with Sam Harris, his cookbook analogy is also funny. I wasn’t being critical. I think you may be feeling a little defensive and are being overly sensitive. Also, goo is inanimate. The black stuff is animate and is more like an organism. While the ampule room being hermetically sealed is important to the plot, that’s not why I talk about Hermeticism. I’ll be talking about it again in a future video too. 👍

    • @slang1517
      @slang1517 4 дні тому

      @ who told you goo must be inanimate? That’s not part of any definition I’ve seen. Secondly, the black goo is not animate, nor an organism as far as Prometheus tells us. I know in covenant that spore thing flies into a guys ear (without any method of propulsion) but that came out of a little organic pod which was clearly alive. I saw this as the substitute face hugger it clearly was. I didn’t mean to sound defensive of Sam Harris, I mean some of your analysis puts his cook book reading to shame. PS. You literally Segwayed into hermeticism after saying the goo was in a hermetically sealed room. The emphasis you put on it implied that this was intentional symbolism by the directo/writer.

    And I thought it was a lousy movie; who knew it was esoterically bad on so many levels? I find your synopsis very informative, for many reasons, but a little too "wishful." Countless interviews and director commentaries regarding Scott's thoughts on fringe science and belief systems give insight into his state of mind and aspirations for the movies he has directed. If it wasn't for studio meddling, the deleted scenes and scripts that were not filmed offer a complete story that should have been filmed. That said, your overview, e.g., deep dive, should be a compendium of the story (that should have been shown). I suggest your video's are necessary to fully understand and appreciate Scott's vision for the movie and its sequels. I wish I had had your background regarding philosophy and the arts when I was in college. I have always found the Enginer's (Gene-ineers) background compelling and worrisome. We are led to believe their influence on humanity's existence and growth, not to mention those of other species, was by their hands, yet they could not stop their [own] destruction. Weyland exemplifies the hubris in believing they could rest nature in their hands. "You, me.." was a poem by Muhammad Ali during a commencement speech some decades ago. In its essence, it means 'we' are the same. This could be applied to all the races in the franchise, including the Xenos. All of the Engineers and humans have reached the pinnacle of technology without expanding their humility. Both are lacking harmony with their technology. They have tried unsuccessfully to tame or domesticate a 'lesser' species. A species that can not be reasoned or controlled. Regardless of its evolution due to symbiosis, a species [that] will revert to its baser instincts. A species at its core is the perfect organism, a monster.

    I have only one problem with the notion that the Engineers decided to cancel humanity because of the way Jesus was treated and his message ignored/derided. Surely the Engineers would have realised that one single individual in a pre-technological society would not have had much of an impact on the wider world. It is an old SF trope that if an alien race want to make a point, they send a huge flotilla of enormous spaceships to hover menacingly over big population centers. But one man in an isolated desert community? That was never going to work and it would have been obvious to them.

Zeus couldn't do everything, -this is why there is eleven other deities. And" the fire stolen from heaven sparked so much rage from Zeus because he knew mankind will be far better-off than the dumb animals, and we wouldn't admire him anymore. It’s highly interesting that you point out the association of the story’s narrative and Gnosticism. As, upon looking into it, I’ve noticed that the “goo” itself can sort of be viewed as analogous with Gnosticism. Though, I mean that in regards to my own notion of what that which we know as “Gnosticism” has actually been throughout history. Namely, I’ve noticed that, more so than a strictly defined philosophy appearing in one particular period of history, I assert it’s actually more of a “template” which, when “placed” atop a previously existing faith structure, sort of “reinterprets” (or some might say distorts) its previously existing arrangement. As examples, as far as above surmised, most all (or at least most) religions have had a Gnostic (or similarly functioning) permutation. Far from solely the Christians, the Greeks before them had a distinct “Gnostic” variation of their Hellenistic worldview. Namely, Platonism, or especially the “monotheistic” version of their pantheon which predated Christianity’s arrival. Pythagorean thinking, even before that, show signs of being a “gnosticized” variation of Greek religion. Thus establishing this as a repeating process throughout religious history. More so, it’s obvious that, though Christianity had its own permutation of Gnosticism, Christianity ITSELF was initially a Gnostic permutation of Judaism. Developing along side its incestuous twin in Gnosticism, Essenism (from which it’s core philosophy was like based). Likewise, it can been seen even further back, that the old Egyptian religion also had a gnostic permutation, in the form of Atenism, the imposed faith of the Pharaoh Akhenaten. All that to say that, Gnosticism, in this context may seem to function as the “Goo” does, in regards to various otherwise distinct biological species, except across faiths and spiritual beliefs. “Goo”=“Gnosticism”. Merely biologically focused.. That is…roughly speaking anyway. Just my take.🤷🏻

      @@georgecisneros5281 That’s very interesting. I’ll have to think about that. It’s my understanding that the gnostic Christian’s leaned more heavily into the Platonic thought that is found in the New Testament while they tended to lean away from the Jewish Old Testament way of thinking.

      Indeed. I suspect that was the “pathway” or “connective tissue” cross mingling the two schools of thought, thus bridging them together through a common concept of Gnosis. Just as I suspect many of the other movements will have similar intrareligious connectivity with one another as well, to varying degrees, of course. As gnostics within all cultures find equal if not somewhat greater commonality with eachother than they do with even their own native cultures. That’s my “thesis” (of sorts), if you will.

    I like to call the “goo” “xenoplasm”. As that kind of hearkens to their connection with the “xenomorph”, but also seems fitting in regards to its common capabilities of influence over the genetic integrity of all sorts of species, across every variety. Showing that it is a truly “alien” substance to each of them, even despite its history of continual use by the Engineers.

      @TheFilmSymbologist that's generally been my opinion. I think the prolog (for Covenant) shows us David is definitely taught to lie by Weyland. I don't get a second of innocence from him, ever, as David. Maybe as his creator's son, it's his nature to be deceitful. Sise note: thanks for this series. If you were to cover Covenant, Romulus, or the others, I'm down to follow you wherever.

      It should be noted that it isn't just fire in this case but how to use it, the very beginnings of what we call technology. It all started that very first time someone thought to build the very first camp fire.

    No one seems to give a f*uck about the artist that conceived the alien and the structures you're calling pyramids...H.R.Giger was the creator of all that concerns the creature at all different stages, the spaceship,the eggs silo and the planet surface in Alien.He was awarded with an Oscar for his artistic vision that empowered the movie Alien.Scott let him work, wisely.No Ginger, no Alien. Same artist conceived the so-called pyramids, for the movie Dune that was never made. One of them was supposed to be the House of Harkonen.... please give Ginger the importance he deserves, as he created great things, who build iconic structures,often copied, but never matching his work. No Ginger, no Alien.❤

    This is (having read scripts and seen extra scenes, etc) an amazing film. Unfortunately some dickhead decided to cut important and key information from it to make it shorter. Basically, they destroyed all reason from it. If it had been 20-30 minutes longer as intended, it would have been much better received
