“What Does It Mean to Be An American?” is a free educational curriculum offering six lessons for educators, high school and college students. The curriculum consists of six independent learning modules that examine a key theme from Secretary Norman Mineta’s life and career:
Immigration
Civil Liberties & Equity
Civic Engagement
Justice & Reconciliation
Leadership
U.S.-Japan Relations
Each module provides different perspectives for students to answer the curriculum’s central question: What does it mean to be an American?
Developed by the Mineta Legacy Project in partnership with SPICE (Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education).

What Does It Mean to Be Asian American?
In this video, young Asian Americans share reflections on their identities and the challenges they face. The discussion was filmed in 2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic and a rise in anti-Asian hate crimes and hate incidents in the United States.
