Attention, baseball flippers, investors and prospectors. In our opinion the most important question we can all ask ourselves BEFORE making a buying decision is ……… Is there a better place to be investing my money right now? Look, this is why we have a "junk slab era" - collectors are slabbing anything and it's only a matter of time before the bottom falls out on most cards - especially stuff from the junk wax era and ultra-modern.. I mean some of these pop reports are ridiculous - and keep in mind when you have a card slabbed (excluding vintage) you may as well be dropping it's value just by having it slabbed because you're adding to the population - regardless of the grade. I've been in the hobby/business for almost 40 years and have been flipping cards for just as long so obviously as a dealer I have slabs, but I really try to stay away from modern and ultra-modern base slabs unless they're GOATS because the market is too saturated with base 10's so when I do buy modern and ultra-modern cards I try to stick to rare inserts, parallels, relics, auto's and serial numbered cards - preferably less than /399 because this hobby is going to have the same issue we had back in the mid-to-late 90's and early 2000's when the effects of the junk wax era hit the hobby hard. At the moment the card manufacturers are making the same mistake they made then (and they think they're fooling long-time collectors) - they're printing the same amount of cards they printed back in the junk wax era and merely issuing them in 100's of various sets.. Don't get me wrong - I really-really like some of the sets - especially Topps Heritage and Archives mostly because primarily I'm a vintage collector and I deal in mostly vintage so Heritage and Archives really hit's the spot and satisfies my desire for vintage and ultra-modern - but again - I don't really buy them to flip because in reality they may as well be novelties unless I pull something or find something in the wild that meets my criteria for buying.. Look, I'm just saying I have absolutely no idea why collectors are still breaking junk wax with the intention of slabbing these abundant cards because from an economic perspective - it's not going to workout in the long-term.. Sure, a PSA 10 could regularly sell presently for $80 - but it's only a matter of time until that particular card has a pop count of 20,000 with a 10 ratio of 40% - meaning 8K of the 20K of that particular card are graded a 10. Now ask yourself (and of course this depends on the card), are there 8,000 collectors out there in the wild that actually WANT a 10 of that card?? I mean if there is then it's not like there is any pressure on the collector to pick one up because a 10 isn't rare at all!... Of course this is why I generally stick to rare cards - more specifically rare cards of GOATS and notable players that are on track for a HOF career because the demand will always be there.. For example - if I have a Hank Aaron serial numbered /99 graded a PSA 10 - there are only 99 of those cards in existence and not all of them will grade a 10 so that makes that card "special", moreover rarer than it already is - and collectors like special rare cards, lol.. Collectors like the idea of having cards other collectors don't.. I guess what I'm trying to say is that - long gone are the days when a pristine 10 was something rare, something to brag about or to show off (depending on the card of course) because generally there is no shortage of 10's for the strong majority of cards produced after 1980. Of course there are exceptions - not only that - but the pop count can only tell you so much about a particular card, just because a card has a low pop count or a low 10 ratio - that doesn't mean it's a rare card by any means, nor does it imply that 10's are scarce - what it means is that the card probably isn't worth the grading fee - even if it came back a 10 because no one wants that card.. I mean a 1989 Topps #216 Jack Howell may have a pop of only 30 with a handful grading a 10 - but that does not mean that particular card is scarce, nor does it mean that cards scarce in high-grade - it means that no one wants an 89 Topps Jack Howell, lol... Since I'm writing a thesis now I figured I would point that out because that's precisely what collectors/dealers are doing now - they're just slabbing more crap with lower pops hoping for a 10 so they can take advantage of some of the more ignorant people in the hobby - that's the "new thing", lol.. Slabbing 1987 Topps Tom Seaver's or other less desirable cards of the GOATS, and even semi-stars and commons.. Let me point out that none of that applies to vintage - vintage has the opposite problem - there aren't enough high-grade vintage cards to meet the insane demand, moreover I cant think of any particular vintage card at the moment that's relatively over-saturated or has a pop counts even remotely close to ultra-modern cards... Of course the vintage GOATS have been graded a lot but there are many reasons for that, but even then there still isn't enough to meet demand. So yea, if your goal is to turn $3.50 into $80 bucks then I would put down the 1990 Topps and strongly suggest spending that $3.50 on a raw high-grade vintage card and having that bad boy slabbed - it doesn't mater if it's a GOAT, star, semi-star or a common because if it grades above average then it's an easy flip.. Look, if you know vintage cards you can make some significant money buying vintage to slab and flip or just flipping raw vintage, and you can take your time doing it unlike with modern cards because the vintage market has always been stable, which of course is why many collectors feel comfortable investing in it... The problem with ultra-modern is that your investment depends on a players performance, and if you buy a hot rookie right now, by the time it's submitted for grading and returned that player might not be hot anymore - even worse - he could be injured.. So yea, modern and ultra-modern is way too risky for me, and honestly I would liken it more to gambling than anything else, lol..

      I appreciate your opinions, but what does that have to do with the pack that the dude found a Topps football pack in a box of cards he bought, decided not to sell it on eBay for the going price of $3.50 opened it, and pulled about cards he can grade and sell fro about $80 from it?

    • @CMGCollectDirectTeam
      @CMGCollectDirectTeam Місяць тому

      You do understand that I didn’t buy a 90 Topps football cello to open and find cards to slap, right? It was a single pack in the bottom of a huge lot of cards that I bought. So the real question is what would you have done if you found a 90 Topps Fleer Cello back ??? I had two options, sell it on eBay for $3.50 or open it and see if there were any Hall of Famers or GOATS worth grading. In my opinion Aikman is a Goat. As for the other two players, Reggie and Bo having an alternative grader grade the cards and slab them made financial sense. So I basically agree with the essay you wrote, but not sure what it has to do with the information shared in the video, or maybe you didn’t watch it and just commented on the headline?

    LMAO!! This is such FALSE info. The grading company ABSOLUTELY matters in regard to the value of, and legitimacy, of a card. Stop lying to people, Dale. There’s a reason PSA, BGS, and SGC cards sell for money than 2nd rate companies. A 1987 Topps GEM 10 sold for $29.99. A PSA 10 sold for $400. People like you are exactly why sports cards dealers get bad reps.

    • @CMGCollectDirectTeam
      @CMGCollectDirectTeam Місяць тому

      You obviously missed the point. Of course if it makes sense financially you should grade your cards with the BIG 3. However what many don't understand is that THERE IS A TIME AND PLACE for alternative grading of CERTAIN CARDS, when you close your mind to this fact, you lose money! I am not trying to convince you, however a rigid mindset prevents many in the hobby and profiting at the level they could be.

      @@CMGCollectDirectTeam Most people that collect sports cards do so because they enjoy the hobby. Not because they’re looking to flip cards and hope to turn a profit. Some cards have quick turnarounds in profit (some rookie that explodes on the scene would obviously turn a quick profit) Some cards take a long time to profit from, and others will not profit or may decline in price. There’s a lot of bad information out there about this hobby. Card prices were never higher than they were in October/November of 2020. I remember seeing 1986 Jordan PSA 7s selling for 10K-12K. Bird/Magic PSA 8 rookies selling for 10K. Card values have steadily gone down. Much like everything else, the market value is driven by supply and demand.

      I am sorry you have obviously had a bad experience with the sports card market. If there is anything I have learned over the years is "People convinced against their will is of the same opinion still" The math is the math, it is right in front of you, example after example on our website at www.cmgsportscardinvestments.com . I have no hope that you will be able to get out your calculator and do the math for yourself. Sports cards investing is not for everybody, it is probably not a good fit for you, but I hope you find your niche.

    Just like I said before, you are acting like an Amway Recruiter, trying to talk people into thinking this is an easy system to make money, like "paint-by-number." There is a chance to make money, but it is a slim chance to be consistently successful. It requires a lot of time and is definitely going to cost you money before you even get a chance to make a profit. You have shown what you bought, but not what you actually sold and how much you actually make and how much time was invested. You are being deceitful by ommission and by saying that anyone can do this. The statements you have made are just like the ones that "pumped and dumped" cards in the 80's and 90's that led to the huge collapse of the industry previously.

    • @CMGCollectDirectTeam
      @CMGCollectDirectTeam Місяць тому

      If it is not beyond obvious that anyone who bought this lot could profit with it there is nothing I can say to that. People see what they want to see. "A person convinced against their will is of the same opinion still" Sorry you had a bad experience, but we all must take resposibility for the mistakes we make. I don't really care if someone decides to enter the card market or not, and some people SHOULDN'T, I think you are proof of that statement. Have a good week.
