Joseph Bergstrom
United States
Приєднався 26 січ 2013
My name is Joseph Bergstrom, and I am a full-time bluegrass musician. I make UA-cam videos of me performing all kinds of music that I love. Folk, bluegrass, soft rock, classical, country; I do a little bit of everything . . . except what I don’t. I’m really a bluegrasser at heart.

The Last Thing On My Mind | Tom Paxton Cover
One of my all time favorite sad songs. I used to end every show with this.

We're on extended tour down in the Southwest United States, and it would figure that as soon as we recorded this video I would learn how to play this song better . . . next time, I guess.

We must have sounded okay, since the wild burros started coming up to say hello.

After years of playing this with @sonshinemountainband, I finally decided to figure out my own version. Luckily I had years of practice playing it, and got every track on the first take. Makes me wonder if I should practice all my songs.

One of the sadder songs that Shawn Lane has penned, I think, but definitely one of my favorites. Took an incredible amount of processing to get a usable audio track from recording alongside the Sprague River Highway, but I s'pose that's what I get for being dumb like that.

Off of Dougie's 1988 album "Real Estate," this song didn't quite click with me for quite a while until I listened to the words and started playing it myself-it's kind of turned into my own personal anthem for the Sprague River area. Sung and played into a single MXL V87 microphone, it's pretty darned raw.
Talk About Suffering - Appalachian A Capella Spiritual Song

We saw the sunset, had a carload of recording equipment in the back, and figured, "Why not make a video?" So we did. This old Appalachian tune probably has instrumentation, but we did it a capella. Merry Christmas. Hey I’m a Mando player abt to start fiddle how hard is it?
Your milage will vary. I'm by no means a good fiddler (just barely decent enough to not completely embarrass myself), and it's taken me four years to get to where I am now. Generally (not universally), it is held that the fiddle is the hardest instrument in a bluegrass setting, and I'd have to agree, though it might tie with the dobro. If you can play the mandolin, then you're several steps ahead, as the tuning is the same, and most scale lengths are very similar. Get a decent fiddle without blowing your budget and practice drawing clean, accurate notes before you worry about anything else. Speed and dexterity come with time, same as anything else. If you know anyone who plays fiddle, (or any variation of violin-playing), pester them until they show you some basic things, to help speed up your journey. I met a concert violinist for the Oregon Symphony, and she had no shortage of tips and things to help me out-so, find the best source of musical wisdom you can and mine it. Merry Christmas!
Got the looks and voice down not sure anyone will ever pick like him but you sure are doing AWESOME
@@huntergivens2442 Tell you the truth, jokes aside, I really don’t want to be Tony-I just want to be myself. 😊 Merry Christmas!

Awesome Joseph! Keep up the good work. God Bless you Scott & Norma
This song was my "Theam song". when I was in high school. then nearly 50 years later, I met Jesus and Life has never been the same. Thanks for the reminder of where He brought me from.
Thanks my friend. I've been planning for ever so long to visit your UA-cam channel and I made it here today and this is the first song I've listened to. It really touched my heart in a a place that I had forgotten that it still hurt. The Lord used you to bring healing to my soul. You see, Vera and I lost three children and maybe a fourth in the same way you did. Thanks so very much!
Doesn't sound that much like it...
Just the way I was taught it. 😊 Lots of good ways to play these old tunes.
Great job man! Best wishes from Barcelona!
Thanks!
Sweet sounds of the Appalachian Mountains
Why, thank you! I’m actually from Oregon, but it is very Appalachian!
Wonderful! I love this!
Why, thank you!

Very nice.
Why, thank you!
Nice version
Thanks. Could probably do better now, but that’s okay. 😉😅
Fantastic Joseph, what a brilliant musician you are, pleasure to watch thankyou for sharing, I have only started learning the violin it's my dream to be able to play this tune one day
Thank you! I don’t know how brilliant I am, but it is very nice to hear. I’m not that good of a fiddler, but I’ve thought about doing tutorials for some tunes and such. Blessings, and I hope you keep watching!
@@JosephBergstromMusic I think your fiddling's great, so unique... that little flick over you do at 2.13 is brilliant, love the sound it produces, is there a name for that little technique. Now if your from gaelic roots, I'm trying to track down a gaelic tune written by a Patrick Macdonald in the 1700s apparently. Jenny O'conner from Circa Paleo plays it, would love to hear your take on it with your various instruments if I can find out more about the tune I'll keep you posted. Cheers
@@chrisgleeson2443 Hey, thanks! So, I'm sure there's a name for that technique, but I don't know it. What I'm doing is rocking the bow between the D and A strings, like a double stop, but instead of playing both notes at once I flick the bow back and forth, to hit the notes separately. Hard to explain, I guess, or I'm not being too clear, but it's a pretty technique. If you can find the name of it, maybe I'll try to learn it. Most tunes get either simplified or slightly modified when I play them, because I'm not the greatest fiddler. There's one tune I do with my band "Farewell Liza Jane" that is basically just the technique you were asking about. It might be worth looking into.
Beautiful y’all have a new listener! ❤
Very nice.

I love it your amazing
Thank you, but only God's amazing--I'm just doing the best I can. :D
Loved that Joseph The way you held the fiddle low down is that a regional thing, or a personal choice. Either way keep playing.
It’s mostly a personal choice. I started playing like that so that I could bow and sing at the same time, but it’s actually the more-or-less traditional Appalachian style, before “proper” violinists told them it was wrong. I’m from Oregon, but I’ve picked up a bunch of Appalachian eccentricities over the years. Thanks for the comment!
I love it
Thanks!
Is this a live performance? If so it makes this a lot funnier 😂😂😂😂
It was not, sadly. This is taken from a UA-cam video I did. Happens in my live shows sometimes, though.
Just swing it.
Exactly what I did!
Great song, great playin' Keep on playin dude :)
Amazing color on that guitar 🎸
Keep going bro! Practice, practice, practice!!! Sounds decent man! Put a little of your personality in your playing when you feel it. Peace!
Oh, I’ve come a long ways since then! But I’m still learning. There’s not much occasion to break out an electric in my usual genre, after all. 😉
Nice song thanks for send me a videos and I m making scarfs
Sounds good thanks
Thanks for listening!
