Переглядів 1628 місяців тому
Whether it is concealed within or a celebrated expression, the structural framework of our built environment can help create memorable experiences. A structural engineer’s role needs not be limited to resolving the forces of gravity, wind and seismic in our buildings, but can be expanded to explore opportunities to construct unique spaces and forms. As structural engineers, we strive to provide...

The contemporary designer wields an abundance of information, a technological arsenal, and an optimistic outlook on cultural progress. And yet, we are confronted by insurmountable crises: from climate change and mass migration to social justice issues. It is perplexing to envision how the default practices of today can effectively tackle the very crises they have contributed to. In this lecture...

The timing coincides with debates surrounding dominant models of practice, including architecture and urbanism. The moment has been called the Transition Imaginary. The mobilizers ...

Impressive video, The Illinois School of Architecture. Looking forward to your next upload! I smashed that thumbs up button on your content. Keep up the fantastic work. The way you highlighted the comparative analysis between Barcelona and Chicago's urban contexts was enlightening. How do you think these insights will influence future architectural designs in urban environments?

I thought the thumbnail was a weird render of Bella Sky
@54:20 That’s the best advice that is applicable to not just architects, but to any professional in general. Misspellings and typos are the most embarrassing mistake you can make. I’ve trained my brain to pick up typos in not just portfolios, but just about everything I write as a professional, even emails. Typos are indicative that you produce sloppy and careless work without proofreading it before sending it out or publishing it. It doesn’t take an aficionado in your profession to know that you misspelled something. That’s why it’s so embarrassing.
Anyone here from after seeing from ILLINOIS website?
When I was in the program, (89-90) in Versailles, my independent study was to review and investigate how the various accommodations affected my fellow students' experiences. It was the impact that their own randomly assigned environments had on their social, emotional, physical, and educational exposure I reviewed. The bottom line was that everyone had very different lives in the program and we only came together at school and on the handful of scripted "sketch trips" to particular areas. This, unlike the group living in a dorm in the Spanish version, it probably the most profound way the Versailles version differed from the Barcelona variant. One obvious difference is evident by looking at how the program (as in this video) is depicted and what is shown, as well as what is not shown. Below, I will link to my video of the program, 30 years ago so you can view the differences. One thing that should be apparent in this video is how little Architecture is shown. Nearly every photo has fellow classmates, if not several, in it. There is nothing wrong, rather I would note that the communal living, foreign study, and emphasis of "group" is conspicuous. The emphasis is on the students, as a mass, doing something. Individual growth, individual impressions, and unique impact this year in Europe has one each participant is not the focus. Again, not good or bad, just different. Every year is unique and I would hope that it continues. Still sad that it moved south. Oh well. I participated in the 1989-90 University of Illinois Architecture Study Abroad Program (Versailles) and have always liked seeing the few other on-line presentations of the program. Some aspects are the same, some have totally changed, and each year seems to have its own take on the experience. The most telling thing is the shift in what is shown in these shows. For comparison I submit my 30th anniversary video I put together recently. I wish others would post more about this life-changing program. Yes, I am a bit sad that it left Versailles. ua-cam.com/video/BVMkb8O40f0/v-deo.html
Yup. One of the best portfolio videos I've seen. Very helpful, doesn't shy away from criticism, and covers all the good stuff.
Please stop saying OK every 10sec, OK?
Brought back a lot of memories. Too bad the program moved out of Versailles; it was a wonderful place to study architecture.
I totally agree. I was in the 1989-90 Versailles program and it was amazing. I would argue a slightly better location to study Architecture. Yes, I read the PR messages from the schools when the program announced its move, and it just felt more like a move of convenience and not one out of improving student exposure.
umm umm umm umm umm ummmm
i love these video
how someone’s life end up being so boring
Impressive
Great Topic but It would be nicer if the woman say less “ehhhh”. Sounds annoying.
Thank you so much , the lecture is a great help.
Good afternoon Mr.!!!!!!!!
The fact that the screen is tilting a little bit is quite annoying :(

Great grphic dsign pprtfolios!!
nice...
okay
Shameful, this video basically gives us to understand that architects only sell images.
or you can show your real projects...
No, this video means that architects seek perfection in every step of their life.
"it is a graphic design project".. Im an architect not a graphic designer... I´m not selling how awesome my photoshop skills are. You guys focus way too much on it rather than a good architectural design.
It's a video about architectural portfolio - what do you expect. It's way too idealistic to believe that people can appreciate "good architectural design",without your ability to present it well using graphical design.
Daniela Sanabria The architectural design should've already been taught by the time everyone's applying for grad school
You should consider improving the quality of the speech. There is not a clear explanation and the people speaking obviously have no experience in talking in public.
is this all done in Behance or are they using Indesign? Or something else??
InDesign
I didn't know Urbana had this type of college but Im an ISU fan overall so Im out-
I definitely got left behind with this career path. It seems complex and impractical requiring money for school and to buy all the supplies and software to start. It doesn't reach the people after a point -
Lhin Doh that’s me right now I came into it expecting to learn and not have to spend on resources for building every week.
Great content in this video, OK? I'll be using a lot of this input when I put my portfolio together. OK.
at first I thought he was Michael Emerson !!!!!
i want to see that guy seth's portfolio. he kinda feels like me :P
thank you !
the guy talking throughout the middle of this presentation drops an "OK?" every 20 seconds I don't know if I can watch this all the way thru it's getting really annoying.
Can I ask something? What type of application the speaker used during the last part ?Thanks in advance!
Amazing lecture! Thanks
it does make us feel that we are just plain graphic designers than be planners and architects where the feasibility of the project is just ignored. Even when i was in architecture school i could see how fussy people were about the layout of page than the layout of the plan, which is sad. i have seen how some of quite talented architects have been just plained ignored because of that.
+jignesh das False dichotomy. If your school actually did care less about the architecture than the presentation and graphic design, then that's obviously bad. That doesn't mean though that *also* caring about these things, make you "just plain graphic designers". It's a visual (in part) profession and thing you're trying to communicate so obviously it matters. Graphic design is not just some separate profession. It has a purpose; to communicate ideas and stories in a most effective and appealing way. These are things you need in architecture as well, at least when you're doing everything from concept to presentation (outside of school it's just as necessary but you might not be the one responsible for these things if you're working in a larger firm).
thats what you have used through out your explanation "GRAPHIC DESIGNER" and FYI in modern world every section has been subdivided into such categories in oder to provide employment and bettering each work . MNC design companies have graphic designers separate from architect and other such categories. hope i am not offending your profession as GD.
+jignesh das in academy, people communicate via essay/ research papers, and thus your writing skill needs to be good enough so they can understand you. Similarly, architects should have a good visual presentation skill to EXPLAIN their projects fluently. Therefore, I think all architects are required to train their Graphic Design skills for better communication, let alone the actual practices of architecture itself.
exactly my thoughts.
@@doromook1 it's in Academia not academy
Thank you very much!
thank you very much.i extremely enjoyed every second in the video
Me too
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!
