Pierre Moerlen & Joe Blocker I think are some of the most underestimated drummers that have been
It’s not 11/16, it’s a bar of 3/4. There’s a steady quarter note pulse during the whole intro, until you get to the third time the riff is played. The last hit of the riff (the first two times it’s played) lands on the last 16th note of the bar of 3, followed immediately by the downbeat of 1 on the next bar. If you count the last hit of the riff as the downbeat of 1, the measure would be 11/16. The third time is totally different.
Thanks for your interesting comment! For whatever it's worth, I do believe my break-down of the time signatures is correct. Perhaps we are talking about different things? Rick Beatto actually made the same analysis I did. But if you can count it differently, and still make it work, that would also be correct. Rock on!
First class breakdown for a mediocre guitarist who just wanted to know what was going on.....thankyou.
Thank you, and welcome to the channel!
great cover!
AS a Genesis fan since 1971, when I first heard Trespass I bought each Genesis album on day of release . I was 22 when 'And then there were three' was released. It took some getting used to with yet another member leaving but the opening track certainly had quite an immediate impact on me. Thank you for your analysis of the structure of this very hard hitting opening track.
Hi, so you are a little older than me. I was 14-15 when I first heard Genesis. It was 1977 -78, and the album was Seconds Out. I was immediately hooked. After that, I discovered lots of prog bands, but few -- if any -- have meant so much to me as Genesis.
@johansteenslandmusic3699 yes indeed. Genesis was not well known back in '71. My friend and I saw a small review announcing the release of Trespass. Neither of us even knew that Genesis existed at that point, but the review was well written. We went to our local record shop. In those days in the UK, you could listen to records in record booths . . .the music was so unlike anything around at the time and so wonderful. The rest is history. 😊
Was so good had me expecting Phil to start singing lmao
And he was 20-21 yo
The first Genesis LP I bought way way back in 75 and .. the music of these incredible musicians has lived with me ever since . Thanks for this excellent breakdown ..
It is truly wonderful. I was 10 in 1973. I put a record on my brother had borrowed, with this weird fox on the cover and heard this. Hooked ever since. I will never forget that moment.
We're the same age then! Yes, this intro is truly magical.
I felt nothing wrong....sir: u may pass.
Awesome
Thanks!
Cool
Thanks!
No idea what this is about or why this was recommended to me but It was an interesting watch. Keep up the good work.
Welcome to the channel!
Not first not last , came here to watch this masterpiece 🔥
15 myself in '78. And Then There Were Three was a phenomenal album.
Cool, we're the same age, then!
beautiful!
Thanks Johan, what a lovely passage
Nice!
hi Johan, as a big genesis-fan i must say: great explanation and play of this timeless and wonderful epic intro, thanks and congratulation! greetings from beat
Thank you so much!
Thank you very much Johan !! 👍I fan of Genesis since 1970. Pure and emotional sound for me: old man living in Swizerland in Geneva. Thanks again for the old beginner that i am♥
You were a fan before me, then :-) I first heard them 1976 and was immediately hooked. Thanks for your comment!
Watch Stephen Prutsman play it on piano. Mind blowing.
I just did! Wow, the technique and poly-rhythmic ability! And his interpretation is really interesting. Thanks!
Joe blocker. Goddam legend and genius
Yes, he was something else!
Wayyyyy better than these horrible remixes in here! Good job!
Thank you so much! And I agree about those remixes -- yikes!
This time signature has always confused me too. It's a really weird feel.
👍
It's one of my fav prog albums! And the title track sure does not disappoint. Love the organ sound.
They sure are very special musicians. It's impressive they did these tracks justice live.
I did not know that about Phil's voice. Thanks for all your comments, Thomas!
Thomas
@@thomaslueg1778 Hello Thomas and thanks for your comment! I had a bit of trouble translating it (my German is non-existent), but eventually managed. I discovered Genesis a little later than you, in 1976, and it changed my musical perspective totally. I'm glad you found and like my channel. Welcome!
Jobson knew how to exploit the unique features and attributes of the Yamaha CS-80. This poly-synth was cutting edge in '78 when Jobson made the first IK album. This big machine weighed 220 lbs and had 160 lbs of circuitrty. It had both proessure and velocity sensitity. /A unique two-foot long pich bending ribbon controller . Coupled with the Hammond and mini-moog... Yamaha electric grand was simply the best electric piano of the era. Eddie didn't need a Mellotron. Didn't need an Arp 2600 or Arp Oddysey or Arp pro coloist. His rig made him a one-man-band. And what a great fiddler!
Agreed! I love his sense of soundscapes, how he creates his unique sounds that fit so well into what he's playing. I also love what he brought harmonically to UK, especially Danger Money.
Listen to "The cuckoo in the depths of the woods" from Le carnival des animaux by Saint-Saëns. Wilson must have known. If not, this is one of the most wildly random coincidences of somber pieces of music featuring birds associated with death.
Thanks for that suggestion! I did now of that one. Love the artwork, and the music is haunting.
Very nice! :) Lovely vocals and production.
Thank you so much, Peter! You haven't missed the original music video for I am me, have you? ua-cam.com/video/q6eEAu5aN8Y/v-deo.html
Fantastic ,Johan . I love this piece. its really a work of art. \
Thanks, Jan! Here's the full music video: ua-cam.com/video/q6eEAu5aN8Y/v-deo.html
Modern day is so different from what it was like over 50 years ago. Much like today, anybody can take advantage of a multitude of gadgets and devices developed over 50-60 years of invention. But 50-60 years ago people had to invent from scratch many of the things we take for granted that are instantly available today in your pocket on your phone. My point is, 50 years ago nobody showed me anything. I spent years in my bedroom listening to records over and over, slowly figuring out time signatures on my own. There were no instructional videos on anything like this. It was a different time. I do thank you for your love of Genesis, one suggestion would be the time signatures of "the battle of epping forest" from Selling England. years later Phil would point to this one as a little excessive. One note. When i saw The Lamb tour in '75, they got off a bit and flubbed the dramatic instrumental break in "Anyway", with it's bombastic accents. They quickly got back on track, but even Genesis could have a moment of confusion.
Hey, man! Many followrs have requesting "The battle ...". So that one is on my list. Thanks so much for your input!
At 2:00 it's Bb four times, not Bb Bb C C
Thanks for your comment! To be honest, I'm not sure exactly what you mean. I'm not claiming you are wrong, just that I don't get it. Anyway, I love that you participate in the discussion.
@@johansteenslandmusic3699 I don't know how else to explain it...
@@markrae1317 Thanks for getting back to me. I'll try again ...
and your third intro chord seems to be missing a note
Yeah it's the guy who called you out on the "Watcher of the Skies" counting.
"It never deviates from that". Here we go again. In the first place, you state that the song never changes from 5/4. Well it clearly goes to 4/4 in the "right between the eyes" section. But how do you come up with your counting of the keyboard intro? What makes you think it is in 5/4, and what makes you think the chords play on the "2"? What makes you think the keyboard, playing by itself with nothing else is being counted at all, much less in 5/4? To me he is softly and slowly playing with no real specific tempo, just playing. How in the world do you come up with 5/4 and playing on the "2" for the intro keyboard playing by itself?
Hey, Robert! You are right regarding the 5/4. I realised my mistake, and put a big note in the video correcting me (perhaps you missed that). But I am happy you spotted the mistake - -good catch! When it comes to the intro: Since there is no explicit pulse, it is hard to say exactly what's going on. However, if you extrapolate from the first verse and backwards, everything falls into place if you break it down the way I do in the video. That said, my way is ONE way to explain it, one way that I think makes sense, one way that let's Genesis fans think of the track, understand it and play it. My goal is to be helpful. I often come back to this mind-set in my videos.
@@johansteenslandmusic3699 i can kinda see how you could count back from verse and get that. Again, having a little fun, the main thing is we agree on one of the most important groups of men ever to assemble together to create such an amazing sound and vibe, as in Genesis
Do you think that Collins and Rutherford looked at each other and said "hey lets do something in 13/8 but only for 4 bars"? Ive seen interveiws with Rutherford where he say that they come up with "bit" and only later go wow thats a weird time signature
I have no clue. But I believe that with Genesis, it was all about the melodies and the overall feel. It makes sense to me that they only after the fact realized they were playing in 13/8.
Initialt som en kännedom om gamla Genesis. Sedan fortsätter du att överraska, och du för det så bra👍
Tack, Anette!
Mellotron worse Instrument I ever played( but it sounds great 🤣) You can play a note for max 8 seconds because it works with tapes ,after 8 seconds the tape stops and go into rewind modus 😂 So you really have to think about what you are playing and count the seconds 🤣 And it’s full mechanically
Yes, it was a very special piece of gear. Thanks for your input!
Everything I heard from you so far, Sir, has been fantastic!! Looking forward to what you will bring in the future. Best wishes and thank you for sharing!
Wonderful -- that makes me happy! I take it you've listened to all five singles from Crossfade plus the three videos in the Melancoly Melodies series. Crossfade will absolutely be released as an album, perhaps this fall. Sharing my work on your social channels is a great way to support me. Thanks!
I really enjoyed this song and album I fairly listen to it regularly I love the live version The Drop D adds its depth The band really shows it strength here It Toto...would not expect anything less
I agree! This track is fantastic on so many levels.
What a terrific song…the lady’s voice took me to paradise!!
I'm so happy you like the track, Walden! It's a bit unusual, me thinks. "The lady" is called Jennifer Anderson and is an Australian singer who was an absolute treat to work with. I also love her vocals. Welcome to the channel!
Magnicent!!!
Close. It's Mellotron strings and brass with a French accordion playing the bass.
I admire you for going for it and making your dreams land in reality. Hats off to you, and great video, wow super professionnal, and I'm a really critical musician myself. And great song...
Thanks, JFMatte, for that kind comment -- means a lot to me!
I love it!
