A Full Presentation of Glen White PA, which once was located near the Horseshoe Curve in Altoona, Pennsylvania. It is presented by Author Kevin Stiver of Altoona at the Blair County Genealogical Society on August 17th, 2023. #altoona
Awesome pics.
4:05 Ha! I used to live on Colclesser Avenue! But I grew up three streets over on Broad Avenue. I miss Eldorado.
There are at least TWO old cemeteries in Eldorado. The second one is at the top of the hill where Broad Avenue and Oak Avenue meet, behind what used to be a Methodist Church (up from where The Allegro is located).
I plan to film that one this fall, I visited over the summer
The ponds were put in by Blair County Conservation and DEP.
obvi9usly an historic site yet doesn't appear in a google earth search. only glen white cemetery is listed. can anyone provide some locators ?
The coke ovens are located directly across the street from the Cemetery, and they are most definitely a historic site. There are efforts in the future for recreation in the area and it will explain more of where we went on this trip.
I hiked up there for years and just recently found out about the grave. So much history.....
There is a cemetery that is much older than this in the woods behind the Altoona Mirror. It's in worse condition than this one. Also McDowell Cemetery by 17th Street has graves from the 1700's. A couple of George Washinton's soldiers are buried there.
Those are cemeteries I plan to film in the future
thanks
thank you
Thank you very much. Please be careful 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I ♥ Coke!!
Sounds like a good idea for the camping places. Going back in winter would be great too so we can see more. What a contrast with the place now to the picture you posted of the houses and creek. Very depressing looking. Looking forward to the next one...
That was a great day. Hope you are not working to hard and still have time to get out and explore. God bless. I'll give you a shout when we head up your way. Thanks for the adventure. 👍🙂🙏
Interesting
Cliff said to watch. I subed
So awesome.....
Well done! I heard about you from DaveHikeDave and The wandering Woodsman. I have subscribed .
It is always so sad to see cemeteries in this bad shape. A tip for reading head stones.-use a flashlight and shine it sideways across the lettering and it is easier to read. I watch a channel from Georgia who finds old cemeteries and that is what they do. Keep up the good work.
Great video. You have done a great job in your writings and presentations preserving the history of Glen White where my Dad and family was born and raised. Our family thanks you so much for your accomplishments.
That was so interesting. I never knew that was there and Ive been in that area many times over the years. Great video.
Cool. Was a great explore. Thanks for inviting me. 👍😁
Kudos to you for your efforts, and thank you for making certain these people are remembered and honored. I would very much like to visit this decrepit cemetery. Would you reveal how to locate and access it?
Directions can be found by searching "Black Cemetery" on Google Maps
Also, one of my Dad’s brothers kept telling me that his grandmother Emma had Native Ancestry. Could the Native American buried in this graveyard be the clue?
Quite possible, although it might have been there for the Kittanning Trail/before this cemetery, nothing is impossible. If I were you I would check the FindAGrave data base under "Eldorado Cemetery" and see if you notice any relatives' names.
So sad about the condition of this cemetery. I might have relatives in that cemetery. I Googled. My grandmother’s mother was a Bollinger. An Arlene Bollinger was an early historian of the Black family.
My paternal grandmother had Black surnames in her family that she was related to. I guess I need to check out this cemetery and see if any of her ancestors or relatives were buried here. I know she went to a Black family reunion every year. I am 73 , so this was a long time ago, but worth check in out. Thanks for sharing.
Good stuff! Found your channel through day hike Dave, looking forward to seeing more. Subscribed!
Kittanning path is still visible behind Ashville VFW Park off of MarkHanna Road
Great work preserving this history. Altoona is my hometown but we moved away many years ago. I still enjoy researching the history in that area.
This cemetery is in the woods by my home. Through the decades we have been here (1954 to present) there have been a lot of "parties" there - young people drinking, moving the headstones into a circle around fires, even satanic symbols graffiti on the headstones etc.. When my boys were young in the early 1980's, they came across two men carrying burlap sacks. It turns out they were actually digging up the graves. We contacted the police and worked with them to do sketches and they asked us to call 911 if we saw them again. Within a week, we saw the men and the police came and arrested them. I seems they were brothers and were salavaging from the graves. We haven't seen much activity there lately since there has been quite a bit of development in the past 15 years., before that, the area was mostly wooded so the kids took advantage of the isolation. I have a copy of the newpaper article from the police investigation at the time dated May 3 1988.
Love this video. If you could do Hutchinson Cemetary, that be awesome!
very cool thanks for sharing
I remember my dad telling me about this...But he's been gone since 1995. Another old cemetery I heard about is up on the hill by the old EUB church, up the road from the Allegro Restaurant. Thanks for sharing this.
got ya, and again tank you
Ah, to own your own train set and travel the country. 😅
Typical NS; never enough motive power to adequately handle the load.
